Being the kind of person I am (probably partially attributed to my psychedelic mentality) I find myself constantly coming across strange coincidences and pecularities.

Just to provide some examples... and I know some might find my observations to be ridiculous and pointless to even mentìon... but Ill just give you two quick ones off the top of my head, to show you what im talking about.

1.the fact that both the words Infinity and Eternity are eight letter words... and that the number eight is the mathematical and symbolic sign for infinity and eternity. Thus the word and the number mirror one another

2.the fact that life is often said to be in a constant state of movement - a.k.a. change. yet change in this sense is contradictory due to the fact that a 'constant' represents something fixed, while movement is described as precisely the opposite, thus paradoxical.

I just find these little discrepacancies to be very weird, sometimes even unnerving. Some might not think twice about these sort of things. You might have to read my examples over a couple times to see what Im getting at. My point basically is just how weird some co,tradictions and coincidences can appear to be

I was Wondering if anyone has any examples of strange little coincidences, contradictions or paradoxes similarly like this.

I have more examples, I was just curious what other people might come up with. Thought it would be interesting.

study some philosophical taoism

the infinity symbol is not the number 8. the infinity symbol just happens to look like the digit 8 rotated 90 degrees.

when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail?

The phrase "the only constant is change" is not a paradox.

life has plenty of meaning without silly stuff like this. although i am one for finding links and patterns quite a lot, most things actually and simply do just coincide. trying to add meaning where there is none is a waste of time, and it'll only drive you nuts (speaking from experience).

L2R I actually never made that observation, I said: Life is in a constant state of movement which is what is often known as change.
one of the only true inevitabilities in life is change which would make it constant, no?

And a paradox is most commonly known as two things that appear contradictory at first glance but are actually tied together under the skin.
So if changes are constantly expected to happen (though we might not know how, when, where, but just that they will at some point...) than the idea of it in theory, is a paradox. A constant that changes; fixed movement. Contradictory yet, sensical in this circumstance.

Alasdairm you make a good point... but i ask you is that not good enough for you?
I find it rare that we come across coincidences that are spot on.
Btw... the infinity symbol doesnt look like the number eight, they actually àre identical in terms of looks.

If theres a nail sticking out of a piece of wood... and another nail lying sideways next to a piece of wood... I still say they are both nails.

And If all I have is a hammer... than all I have is a god damn hammer dude. There aint shit I can do about it.
Thats like saying if all I have is eyes than all I can do is see.

And for the record, I find it in no way silly to make observations about paradoxes. Theyre actually suprisingly difficult to grasp, and yeah maybe the one I used as an example was rather simple and seemingly silly. Maybe it had no credibility because it was too vague or pointless.
But I respectfully requested ppl to post anything they could think of... not just to criticize.
I intentionally chose something simpler to understand because I wanted ppl to join in.

I will gladly post one of my more complex observations if you wish, Ive written pages about similar ideas like these in one of my journals...
Im sorry but I dont think its a waste of time. At the same time, im not trying to attack you L2R, I have often wondered myself how foolish I am to be spending time and energy on these types of thoughts.

Alasdairm you make a good point... but i ask you is that not good enough for you?
not good enough in what sense? i see a fairly mundane coincidence. you see something more. neither of those is really that noteworthy (to me).
I find it rare that we come across coincidences that are spot on.
perhaps there's a lesson there.
Btw... the infinity symbol doesnt look like the number eight, they actually àre identical in terms of looks.
identical? that depends entirely on which infinity symbol you choose to look at and which number 8. for example these two are far from identical:

e01.jpg

whereas these two are more similar:
i02.jpg
e02.jpg

And If all I have is a hammer... than all I have is a god damn hammer dude. There aint shit I can do about it.
perhaps you're not familiar with the saying i used. "if all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail" is a proverb which means that if you are focused on a single issue, then there's a confirmation bias that the issue in question is related to everything.

you're focused on 'strange' coincidences and so i'm suggesting that you're going to see them in places where others don't.
Thats like saying if all I have is eyes than all I can do is see.
yes. and no.

alasdair

please provide another example and include why you think it is strange.

also please use more descriptive subject lines in your future threads. from this one, readers can't really tell what it is about without clicking.

fair enough, I conceed to both rebuttals. Im obviously aware of the proverb. All I meant is if you have a hammer than you have hammer. Your going to have a narrowed perspective either way, because there are certain decided upon biases that there's nothing you can do about. Like I said earlier though, I just chose some really basic observations. Ill post some more now, but I was jc if anyone else had some... but what im realising now is that ppl arent very receptive of this way of viewing things as it is.

Once again before anyone jumps on this post and tries to crucify me...
these observations are purely grouped for their peculiarity. Not necessarily for being paradoxical or contradictory, although most probably are.

here we go:

1.the irony of death being likely the most wakeful slumber one ever slips into.
2.the tedious attempts to characterize human rationality and morality as something we all share.
3.the ability of ours to still feel heard and cared for and connected with one another, despite all the incoherancies and general not giving a shit about eachother.
4.counter-knowledge is the power over the people; knowledge is the power of a person.
5.The universe is but a mutltitude of single planets. A planet is but a multitude of single lives. A single life is but a multitude of single cells. Life pulses with the universe, expanding and contracting, like a heartbeat. this one is a little farfetch'd
6. Our dreams stem from information percieved in reality... and reality is merely a chance to chase those dreams. Directly experienced perceptions are virtually indistinguishable from dreaming perceptions (this is proven). Half the world dreams, while the other half wakes. the two are an inseperable knot.
7. Hope can exist only in the arms of despair; likewise, Righteousness is the very foundation for wrong-doing. These are also insperable knots. Seemingly unassociated and opposed, yet linked and counter-supporting one another underneath the surface.
8. One should be rested in the morning, yet often experiences a cluttered mind in the beginning of day and a cleared perspective into the late of night, when they should technically be tired.
9.We often experience conglomerations of both tasteful and refutable feelings, known as a repulsive attraction (ex. when one is disgusted, yet can't help but look).
10. With the idea of fate on our minds, our 'free will' is directed precisely by our attempts to stray away from a fateful decision. Thus we avoid the entirety of free-will by trying to avoid fate.
11. Everything is fluxuating within an illusion of stillness (heraclitus)

Anyways, I gave you some more food for thought. If youd still prefer to have me for dinner instead, then by all means. Like I said earlier, i dont think thinking about these things is a waste of time. but its all matter of opinion.

Lastly, Id like to ask you a couple questions... and you can tell me if you still think life isnt paradoxical, coincidental, ironic etc.

Why is it that the most irrefutably prettiest of flowers are made to prick they’re pickers?
Why does gravity push down on everything that wills to rise up?
Why do we search for things believed to be ‘missing’, only to realise that what we were looking for was in our possession all along?
Why is the end of something always bring the beginning of something new?
Are my observations still not that noteworthy?
AM I STILL AN IDIOT? LOL. probably-.-

because the flower and the thorns serve two different purposes. the flower attracts insects which ensure the flower's survival and the thorns defend against larger animals which would like to eat the plant. no paradox at all.

gravity acts on all objects. it's not a paradox at all.
Why do we search for things believed to be ‘missing’, only to realise that what we were looking for was in our possession all along?
because being in possession of something and having a line of sight to it are not mutually exclusive. no paradox at all.
Why is the end of something always bring the beginning of something new?
that's simply a matter of perspective but it's hardly a paradox.
Are my observations still not that noteworthy?
for me, yes.

Hey man... I clearly stated not every example was a paradox.
Some were coincidental, ironic or even just simply peculiar.
I think you're just arguing for the sake of arguing and giving no credit where its clearly due.
My findings are nothing short of miraculous.
But whatever, if you want to use your 'realism' approach to criticize my observations in a disdainful matter, thats fine.
I guess my way of thinking just a little too http://www.flickr.com/photos/67602445@N05/6154444625/ for you.

first, that credit is "clearly due" is a matter of opinion.

second, don't confuse brevity and clarity with disdain. i don't have contempt for you - i don't even know you. i'm giving you my opinion in a concise, straightforward manner and you seem to be taking it a little personally.

third, that your findings are "nothing short of miraculous", i'll agree to disagree.

perhaps you should revisit your participation here. don't ask for opinions - you'll get them.

alasdair

My findings are nothing short of miraculous.
Most of your 'findings' only show a slight shortsightedness, if anything. Eternity and infinity both have 8 letters...did you ever bother to check any other language? Life is not in constant motion, but in continuous motion - at least, if you dive deep into the real meaning of words. I could go on, but I will wait for your response first.

I think he should be awarded a strongly flavoured Spanish onion for mentioning Heraclitus.

Loads of flowers are really equally as beautiful as the rose.

I'm not sure what's going on either could someone clarify that for me ?

ok the the miraculous thing was a eh uh... 'j o k e'.
I didnt take it personally alasdairm. I asked for several things in this thread, and your only giving me one thing. And then when I try to argue what your saying you brush me off.

3rd_I_blind, continuous or constant still supports the same paradox. Continuous would imply a fixed rate all the same.

Loads of flowers are as beautiful as roses sure. Once again, these are just attempts to observe pecularities. In an above mention I said we find it rare that coincidences are ever spot on... and ive drawn these obsrvations from that mentality entirely.
Just because lots of flowers are beautiful, sure... does that mean I cant make a generalization about a certain beautiful flower that is known specifically for its outstanding beauty? The rose is well-known for this.

Just because I only speak english, does that mean I have to consider every other language first, before I can say anything about english? The english language is the most spoken language in the word. If im going to make a generalization about any of them, it would be wisest to make it about english.

As a last attempt to try and illustrate my opinion... Most of you are taking my observations extremely literally and simply trying disprove me by pounding out tiny details, that often have no bearing with what im getting at.
Alasdairm I've responded to every claim you've made and all you do is move on to the next thing instead of defending yourself... so please explain.

If you say in conjunction to,
'Why is it that the most irrefutably prettiest of flowers are made to prick they’re pickers?'

"because the flower and the thorns serve two different purposes. the flower attracts insects which ensure the flower's survival and the thorns defend against larger animals which would like to eat the plant. no paradox at all."

Then why do you think I used the word 'pickers' and not something like...
'the most irrefutably survival-savvy flowers'.
You take things out of context and say nothing about about an observation's validity from my perspective.
Try to picture the message of my words without dissecting every little detail.

I could just as easily say: "Why do forces tie us to the ground, when all we've ever wanted do... was reach for the stars." and leave out how gravity affects every object the same.
Now attack the entire idea of it, not the minutae.

you made some comments. i responded based on how i read your op. again, if you're angling for a specific response, you may want to consider participation online.

i read your op - more than once - and noticed you chose the word pickers. i don't think it has any bearing on the idea and i stand by my response. certain flowers have thorns for the reasons i outlined and the fact that those thorns might prick somebody who finds the flower beautiful and picks the flower is, to me, not strange or contradictory or paradoxical or even interesting in the slightest.

it is to you. it's not to me. i'm not demeaning you or attacking you - i'm giving you a response. a response you requested, mind you again, don't ask for input online if you're just going to get butthurt when it's not the answer you wanted.

it's interesting that you chose the phrase "the most irrefutably prettiest of flowers". for me, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and, again for me, the prettiest of flowers don't have thorns so your idea doesn't even make sense in the context of the flower i find the prettiest.

if you're not happy with my response because it doesn't address the message of your words, consider that communication is a two way street and perhaps you're not transmitting the message as clearly as you think you are? i'm demonstrably not the only person in the thread who's having trouble understanding what you mean...

alasdair

seriously, you call those "observations" and yourself "abstract"? i'd go through how insignificant or nonsensical all those 11 brainfarts are, but i have no interest in your mental illness and delusions of grandeur.

good luck, buddy. might be an idea to lay off the drugs for a bit aye.

common, a dozen roses? a dozen daisies? a dozen daffodils? a dozen roses. "a dozen roses".

(after a long argument with myself)

what if nothing is a paradox?

it's just where we're viewing from?
