Cartels have taken cruelty up a notch, says one drug trafficker: kidnapping bus passengers for gladiatorlike fights to the death

The elderly are killed. Young women are raped. And able-bodied men are given hammers, machetes and sticks and forced to fight to the death.

In one of the most chilling revelations yet about the violence in Mexico, a drug cartel-connected trafficker claims fellow gangsters have kidnapped highway bus passengers and forced them into gladiatorlike fights to groom fresh assassins.

In an in-person interview arranged by intermediaries on the condition that neither his name nor the location of his Texas visit be published, the trafficker also admitted to helping push cocaine worth $5 million to $10 million a month into the United States.

Law enforcement sources confirm he is a cartel operative but not a fugitive from pending charges.

His words are not those of a federal agent or drawn from a news conference or court papers.

Instead, he offers a voice from inside Mexico's mayhem — a mafioso who mingles among crime bosses and foot soldiers in a protracted war between drug cartels as well as against the government.

If what he says is true, gangsters who make commonplace beheadings, hangings and quartering bodies have managed an even crueler twist to their barbarity.

Members of the Zetas cartel, he says, have pushed passengers into an ancient Rome-like blood sport with a modern Mexico twist that they call, "Who is going to be the next hit man?"

"They cut guys to pieces," he said.

The victims are likely among the hundreds of people found in mass graves in recent months, he said.

In the vicinity of the Mexican city of San Fernando, nearly 200 bodies were unearthed from pits, and authorities said most appeared to have died of blunt force head trauma.

They would have significantly less money if they didn't profit from the drug war. Hell, they probably wouldn't really make it imo since there isn't such guaranteed profit.

were ancient romans human?

a case of social evolution? (for which technology is largely responsible)

I just mean their behavior.. We're beyond Ancient Roman times. This kind of stuff is just pointless.

Things are rarely pointless, this probably serves to increase fear of the gang in the eyes of other gangs and normal people, thereby increasing their power. It is really fucked up though.

Pointless as in what good does it serve?

None. They act like barbarians.

nicely written article. very interesting and enlightening.

the situation in mexico is WAY out of hand. eventually one of the cartels is going to fuck up and kill the wrong american or enter into the U.S. and cause problems in which they are not prepared to deal with the consequences. eventually the U.S. will have no choice but to enter mexico and put the cartels in their place.

the thing about that... is they're starting to make some pretty sophisticated vehicles, they're pretty organized, and they get our 100x inflated (due to prohibition) drug money. they're basically becoming the dominant faction in mexico (money=power), and eventually they will *be* mexico (or at least, its government)...

Unfortunately, reports indicating that US agencies have been supporting the cartels w/ arms and money is what have put the cartels into their current place.

^^^^^^

This is why.....if the USA had any interest in taking out these barbarians in Mexico, like they did in the middle east with Osama & Hussein, they would be in there kicking ass & taking names. We havent & wont do anything because our government is making a ton of money letting the drugs flow into the USA.

Everyone knows the CIA is involved in bringing narcotics in from Mexico & they are probably trading drugs for guns & what not.

Things like this was going on in Rawanda & Somalia forever & we just sit here & do nothing, why? Because we have no interests there. The thing is in Mexico, we have drug interests & that is the reason we dont do anything.

As far as these people go, they have lost any compassion for their fellow man & they will pay one day, one way or another. Unbelievable to see your sister or mother being raped by these barbarians & then have you grandparents killed because they are too old to serve any benefit.

Bot for nothing, but if I was the president of the USA, I would go to the united nations & demand the military march in there & take care of this right away.

If I was president I'd just send a few CIA S.A.D. teams in there to raise hell on the cartels, but I doubt that's gonna happen unless things start to really grab Washington's attention.

Guerilla warfare doesn't work. I mean it works to justify giving taxes to corporations and cause suffering to countless poor people but... Yeah look at the huge success that is Iraq and Afghanistan.

Well look on the bright side, Iraq no longer has a dictator and Afghanistan is no longer controlled by the Taliban. I'm not saying that we succeeded over there though, they're still dangerous regions and prior to the 2003 invasion of Iraq there were no insurgent fighters.
