Need Creative Ways To Get Neighbors To Stop Smoking Inside

I live in a non smoking apt -- built when they used tissue paper. I have an auto-immune issue that makes me WRITHE in pain from inflammatory agents, cigarette smoke being one of them.

THERE IS NO ESCAPE FROM THE SMOKE from downstairs as they chain smoke in the apt -- it comes through the vents, walls, cracks, etc.

I can't close the window, it doesn't work.

The manager is passive, I have alerted him to the issue, he does nothing.

I am destitute due to my health issues -- I can't work, and my H can't really either because he is either taking care of me or our kids.

What I am looking for IS CREATIVE ways to get them to stop. BTW, they are very mean, bullies, and don't give a crap about anyone -- we've tried to approach them and they say they'll stop, I"m sure this is what they say to the mgmt.

Any creative ideas? :)

Call the cops? Or end up really sick from the smoke (real or fake) call 911 and rush to the hospital. Hopefully they feel bad or you can just sue them.

contact the owner rather then the mgmt.?

IDK, you all are kind of cornered with this situation other-wise - maybe a local 3rd party 'housing-authority' if the owner doesnt follow their rules.

being at home most the day with a compromised immune-system, and kids leaves you more then enough room to raise your own stink - i think.

When you say non-smoking do you mean those are the rules laid down by the landlord, or you just choose to make it non-smoking?

If I were you I'd be real with them and just say look, I'm raising kids upstairs, and it's not right or healthy for them to be breathing in your second hand chemicals. Don't come to them aggressive or threatening, but more as a concerned parent and adult. You both live there, and compromises need to be made. Try seeking out the super or the landlord and explain to them the problem. For the mean time do you think keeping a fan going or something will at least help circulate the smoke a little so it's not as bad?

I don't know what you mean by creative ways, but I'm assuming some sort of tactic you can use to drive them out. And to that I say you get what you give. Is that really the kind of influence you want your kids growing up with? Your a parent, and it's not responsible for you to start having a pissing contest with your immature neighbors, it makes you no better than them

These do sound creative. :)

To the last poster, yes, it's a non-smoking apt. They are supposed to smoke away from the windows even.

THEY DO NOT CARE. It's some kind of personality issue, because they are bullies to boot.

Well if they signed the lease fully aware that it was a non smoking apt then you can take legal action. You can file a civil suit at your municipal court, or contact the super/landlord.

And if they don't care as you say, then you can sue them too

^ yes...

and once you have them in the court-room, then this is where you let out the creativity.

i have an auito-immune-d/o, or any actually that my body decides is there or to re-create... and ill go and say that i am creative personally also, with maybe too much experience sitting in court rooms;-p - so i can only jest at the fact that you could find a whole bunch of, "pokers" for them... but keeping it simple is what will get you guys gone quicker; with what you essentially deserve and need.

this goes your neighbors and land-lord as well
, whether they like it or not -
hehe

=D

how creative are you looking for?

break into their apartment while gone, find packs of cigs, drop a teeny bit of PCP in every cig. problem solved.

or find some extremely flammable agent with no smell and put that in every cig, maybe they'll keep smoking, but theyll look pretty stupid doing so with no eyebrows. lol.

No, creative was not a euphemism for illegal -- but, those methods sounds effective, if for nothing else due to the lethality at risk!

PIP, can you elaborate? Do you have autoimmune? I was a little confused, as I am suffering from last nights smoke fest. I HAVE A SMOKERS COUGH!!! If that tell you anything.

I've had to start using a nose spray to stop having sinus infections all the time, flonase, or something to that effect.

I'm hoarse -- that is due to the dilaudid but also the smoke.

I was thinking along the lines of camp-prank kinds of things, although, in today's society, those all might be illegal, too.

Plus -- is is wise to take bullies to court? Yanno, the kind of bullies that might kill you? IDK... 8o

maybe sneaking out would be better if you think they might kill you...
;-D

i can only elaborate so much but, haha... its a lot and hard to spell- if your familiar we can begin with a sero-negativespondoatropy - ankylosing sponolitis, auto imminue gastritis, bi-lateral sacro-illitis, osteo-arthritis, an odd elevated case of the leukocytosis which is misplaced seeming, and heh- a bit more stuff.

i can have any autto-immune d/o at any given moment, and then not* pooooof

oh my

pranks?!? lol- what are you thinking?

<3

Well, I know I'm a doormat to them, lol. But, I HAD NO IDEA how amature I was!!!

Small potatoes!

I actually do have a horrific autoimmune disorder -- this is making it much worse.

I think I might just keep bugging them.... I hate LITIGATION. I can't even get to the store most days, clean the house or work a hobby. How am I going to wage a court case??

I am suffering for this, though. I sniff CONSTANTLY. I know a pastor thought I was on meth the other day (between being "off" due to dilaudid and the sniffing).

:)

you can fight this, are you "disabled"? if so once you get the ball rolling or at-least in your play, i dont think you would be expected to do much from there - most action would take place through the mail id guess.
i could imagine the apt complex offering to let you out of your lease with no penalty initially -as a front- talk to your rheumy or dr's and get some support from them to present to the apartments management, they might just be blowing you off thinking that you are bullshitting or something.

IDK, seems you already have the win flat out already, with a lot less "litigation" then going back-and-forth with all of them yourself- no need for pranks ATM not for now at-least
;-D

Take them to court. And honestly, get a weapon. If they are anything like you say they are, they will be PISSED once that letter comes in the mail.

Honestly I can't believe your even considering ways to prank these people or whatever. I'm sorry but your an adult and a parent on top of that. With people who depend on you and look up to you as their main influence. There are adult ways to handle things and then there are childish ways. I can only see you doing something stupid, get thrown in court for whatever it is you didn't think through, become labeled an unfit parent, and then you won't have kids you need to worry about.

I'm not trying to bash you, but you sound like a teenager. Whatever it is you decide to do at least think it through beforehand, your decisions affect more people than just yourself, and some of those people have nothing to do with this situation, it's not right they need to suffer due to your immaturity

Report them to the landlord.

Cigarette smoke is filled with toxins so of course your neighbors should not be smoking inside in an apartment building, shame on them. How hard is it to walk outside? Do they know this is causing you pain?

Does your apartment complex have a fire-resistant sprinkler system? =D (nah really don't do anything to cause it to go off... I'm sure it would be a bad legal situation at best, but really that made me smile on the inside lol)

These do sound creative. :)

That is really shitty and unfortunate. It really isn't that hard to go outside to smoke. :\

I would seriously consider reporting them. If this is a specific non-smoking apartment, the landlord should be alerted that the tenant is not only breaking rules but devaluing the property; they can be kicked out for this, and have their security deposit taken in part or full in order to "sanitize" the apartment.

Hotel rooms have a similar scenario; I remember staying at one where they required everyone to sign a separate form saying that they would get charged $400 to clean up the hotel room if you smoked in it. I didn't sign it (they must have been distracted or something) but I am also a non-smoker and am disgusted by tobacco smoke so I would never have even thought to smoke in the room. I just don't like giving them written permission to even be able to charge my card up another $400 in the first place.

-------------------------------

Bottom line: the best way to try to convince someone not to smoke, in a creative way, would be to selectively tell them the negative health effects of smoking. For women, it impacts on their ability to produce estrogen, for men, it is the leading cause of penis cancer in developed countries, as well as a contributing factor if not the causation of many people's impotence later in life.

You could also show them what smoker's lungs look like post-death compared to non-smoker's.

If all else fails, you should take them to court. If you are under the age of 18, I would have your parent take care of this, if they are able to.

I think you're reading their post wrong, I believe they are a child.

They aren't being immature at all.

It's immature to smoke in a non-smoking apartment. Do you know how exceedingly easy it is to find a building where it's OK to smoke cigarettes and whatever-the-fuck else drugs you want? It's really easy, trust me.

Why be such a dick to smoke in a non-smoking building? :\

^^yea it threw me off too.

OP I just wanna clarify, some of what I said mightve come off as antagonistic and I just want u to know I'm not tryin to be a dick. Some of these creative ways your asking for could easily throw you into a much worse situation. You could face legal repercussions, lose your kids, apartment, tons of money in fines. Just think out whatever it is your planning on doing before you do it, and always keep your kids in mind in whatever you choose to do.
