Dying for a burger? Why are trans fats still legal in the UK?
The trans fats in junk food are responsible for the deaths of around 7,000 people a year in the UK – and teenagers are most at risk. Elsewhere, these toxic substances are banned. So why are they still legal in this country?

She describes partial hydrogenation of vegetable oils as "twisting, warping, making the molecule the wrong shape". And the shapes of molecules are, she says, hugely important. "It's like a key that needs to fit a lock, and trans fats are literally twisted, warped versions of natural polyunsaturates... That makes them bad." She cites research last year into how trans fats react with some drugs, which showed that in combination with repeated amphetamine use, trans fats exacerbate the well-known psychotic effects. "This is a common street drug, and we also give amphetamines to ADHD children, albeit at much lower doses," she says, referring to medications like Ritalin. "This study showed that trans fats can increase the physical brain damage and manic behaviour associated with amphetamine abuse."

Why are unhealthy things still legal?
Because people have the right to choose to be unhealthy.
Putting political / economic pressure on companies to stop making such oils (or to use healthier oils) makes sense, though, for the public good.
Just as offering economic incentives to people not to smoke (cheaper health insurance, etc.) makes sense.
But if people choose to smoke, or to eat trans fats, or to shoot heroin, we cannot stop them just because it is not healthy.
The right to pursue happiness is, or should be, a basic human right.

All true, but lots of people are unaware of these nasties in our foods / drinks. If everyone was aware, fine.
But they are not so people are unwittingly consuming things they shouldnt really be and most of them would stop if they knew the harm that it could really cause.

Also take a look at all the Artificial sweeteners we still have in our foods/drinks too.

From what I've heard, the only thing they do is slightly mess with your hormonal balance temporarily, but it's not enough to make a difference.

Trans fats really are not good. They're pretty much a direct gate-way to some form of heart issue later on and all they do is extend the shelf life of products. I had no idea they caused other alternative brain abnormalities.

When i was a child, i suffered all the time with bad bad headaches. Every day nearly.

The only thing i can put it down to is drinking drinks with aspartame in it,
ever since i quit the aspartame i literally get a headache 3 - 4 times a year now.

Seriously. Artificial sweeteners are not good for you at all, the lab test results on rats and such are very bad results. I understand that people on this forums use and abuse what they must think are much more dangerous chemicals but in fact, some of the recreational substances we use are less harmful (in some ways) than these sweeteners.

Worth a look into, unless you arent too bothered about your health of course ,

I mainly dont use them as they do honestly give me a headache

I don't doubt there are some unmasked health defects involved with using them. But they honestly don't do anything more than sweeten my drinks.

But if you consumed sugar in place of artificial sweetener, you'd have instant results. Insulin resistance, obesity, in the long-term, possibly diabetes. I'd rather risk some unknown defect in artificial sweetener, than be fat and addicted to sugar. Most people have a weight problem, because they're too weak to curve their unhealthy addiction to sugar.

Yes sugar is a terrible thing in excess. Destroys the Immune system too in larger quantities

There are other options. For example, I do not eat sugar or artificial sweeteners. When I want something sweet, I almost always go for fruit.
Sweeter? Dried fruit.
Even sweeter? Maple syrup, or agave syrup, or honey all do the job very well for me, without sugar or the artificials.

Uh, aren't honey and syrups full of sugar!?
yes but they dont cut into my immune system like refined sugar does.
I guess brown sugar isnt as bad for you,

Anywho, what sort of Trans fats should i expect to encounter in a large donor kebab from my local?

Uh, aren't honey and syrups full of sugar!?

Well, the word "sugar" is used in two ways.
1) sugarcane, and processed/refined products from that plant
2) sucrose, fructose, and other sweet carbs

So, honey etc have sugar2 in them, but not sugar1.

Personally, I believe that sugar1 is very bad for people - I have apparently read the same things as darkside Sam about immune system suppression, and I feel that it affects me badly.
But honey and maple syrup, in moderation, can be very good for people - honey is anti-bacterial, for example, and maple syrup was recently shown to have certain chemicals not known from any other source, which appear to be health-giving.

the vat on all this shitty junk food should be upped massively, then maybe these fat cunts wont be able to afford to get any fatter

ive restricted my weekly diet to fruit, veg, salad, vitamin supplements, fish, etc. feeling pretty good for it. dunno how people can eat shitty junk food every day. i usually have a junk food binge on saturdays, alone with drugs, booze etc

What i commonly see happening in the UK is, people get fat... eat junk food... get fatter and Fatter...
... Then....

BOOM they are on DLA..

then they get even fatter and they get a free mobility car and they can just ride round and be fat and live off everyones wages.

(I only speak from people i know who DO NOT have underlying illness which cause obesity, Underactive thryroid For example)

not trying to be an arsehole or anything, but medically people who are very overweight are just harming themselves and are restricting their lifestyles

Fat people make skinny/atheletic people look better. I don't care, I'm in the fitness industry. Fat people are a good thing for sales :)
