Texas rave leaves one dead, dozens in hospital

(CNN) -- A 19-year-old man has died in Dallas after an overnight rave party ended in chaos, a spokesman for the Texas city's fire department said Sunday.

Rescuers responded to a series of 911 calls from the Electric Daisy Carnival event for emergencies related to drugs, alcohol and excessive heat, spokesman Jason Evans said.

Some 20 to 25 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment, with one reported to be in critical condition. The cause of death for the man who died is not yet known.

The emergency calls had begun as early as 9 p.m. Saturday with at least 10 different rescue units sent to the scene at the Centennial Building in Fair Park, Evans said.

"The chaos finally came to a rapid stop when someone pulled a fire alarm around 1:30 a.m. and sent those remaining scattering," he added.

Two citations were issued by fire inspectors, one for overcrowding and another for failure to obey the order of the fire marshal. His request for a half-hour halt in the music to help manage the crowd was refused, Evans said.

alcohol is a drug; the media needs to stop automatically writing "drugs and alcohol"

This annoys me too! Then again if they just wrote drugs, automatically (since its a rave) ecstasy flies into everybodys mind.
"Drugs including alcohol" should be the way it is written, if even ONE journalist would write that, I'd be a bit happier...

This could have all been avoided if MDMA was sold in pharmaceutical grade quality. Rather than this street shit that can end up being anything. And yet the media will argue that the only substance to blame is MDMA.

The article doesn't say that a drug killed anyone... it implies that it was too hot and that people died from heat.

Was probably some dirt shit sold off as e. Very unlikely to be mdma.

You can still easily overheat with 100% pure MDMA. In fact it is very likely especially when exerting yourself (dancing). I thought this was common knowledge.

At a large event, it is less likely for quality stuff to be found in quantities...at least in my experience as well as others I know. What's the point of bringing out the high dollar stuff if people will buy whatever is available?

right: if your core temperature rises above 102 and you're dancing, you may collapse. In the summer sun, it is very easy for your temperature to rise above 102. This is an issue for me even when, sober, I go running in the South Florida heat and humidity.

Since MDMA has acute adrenergic activity, the body often cannot dissipate heat fast enough and the risk of heat stroke rises.

Alcohol, of course, does not help either.

What did they expect by starting the event in the afternoon (pretty much the hottest part of the day)? The day doesn't cool off till around 8 pm so you have lots of people on mdma in 90+ degree weather. What do you think is going to happen?

I was expecting to see articles here about problems at the Vegas EDC, since the temperatures there are so high.

but I guess everything went ok? that would be great (but of course they won't report that!)

Skrillex got ticketed for anyone wondering, he continued to play after the fire Marshall ordered him to stop.

Insomniac's fault for starting edc:Dallas at 4pm. It's fuckin hot in Texas.

I collapsed from heat at 'roo. I had had a crazy day and didn't think about hydration enough. I didn't have to stay in the medical tent the entire night but they sat me down and gave me a couple bottled waters and it worked wonders. They really need to make hydration more important at festivals and raves.

They also need to have harm reduction booths set up in different places.

Turning a blind eye does horrible things as they have proved.

Instead of caring about their money, they should care about the people attending their events.

How about some positive drug-related headlines?

Texas rave leaves one dead, hundreds satisfied

I had a bunch of friends who were there, like 10 of them. One girl rolled face off some weird "molly" they all got there (which I suspect to have been MDA, they were all seeing visuals and off balance etc) has been left with heart arrhythmia and really foggy learning and memory problems. She's a total space cadet all the time now and its not HPPD I dont think. They all said it was a pretty fucked up scene though.

I doubt it was MDA. if you look at the string of dozens if not hundreds of analogues coming out, we can all say that "molly" is bound to be very impure in the coming years, if not completely something else. be aware that methylone and mephedrone could easily be sold as pure mdma or "molly" and I have seen this first hand at festivals in only the past year.

I like about about 2 hours from Dallas and have some friends who went to the event.. it was 105 degrees that day

If it is who I am thinking of, the 19 yr. old went home and died. His girlfriend woke up in the bed next to him in the morning and he was dead. I know they were into mollys, bars, and whatever else was around. There might not be one single cause except poor judgement.
