Radiation protection? (japanese radiation plume)

please do a little more serious research and you'll learn that there is no cloud of radioactivity coming to socal tomorrow. the radiation from japan will be dissipated over the ocean into the atmosphere. if you're still worried, buy yourself a big umbrella in case of fallout.

ALL the news stations on tv were talking about it, i dont need to do serious research.

and theres like a shitton of people buying potassium-iodine pills in socal in hopes to protect themselves from the radiation.

The people buying iodine pills are wasting their money. if you lived in japan within 50 miles of the nuclear plant, they would be helpful. Isn't the US West Coast about 4,000-5,000 miles away? If the news is leading you to believe you have anything to worry about, it's because of the ratings they get for creating a panic.

I live on the california coastline as well.... iodine pills are also sold out here... the media is fear-mongering though. You have nothing to worry about. The amount of radiation that is going to make it here is not enough for us to be concerned with. There will be trace amounts, but its not going to be enough to hurt you.

hmm alright i guess.

im just like extremely paranoid:D

shit i bought some of that and i live on teh east coast. I'm planning for future earthquakes. Many nuclear powerplants will fail in the future. Might as well stock up now...

They might fail if they get hit by a 25ft tsunami that floods the cooling pump generators, shorts out the connections to the grid and sets off the SCRAM leaving the reactor with no power for cooling, yes. Otherwise no, you're paranoid and you really are wasting your money.

Sea kelp contains loads of iodine. I'd be taking a course of potassium iodide (as I live on the West Coast and despite what the mainstream media has to say, there actually exists traces of radiation that have made it here through the jet stream) but with the run on it, I couldn't get any.

Sea kelp pills are available at your local natural foods store. I got a few bottles, one for my emergency preparedness bag, one for my dad, and one for me. I am taking a 14-day course and the bottles were a whole $5 apiece.

A lot of people I know is taking them. It's never a bad idea to be prepared.

you can get the povidone iodine at any pharmacy and apply it topically if you really want the iodine. Anyway it doesn't protect against plutonium, cesium, or xenon-133 which are even more toxic so its kind of pointless either way.

I think you will get the most benefit by eating sea vegetables like spirulina, kelp, and chlorella. They detox the radiation from your body and contain iodine. Niacin also helps dialate blood vessels to speed up the detox process. Adaptogens including ginseng, schisandra, and eleutherococcus are all highly effective at mitigating the effects of radiation on the body.

Do you all get this worried over an xray or a cat scan too? You'll be exposed to less radiation from japan than from a single xray or a high altitude airplane flight.

@mariposa & dcraver877-

thanks for the replys :) my multivitamin has 200% dv of iodine, is that good enough?

dont take vitamin suppliments for iodine

eat more kelp, seaweed, and things of that nature. add bladderwrack to your tea.

Agreed.

Don't be scared. Don't waste your money. Instead, do some research and put this into perspective.
A very quick google search brought up radiation illness information on Hiroshima and Nagasaki:

Analyses of deaths due to cancer among the Life Span Study cohort of atomic-bomb survivors from 1950 through 1990, published in Radiation Research (146:1-27, 1996), are summarized in Table 2. These results are for survivors who were exposed to significant radiation doses (See Question 11).

copy paste messed up the formatting. You will have to follow the link to see the tables better. This data is from radiation exposure from atomic bomb blasts, but I dont' think you are going too far out on a limb to compare this to a partial melt down. To summarize, there is no danger unless you are very close to the plant.

you get more radiation being on your cell phone all the time!

but if you're really worried eat nori

just made my mate tea with a large dose of bladderwrack

im just including a lot of zi chi (seaweed), kelp powder, and things of that nature in my diet at least every other day.
