mental health rural v. city living

I live in the Highlands on Scotland surrounded by rolling hills, endless woodlands, eternal fields of heather, grass and wheat with wild goat, deer, beavers, otters, red squirrels, wild cat and mice, shrews and pine marten. It's fucking excellent and I definitely do not take it for granted....every day I walk in the woods and every day I praise mother earth and thank her for these blessings.
t.

I know they introduced beavers into Argyll in 2009 in KNapdale Forest, where are they in the highlands as I have not heard of this and would love to see them in the wild.

As for the highest rates can you give a link for that? http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/help-information/mental-health-statistics/ is for the basic stats on levels and percentages I could find.

Also the Scottish governement website has info and a few stats on this and I could not find it http://www.scotland.gov.uk/Topics/Statistics/Browse/Health/TrendMentalHealth

great discussion!

I feel the most at peace in nature, hands down. What rm-rf said about EM fields is a topic I've recently taken interest in and I think there is a lot to be said about it. If you live in a city it is very wise to run an electrical ground to any areas where you sit, relax, sleep. While you are resting, make sure the ground is attached on to your body. This will help protect you from EM fields and lower the standing voltage in your body.

Another thing to consider is the fractal composition of nature vs the ordered composition of constructed materials. The interplay of our own energy field with the fields around us has a very big influence on our psyches.

when im living with my mum in the country i feel depressed and bored but when i live with my dad in a suburban place near the city i feel more free and happier. this is maybe because when im at my mums house i never go out because there are no shops for miles. or maybe because i cant get "my fix" in the country were as in the city i can go out get buses places go to parties, etc.

but if i could have my friends in the country i think i would be a lot happier because i do like nature and all that type of stuff. But bac to the point. Im not sure if busy citys make people depressed or not. i think there are a lot of limiting factors other than setting.

Well, ive lived in a small town all my life, bout 10,000 citizens half are college peeps.
I started getting depressed a while back and just self medicate with weed. When there is no weed i Search for pills, when there are no pills or alcohol, Ill smoke fucking cigarettes or anything for a buzz. I used to cry when i had nothing, but i learned how to handle that part. I know ill be high again someday.

I believe substance abuse rates in rural areas are higher, because there is not SHIT to do but drugs. Everybody is on that fuckin meth bull shit and they can all fuck off.

Most people around me seem happy, but im not because i really feel that i dont fit in here. Like for some reason these people dont accept me, But i dont care.
Ill just smoke my mind to distraction till i can afford to go somewhere else by any means..If i like what i see in the big cities, then ill stay there, but if not ill come back.

I will miss my family tho so idk how that will work for the depression.

I beg to differ. Biking, hiking, walking, ... All are SO much more enjoyable in the country/rural areas versus in the cities. :)

It almost makes me sad to add that most people do not have a deep appreciation for nature anymore. It is boring to most and has no exciting impact on their emotional and physical beings.

So ... no appreciation for nature + lots of nature = a lot of negativity.

^ Very true. Most people find more fun in activities at man made establishments. And unfortunately such activities are few and far between in the country. :-/

I find that cinemas, bowling etc gave me headaches as it was sooo noisey so never enjoyed it that much. I love being outside. This weekend was spent out at sea watching from minke whales to seals, puffins a few shearwaters diving it was great. I think for mental health it seems to work for me not having to deal with the stress of a town.

I can not see how people find it so boring myself but know a lot of people who come up here do :(

^ When I went out of state and it was 115°F, I was loving it. The people I visited were dying. I was in my glory. I <3 hot temperatures. :D

I'll touch more on the other points in this thread later. Gotta go bike seven miles in the 75° morning that it already is. :P

Treefa, maybe if I lived in a really hot country I would not like it, but here it is fine.
I tried a city once but could not live there and returned to the country.
Yes I do go biking walking kayaking fishing, sooo much better than what I had in a city :)
