I haven't investigated metal thats been happening for several years. I need a recommendation for good recent records of a death metal variety. Not shit youve been listening to idly, I need something you know in your heart is on the level. And none of this '-core' crap where the kids are doing karate dancing at shows I dont know what thats supposed to be but its not on the level im lookin at. Ive been pullin out my old cryptopsy and decapitated records and feel like there must have been something from the last 4 yrs ive been tuned out that can touch these. Im not jaded on style, but very jaded against boring 'me too' type records. Help me bluelight.

Good call, always forget about the internet radio thing.

I still have my DsO cds from back in the day. Good stuff but black metal wasnt doing anything that memorable last time i was tuned in, anything decent was either DsO/NED knockoffs or bands doing that clinical, sparse sound mayhem started with grand declaration. On that note tho, i just came across funeral mist 'salvation' in the used record shop. Savage.

What the hell have they been lacing ur bud with stickychron, im not a genre warrior but stoner metal type stuff has very little to do with black metal. the fact theyre even named a '-metal' is virtually a formality.

I personally think the best death metal album ever is Morbid Angel's Blessed are the sick.

Two of my favorite death metal albums are In the Absence of Truth by Isis (2006) and Ghost Reveries by Opeth (2005) - very brutal, excellent musicianship, and very apparent psychedelic influences, esp. in Isis. Definitely download these.

Its up there. I had altars of madness playing as I read that. The form sounded so fresh back then. Wild guitars, real drums, and there wasn't such an impetus to stick to a predefined sound. Listen to the middle of 'chapel of ghouls' off altars and tell me that doesnt sound like early emperor.

Was going thru my mp3 library and ended up listening to some raunchy. theyre one of the few 'metal-core' type bands that doesnt agonize my gag reflex, as in their tunes actually have songwriting strength as opposed to all the expendable happy meal deathcore thats polluting the scenes recently. If you like that type of sound, with the occasional clean vocals and all, i recommend. im surprised they havent broken in much in the states.

I would recommend Cosmic Atrophy's Codex Incubo, which is similar in style to Timeghoul and Demilich.

Blaspherian's Infernal Warriors of Death is good too, though more in the vein of old school death metal.

^^Demilich is the shit dude good call. Also the only response actually relevant to the aims of the thread.

The Controtionist. Definitely. They are a "Core" band, but they are extremely progressive. Youtube the song "Contact". The guitar work and the song itself is amazing, it got me hooked. They have musicality beyond everything around them. If you like "Contact", check out "Fourish". If you like that, buy the album. Breath of fresh air for metal as a whole/

Volumes, Structures, and After the Burial are all good too. A little "-core" but very musical. Meshuggah is a must, and Pelican is instrumental. They are really good.

I picked up the new Bodom last week and it's pretty strong. Even the weaker songs hit nicely as this definitely the best production mix theyve had since Follow the Reaper. Also, new Megadeth, the Endgame album, i guess its not really new, its a couple years old i guess? Its seriously fuckin good in a major way.

I was killing time on youtube and made two related discoveries, neither of which is likely news to anyone other than me: first, that Decapitated have a new drummer called Krimh. Second, this Krimh dude has a catalogue of self-performed pieces on youtube composed of some of the freshest ideas ive heard in death metal in a while. Dude needs his own band. New Decap album sounds like its pretty slick as well from the preview.
