Misc How would I define tolerance?

Would my tolerance be based off the amount I require just to feel the initial affects of a drug; or base it off the amount I require for the desired "high"?

Careful not to confuse "tolerance" with "dissatisfaction".

For example, I used to get high off of 5mg of hydrocodone. But eventually I tried more and that became my new standard.

5mg will still have the same effect as it used to because my tolerance hasn't increased, but I'm disappointed in the feeling now because I know how good 20mg feels, so that is my new definition of "high".

"In physiology, physiological tolerance or drug tolerance is commonly encountered in pharmacology, when a subject's reaction to a drug (such as an opiate painkiller, benzodiazepine or other psychotropic drug) decreases[1] so that larger doses are required to achieve the same effect. Drug tolerance can involve both psychological drug tolerance and physiological factors. Characteristics of drug tolerance: it is reversible, the rate depends on the particular drug, dosage and frequency of use, differential development occurs for different effects of the same drug. Physiological tolerance also occurs when an organism builds up a resistance to the effects of a substance after repeated exposure"

Ive wondered this too. I normally base it one my desired high but my desired high isn't nodding off like others.

Is it not obvious? Tolerance is when "X" amount of Drug does not get you high as it used to.

This is actually just one extreme degree of tolerance, as long as X can be interchangeable for many values and not just one.

Tolerance can be defined either as when a single given value for X in the above sentence doesn't get you as high as you used to get, or when only an increased value of X will get you as high as you used to get.

Tolerance can also apply to non-recreational drugs.

Thanks to all. Just trying to clarify for safety purposes as I try new opiates and other drugs.

When someone says they have a 60mg oxy tolerance am I to assume that 60 feels like 30 used to? No, you missed my question.

When someone says "I have a 60mg oxy tolerance" they are using tolerance incorrectly and should say "I have a 60mg oxy habit" or something similar. The reason one may use tolerance is because it is often in response to the question "What is your tolerance like?" A valid question asking for clarification of their body's ability to handle the drug, but not one which can be explicitly and directly answered by a single quantitative dosage amount (though that is what they are often looking for in the first place).

Tolerance has no concrete value associated with it and if you see someone use it in a way you that is unclear you are encouraged to ask for clarification.
