Extracting elemicin from ground nutmeg

Hi, fellow BLers!

Instead of doing an introductory post, I'll go straight to the point. I acknowledge that both nutmeg and elemicin (from elemi oil) have been discussed on BL, but extracting elemicin from nutmeg not so much.

Elemicin is said to produce a mild euphoric feeling, while not fully hallucinogenic itself. As it's structure also resembles the one of mescaline, I'm very interested to get to know it better.

With alcohol, I can get myristicin + elemicin + safrole + bunch of other alkaloids from the ground nutmeg (most likely harmless for your health, not contributing for your nausea and not psychoactive).

From this on, I'm however lost. How should I go separating myristicin and safrole from the precious elemicin?

All three are soluble in alcohol and not soluble in water. Their XlogP values are similar. Same applies to their boiling points.

I'm really a beginner at all kinds of chemistry, but I'm also really eager trying this out. Life is all about learning, eh?

Any tips are appreciated, thanks!

elemicin has little effect on its own, i suggest trying some nutmeg oil(its better than powdered nutmeg).

Hi,

for me nutmeg is pleasant at times, but it also gives me nausea, headache and overall horrible hangover-like feeling for days. I believe it's either camphene, myristicin and safrole to blame for those nasty adverse effects (or most likely all of them are contributing to that). It's liver toxic and in addition to that safrole is carcinogenic.

I believe elemicin alone won't contribute to any of that. It should, however, produce mildly euphoric-feeling without any noticeable side effects.

The gold standard for getting essential oil is steam distillation. After you isolate nutmeg essential oil, fractionation over vaccum is really your only option for extracting myrsticin - thanks to the fact that the XlogP's are so similar.

Alcohol extracts of the nut will also pull fats, tannins, sterols and the like. By the way, there aren't any active alkaloids in nutmeg nor are myrsticin/elemicin alkaloidal.

I have a strong belief that myrsticin is the active component in nutmeg. Nutmeg essential oil will have a lot more active component by weight than an equal volume of nutmeg absolute (made with ethyl alcohol).

It looks like I'm basically screwed then :)

I'll have to go looking out for other alternatives! Thanks for your replies.
