Drug dogs sniff out 42 at Parklife music festival by: Jon Kaila From: Sunday Herald S

At a popular club in Sydney, notorious for its drug use, police decided to walk in 2 sniffer dogs, the dogs were going mental, the officers proceeded to walk out, and I overheard them muttering "too much paperwork".

Not picking on anyone, I'm sure they have good reasons why they think what they do.

I agree with most of what you said, and that a lot of cops are decent people just doing their job. It's undeniable though that there are also plenty of arrogant powertripping cunts in the force, and enough that just about everyone I know has a story or two. The main issue still lies in the laws rather than how they are enforced.

It wasn't long ago that someone correctly pointed out that everyone who hates on the police would still run to them if they were ever robbed or assaulted or some shit. Our society needs police.

Bull$h!t... if I were in trouble - as in - in a really bad situation, the cops would be the last place I'd ring to ask for help. The very last. After being assaulted by 2 of them in the past (as a female), I don't trust anyone in the force as far as I could throw them. Knowing police are out there does not make me feel one bit safer, at all, period.

+1 Cops are fucked.

This is why marijuana will never be legal; the government and police are making too much easy money for busting people with it.

Wouldnt taxing it bring in a lot more profits? :)

Marijuana will never be legal because the government wouldn't be able to control it... Everybody would be growing it. I also think they don't like do admit that it can help sick people. All this time, they've been telling school kids and such that pot is bad and it makes you go crazy bla bla bla, but if it became legal and promoted as medicine, they'd look like dickheads. Not like they already don't anyway.

I've talked to a couple police officers about what they think about doing small time busts, and the 'war on drugs' in general....they both said it was not enjoyable work and wasn't what they signed up to do. Obviously a couple police officers is a pretty crap sample but I reckon there'd be more than a few that would have a similar view. I'd find that kind of work mind numbingly boring and unfulfilling. I'm sure some cops love it though, and no doubt the profession attracts its fair share of power trippers. I just believe that the vast majority of cops are generally good peoples, and would help you out in a bind no matter if you were a drug user.

If you want to focus your strong feelings somewhere productive I'd recommend #1 educating the public and #2 writing letters as someone else mentioned, having people who aren't drug users that believe in the 'cause' can be heaps helpful I think. It's not going to happen overnight but slowly I think the idea of decriminalization/regulation/treatment for addiction will get stronger.

That sucks, but I don't think the same would go for most people. I'm not saying you don't have reason to feel wronged, and I can't personally relate to your situation. I can't say that you as an individual should trust them or feel safe, but I do think it's unreasonable to hate or insult them all as a group. Not all cops are the same.

And users wonder why we are all grouped together and steotyped as lowlife druggies. Whatever you guys say, I know for a fact that not all cops are bad people and they don't deserve a lot of the shit they get. It isn't an easy job.

Oh good, an intelligent well-thought response. Thank you :)

Most cops these days are pretty fair. They do like to put on the staunch face and throw around their authority from time to time but given the complete lack of respect most people have to any type of authority is it any wonder? A few of you sound like typical high school students who like to say "All teachers are fucked" when reality is they are only doing a (poorly paid) job.

Unless you are a public menace they will for the most part leave you alone. What idiot these days heads to a festival and doesn't accept there will be sniffer dogs? The fact that only 46 people were arrested in a drugged up crowd of thousands shows how much effort really is put in. If any one of you were in charge of detecting and arresting drug users at such an event, how many people would you identify? I'd bet you would be able to clock up a few hundred users just by walking along the line up into the show. And you aren't even trained. I'm sure if they really wanted to make a statement they would bring in a few more paddy wagons than they do. Like I have said before it is a war on drugs and you have to be smarter if you want to survive. Small personal amounts are easy to hide even a full strip search.

This cop is pretty cool..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmSNN7vZt_o&feature=related

Fucking useless. It's all high and mighty we're saving the world from the "evils" of illegal drugs until they actually have to do some real work.
On the subject of cop laziness, one of my favourite stories was when I saw that it was a six man job for the cops to go over to the shops and get two bags of fried chicken and chips.

EDIT: That being said just to paint an accurate picture instead of a cynical one, the run ins with cops I've had have generally been pleasant.

... Wouldn't be able to control it? If pot was made legal
A: I don't think the country would become a bunch of stoners
B: Alcohol is Legal, but you don't see everyone brewing. And the ones that do only keep it up for a little while (Most people who try)
C: Tobacco is Legal, growing it is not. But you still don't meet many people who grow tobacco.
D: And for those people who do grow mariujana (Which would mostly be for personal use cause selling it wouldn't be overly profitable) Send the electricity bill through the roof for Hydro.

I really see very little argument for your statement. I believe in our life time it will be legalised. I think it's a long road ahead, but People continue to fight the good fight, and sooner or later another first would country will legalise it. And when they have great success and taxable cashflow from it aswell as freeing up time for police to find heavier drugs, I see Australia will have no choice to follow suit, because to do otherwise would be taking a step backwards not forwards (And we all know how much Julia Gillard likes to move forward)

^ I agree with that post. Once it's legalized, there will be companies manufacturing it and black market marijuana will be a niche, like homegrown tobacco is for example. I hope we see it in our lifetime, and I hope we see even more progress then that but I suppose I shouldn't hold my breath.

You may not see much chop chop in grey old Melbourne but I can assure you as soon as you cross the tropic of Capricorn there isn't a pub that you can't walk into and find a farmer who will sell you a garbage bag of the stuff. The same goes for weed. It is very easy (and profitable) to cut a space in a vast field of sugar cane and hide a ton of something else. It is very hard to detect also, don't forget there are some farms the size of Vic up here.

The prices of weed won't fall as there is still a level of expertise in growing something that isn't stink weed. Most punters when growing a plant on their back porch in a pot would still be willing to pay a premium for a better skunk variety. You only have to look at california to realise this.

Yeah very true.

I think the introduction of more strains and the regular smoker being educated on the differences would be a major benefit of legalization. At the moment Australia is pretty poor in the way of variety, so much skunk/indica...I suppose it's popular because it yields are high and it's relatively 'strong'. I guess if it were legalized and different strains of cannabis became popular the illegal market would just mirror that and supply the same thing.

Sounds logical to me. I wonder how this has gone in other places it's legal? I know in California it's only legal for medical, so it's not quite the same thing and I guess the illegal trade would still be strong. I can get illegal tobacco for cheap but I don't bother, it's too much of a hassle and occasionally the quality hasn't been good when I've tried it in the past, way more convenient to pay the premium and get it from the corner store where I can be assured of quality.

I'm not convinced about the "everyone will grow it" argument. Alcohol is legal and yet despite the relative ease of brewing your own (far easier than the process required to produce resonable weed) hardly anyone does. I'd imagine if it was legal the vast majority of people would be happy to buy quality controlled and taxed products from government approved retailers much the way we do with alcohol and tobacco.

I hope all attending bluelighters are being sensible & safe at Parklife Brisbane today! :) Saw a group of youths being thoroughly searched by police on Charlotte st in the morning; three blocks from the event 8(

having lived in several large cities, london, sydney etc... and travelled extensively through europe, east block, asia etc.. ,i think aussie cops are the worst i have come across. most racist ones by far! dodgy, and just pig headed.
my hardcore raving days are over, plus most gigs are shit in sydney anyway... but the stance LE take on minor drug busts, i.e festivals i think is a massive waste of resources for the results it gets. they really need to look into it. take a page from NZ's Don Brash! haha (;

Wow unlucky nzp! Or maybe very lucky. I've spent 90% of my time in Australia so have dealt with police here most of the time, but friends have had some real horror stories from overseas, including asian countries.

I agree that australian police have a different way of doing things than british police. In london the police just seemed mostly soft to me, they were putting up with all kinds of abuse from the drunken masses...but the situation is different over there, -seemed- like many more idiots getting drunk off their faces and getting violent than here, it was close to chaos at times and wasn't really my kind of thing. Seemed to be almost zero respect for police on saturday night, whereas here it -seems- like there's a bit more respect.

Just a few experiences so can't really say much with such limited information, you obviously have a better idea than me having lived in london for periods of time.
