Just thought this could be a helpful thread for some people who are just starting down the long shitty road of addiction. I think most people feel like they know what they are getting into but really have no idea.
For me one big thing that nobody addressed is how well drugs work at masking other problems. I think I figured that doing opiates would just be like getting drunk, a way to get fucked up for a little while and not think about your problems. I thought that the problems that come from addiction stem from needing more of the drug and thus money, relationships, and etc. fall by the wayside (which don't get me wrong definitely can happen). But what I did not understand is that being on opiates all the time changes the way you think. You feel like you've solved all your problems because you can't comprehend emotion. Anything that happens that is bad just isn't a big deal anymore and for some reason you feel like your head is so clear and your feeling so good you don't realize that the drug is what is making you think this way. The next big realization is that it is all temporary. At first this works remarkably well but unlike what i had expected that my issues would stem from the physical addiction and so forth, the bigger problem hit me. Even as my tolerance grew and i needed to take more and more to get high the drug no longer solved my problems no matter how much i took. You start feeling depressed and sometimes can't even explain why.
I am now relatively sober but i really wish somebody had told me that there is no coming back from addiction. I hate when people say that because
I think as anyone who wants to recover from addiction you need to believe you are in control of who you are and what you do and dont need.
But none the less there is some unfortunate truth to that statement. Once you dip your toes in the water the temptation will always be there and it might not hit you in the way you expect but it will always be a part of you.
Anyways I hope this may help some people who haven't yet fallen victim to the worst parts of addiction. However everyone is welcome to add things to this list cause im sure there is much more I am forgetting or have not had personal experience with.
