I've searched the internet on this subject, and can't find any information to explain why taking vitamin B12 has this effect on me. Just a single, tiny pink Spring Valley vitamin B12 supplement (8333% Daily Value) will make me drowsy within half an hour, improve my mood, thereby reducing anxiety and/or depression, and gives me music euphoria.

The effects are so strikingly similar to my experiences with painkillers that for a while I was wondering if someone in my family had replaced the vitamins with OxyContins, but I eliminated that possibility. No one in my family has ever had that prescribed, and the pills are tiny, shiny, pink, and have a score on one side merely for aesthetic purposes because it doesn't help you break the pill in half.

It seems that B12 is supposed to increase metabolism, but it makes me sleepy. And I've never read of it giving anyone a mood lift, much less music euphoria. If I had to compare the effect it has on music to that of other drugs, out of DXM, Diphenhydramine, and Opioids, I would choose opioids.

I don't know where to put this thread; I hope it is in the right place. I understand that vitamins aren't technically drugs, but it seems to be having an intoxicating effect on me. In fact, I use it to soften the pseudoephedrine crash.

Also I should note that, there seems to be a dose ceiling because regardless of how many pills I take (I've taken 8 before, out of curiosity) it is never more potent than taking one or two pills.

Oh, and I think it is a vasodilator because it makes my veins huge sometimes.

I have no idea how vit B12 is causing drowsiness, let alone any type of opiate effect. It really has nothing to do with opiates in any way I can think of. It does effect melatonin, but i think in a way that would decrease drowsiness.

I notice that B6 gives me an "up" feeling, kinda like excited for something, can't figure out what I'm getting all suspenseful about. Its mild at best, but at least you know the vitamins are in your body :)

I can't think of anything explaining your experience apart from placebo. Before you go bashing me because of that, remember that placebo is an incredibly powerful effect and some drug developers believe that it is getting stronger then it was in the past and is costing pharmaceutical companies lots of money as an obstacle in their research.

B12 is a vasodilator, but I don't think that could be causing this. When I was B12 deficient I was taking a 1000mg supplement but didn't experience any immediate effects like what you describe. Over the long term I definitely noticed a difference in mood and anxiety/depression.

I understand why you are so quick to claim placebo; it is a vitamin, after all.

However, I can confirm it is certainly NOT placebo. The first time I took the vitamin, I expected an increase in energy or alertness. I was surprised when I was so tired I could barely keep my eyes open. When I went to sleep, I slept soundly for 12 hours, and I had horrifying vivid nightmares (I forgot to list that as another effect B12 has on me).

A couple days after, i took it again (I wasn't exactly sure if this vitamin had caused this effect) and yup, all those symptoms again. Since then, I've been taking it to go to bed occasionally, and a couple times for anxiety.

I understand this makes absolutely NO sense to anyone here; it doesn't to me, either. I honestly wonder sometimes if someone at the factory sprinkled some opiates or something into it. But that makes even less sense, because taking multiple pills has the same effect as only taking one. That makes it sound like placebo too, but I promise, it isn't. 8)

B vitamins make me drowsy too, but definitely not euphoric in any way. Lucky you! Wonder what would happen if you got a B-12 injection? :D

Lol 8o

Unfortunately it seems like there is a very small ceiling dose, and beyond that there isn't any extra effect. And one pill matches that ceiling.

Oh and, I didn't mean to suggest that the drowsiness is euphoric; I meant, it makes me drowsy and improves my mood. It is a little way off from being actually euphoric. Now, combine that with the sensational enhancement it has on music, and it is almost euphoria.

They make me drowsy as well..especially B-complex. I have to take them at night w/a late meal, since they pretty much knock me out. However, i tend to feel euphoric when not on my B-vitamins, altho i've been taking huge doses of pharm-quality B-vitamins, amino acids trace minerals etc daily for over 10 years now... Also, high doses of say niacinamide especially make me dysphoric.....

Not sure what to make of my case as i've probably altered my neuro-chemistry quite a bit over the years..
but for you i'd guess the euphoria is caused by a previous nutritional deficiency
