Admin Attention Attn: Mods - Interesting in being one eventually, how to get there?

This is a labor of love for me, but it is still easy to get down... something like 5 BL members have died in the past month or two which just makes me think we aren't getting our statement across to people... it is for sure the most depressed I have been about my spot as a mod ever. The other one that gets to you is the little stuff, people not reading the rules, trying to sell drugs, etc...

You go from enjoying the site to making sure the site is enjoyable and helpful for others when you become a mod - something that I actually enjoy, but it certainly isn't for everyone.

That sounds pretty much on the money. But how sad, I hope you guys don't blame yourselves when a BL'er dies. I know it bums everyone out. But sometimes people are just going to do what they want to do, without realizing it's too much. Plus think of all of the people you HAVE helped... so that should make you feel good at least :)

SO spot on - unfortunately we have to pass over some people who really want the position because they want it for the wrong reasons and likely don't understand how much WORK goes into it and how much that can infringe on what was formerly a more care-free and enjoyable leisure activity. Naturally this varies to a degree depending on several factors such as which forum you moderate (I think a PM I received from one of the Sports & Gaming moderators today as the ONLY work he has done as a mod there EVER).

I think most of us understand that we are not causing these deaths but likely preventing them from occurring in greater numbers but many of us get a lot more hate mail than thank you's so it's difficult to fully understand the potential positive impact what we do has. I've been fortunate to receive some updates months or years later from people who I've corresponded with or even people who just read some of our posts and then later on shared how what we do had a lasting impact and that certainly helps... it's also a lot more pleasant than being called power-hungry nerds with no lives on power trips and so forth or having our family members threatened with some rather creative sex acts ;)

ahahaha... this has become a pretty amusing conversation to watch :)

You should see our staff forum! (hopefully, you will)

Yep hopefully someday!

Haha at first when you started talking about hate mail I was really taken aback just because I don't see the mods doing anything that would provoke that, I've only had good experiences with them. But then I remembered that this is a website about drugs and that at any amount of time there are probably people tripping on whatever, and so they get worked up over little things like their thread being closed or something idk. Well, that... and some people are just straight up rude anyways. Plus I imagine there is a fair bit of paranoia around... whether it's legitimate or a result of amp psychosis... so that probably doesn't help much either.

But harrassment is against the rules, can't you just delete the people who start harrassing you and making dumb threats?

I don't think I ever received any 'hate mail' when I was a mod.

When I was an admin it became more common, but that was mostly from the mods, not the users. ;)

Certain forums are unbelievably hard work to moderate - Other Drugs being one of the hardest, for example. You would not believe how much work is done behind the scenes all over Bluelight, just to keep the forum readable and useful and free of incrimination.

Being on staff completely changes your BL experience - the more time you spend modding, the less time you have to enjoy being a Bluelighter. Senior mods take on extra work across the site and spread themselves a bit thinner, and by the time you become an admin you're doing so much stuff behind the scenes you practically look invisible to regular users, many of whom will assume that you do fuck all.

You should just aim for a much easier one, e.g. modding Support. Best gig I ever had here. ;)

always tempting, but there is a disciplinary procedure to follow:

I agree. It's not for everyone, especially not those with busy lifestyles. If you have a life already outside of Bluelight, then modding probably isn't in your best interest.

^ I'm not sure I'd characterize it that way and it certainly depends on the forum, but you don't have to be more active than you desire and there are forums that require much less effort. Many of us have jobs, careers, families, active social lives and have found a good balance so I wouldn't say having a life and being on staff are mutually exclusive... not having a life certainly helps though ;)

To become a moderator, you've got to get loose. How loose? I'm talking loose!

Let me go ahead and break it down for ya...

Now that you're loose... Just go ahead and post thoughtfully. Keep harm reduction in mind when you post, and uh... that's it!

The editing posts, closing threads, merging threads, etc. is whatever, but it's providing users here with some real solid information that's the truly important thing. And I think that's probably what sets us apart. That's my two cents, anyway...

Hahaha I'm high and that video you posted was amazing, Verso!

This is probably an ignorant question, but what does a Forum Moderator do.. does that mean they mod the entire site? Like, they mod the mods? lol

Forum Moderator
FM is an account used to post official FAQs, guidelines, etc. so that those materials are not tied to a handle of a user who may or may not be around anymore.

Moderators have tools in specific forums, senior moderators have the same tools in all forums and are assigned to a certain amount of forums to oversee and support the moderators in and then administrators also have mod tools everywhere and oversee a certain amount of forums as well as the moderators and senior moderators.

^ I think he was referring to THE "Forum Moderator" account, of which there is only one. ;)

the FM account is a generic account (with no special powers) available for all staff to use, as described by Damien above.

by the way, I made his avatar. and hypocritically failed to repost the Support FAQ with that account. (edit: oops, yes i did. the 'announcement' of the FAQ is still under my name.)

Given the context of the inquiry, I inferred that she didn't know what the different titles were responsible for so I wanted to offer that. I didn't really understand smod or admin roles until like 6 months after I became an OD mod!

Well, I was asking about the Forum Moderator specifically, but I was actually just wondering about the difference between Senior Mods and Mods and etc. a few minutes ago haha.

And yep, pretty much Felix! :)
