I dont know if this is right place for this question, but here goes. I began taking 50mg a day of sertraline 3 days ago. Since I took the first pill, I have been subconciously clenching my jaw. I am afraid to place my tounge between my teeth because I dont want to bite it. I have had experiences with clenching my jaw during rolls and this is very similair. I have been feeling high the past few days as well. While I enjoy the floating feeling, I really want the jaw clenching to go away.. If this a common side effect or am I nuts? I have ativan to take when I have an anxiety attack, would it be a good idea to take it to see if my jaw relaxes?

I'm new to all this so go easy on me. :\

ativan will definitely help, but that is not a reasonable long-term solution. i've heard magnesium helps. what you should really do is talk to your doctor about it.

I would definitely speak with my doctor as hydro suggested. I honestly did not know that sertraline (Zoloft) had any euphoric value.

I has the same thing with venlafaxine (an SNRI, shares a lot of similarities with SSRIs like sertraline) - lasted a week or two. Felt like I was coming up off a shit pill - no euphoria but definite pupil dilation, jaw clennching, felt sicky and a bit twitchy/anxious..

Magnesium def helps my jaw clenching when I take MDMA, as Hydro duggested, but you have to take a decent dose - can't remember what, ages since I took any! Doesn't seem to qork for everyone.

I'd give it time. As I said, lasted about 1-2 weeks for me with the venlafaxine, probably only a week really. Goos luck <3

edit: just re-read your post - if you are feeling a bit high you should def speak to your dr as antidepressants can make people high or "manic"..

Not sure about anything specifically related sertraline but jaw clenching is an actual medical condition called bruxism which you can find out a lot about on wikipedia or any other webmd type source. I had a similar problem and thought it might have had to do with bad rolls I had took or other drugs but when I read some frequent causes of bruxism they were simple things such as lack of sleep combined with too much caffiene which could be enhanced further by high blood alcohol content and smoking. As soon as I cut down on the caffeine and got some more rest my problem stopped. However this maybe totally unrelated to what your issue is. Good luck!

Reduce any intake of other stimulants.

I recommend taking a magnesium supplement (magnesium oxide is the cheapest and can be found at any pharmacy OTC). 500-1000mg daily should reduce your jaw tension. I'm going to edit the title of your thread to reflect the drug we're talking about for easier searching in the future.

Just one of many side effects from antidepressants that generally goes away after 2-4 weeks. That euphoric feeling will go away after a couple weeks or so. Don't expect to feel high from antidepressants, they aren't recreational, what you feel is just a side effect. I'm also Zoloft for anxiety/depression (100mg) but I didn't notice any side effects because I've been on antidepressants for a long time so I'm well past them.

And yes, Ativan will help with the side effects of antidepressants. In fact benzodiazepines are often prescribed for a month or so to counterattack the side effects until they are gone.

Thanks everyone for the information. Its greatly appreciated. I am going to get some magnesium tablets tomorrow. I know the euphoric feeling is a side effect and will go away, but it is nice since i've been down for so long. I will keep everyone posted on whether the tablets help.

Please do keep us informed as i have just recently been moved onto 100mg per day Sertraline after being on Citalopram for 5 weeks with no real noticeable positive effects.

Im hoping the Sertraline will help with my Anxiety/Depression.

Old thread but I'm experiencing the same issue -- OP never confirmed about the efficacy of magnesium?

Magnesium Oxide is a laxative ⚠️ Not a Mg. supplement bio-availability ~4 %.

"Magnesium oxide is used for relief of heartburn and indigestion, as an antacid, magnesium supplement, and as a short-term laxative. It is also used to improve symptoms of indigestion. Side effects of magnesium oxide may include nausea and cramping ..."

Go for Magnesium-BysGlycinate or Taurate, these got additional calming properties.
l-Glycine and l-Taurine both have calming and beneficial action.

Have natural Bruxism that is a bit different then jaw-clench. And the last is very present when dosing MDMA. So it has a Serotenergic component. But taking a good dose of Amphetamine to, so it also seem s to have to do with Dopamine and or Nor-Adrenaline release.

For me Magnesium does nothing tried it for muscle cramp s to. Found out dis-balance in electrolyte s and/ or being de-hydrated triggers it. Are you well hydrated ?

You’re not nuts at all — jaw clenching and that slightly “wired/high” feeling can happen early on with sertraline, especially in the first 1–2 weeks. I’m on Zoloft myself and so far things have been going well, but I did notice some mild tension and restlessness at the start before it settled down. It’s thought to be related to increased serotonin causing temporary muscle tension or mild bruxism, and for most people it fades as the body adjusts. Simple things like consciously relaxing your jaw, gentle stretching, magnesium, or chewing sugar-free gum can help. Using Ativan occasionally can relax the jaw if anxiety is driving it, but I’d keep it as a short-term, as-needed option rather than a fix. If the clenching stays intense or the “high” feeling doesn’t calm down after another week or two, it’s worth telling your doctor — sometimes a dose tweak or slower titration makes all the difference.
Relaxing the Jaw, tip from my one and only good dentist:

"move your jaw sideways, this relaxes that muscle"

fact: 'Masseter
The strongest muscle based on its weight is the masseter, the primary chewing muscle. With all muscles of the jaw working together it can close the teeth with a force as great as 55 pounds (25 kilograms) on the incisors or 200 pounds (90.7 kilograms) on the molars.'

Actually surprised i still got teeth standing few molar s too. If this also happen s during sleep. Get a mouthgard, maybe you are a teeth-grinder like me. Did it since the first teeth came through. The look a bit like a boxer s bit. It will save your teeth.

When needed it can be warn during day time. But moving the Jaw sides way and relaxing it conscious might be enough. Or Botox that muscle. Is that done no idea but just popped up as idea ?

edit: anecdotally once read a Pubmed ? on the use of Clonazepam being very efficient in preventing Bruxism. The natural one no idea what is worse. Grinding your teeth till the Gum. With all problem s associated with it. Abscess in the Jaw, cavity s and grinding away filling s. Imagine all that Mercury i ingested. Blue filling day s.

Or being addicted to a Benzo with a a nice Prodent [toothpaste] smile.
till at least 50 +, I rather be addicted to taking a Rivotril at night 100 %.

Holy shit this is an old one. It's a who's who of BL'ers that I haven't heard from in years. Damn.

It would track that a Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor could cause this as a side effect. I don't think OP's reaction to this drug is what you would call "typical". The effects of antidepressants like Sertraline (Zoloft) are mild at the most, that is precluding any kind of serious interaction. I am no doctor. From my own personal experiences with these drugs combined with what I have read, jaw clenching to the point that it is interfering with your cognition (needing to keep your tongue clear of your teeth) is not a normal reaction.

This was from some time ago, so we might not ever really know the OP's full medical history or reasons for why or why not this would be befalling them. As always, we advise anyone with unanswered questions or concerns to consult with their medical provider.
