Hey all, i guess this ain't HR related totally..

But i'm an AusDDer, and lately shit got me thinking... Tomorrow my son turns 3 (yay for him)

Anyway, I got into a diploma course - and am on my way to a proper career that will hopefully land me somewhere that's not prison.

I'm sure most of you know something of my past. But i beg anyone who wants a way out of a criminal life to go look into education - especially if you have a criminal record and you're under 24.

Trades don't seem to care so much for criminal history... anyway i'm doing building n stuff, pretty heavy shit when i spent so long a bum.

So people, i don't know how much time i'll have to contribute, although my weekends should be fairly free if i dont have too many assignments... (time to learn cad)

End Rant - mods don't delete, i hope this motivates others the way myself, my family and a few others have.

Oh btw, it doesn't mean i'm getting clean from drugs entirely - just that now i have to fucking control shit and im busy and mind is occupied.

It helps. trust.

anyone else feel free to post their experiences with doing something to make themselves more than just a bum loser who knows a lot about drugs.

No this is a good thread I think. Even for people without a criminal record, getting employment or studying to create new opportunities for yourself is a great thing.

Especially if you have had problems with substances. Once you get clean, you can suddenly find you have a lot of free time that used to be spent on scoring and using. If you don't fill that time up, it's easier to fall back into old habits.

Glad to hear you are doing well, Ibis. And mazel tov for your son. :)

It is bro, i've tried for years and the only way i've kept myself occupied whilst not on - video games, anime, then occasional (and sometimes a bit more than occasional) use. Of all substances not just heroin.

Heroin has been my drug of choice, but shit i went through done, bupe, the whole fucking loop, it feels like being a basketball that keeps being thrown through a hoop.

The only way I reckon is with will power, brains - a long term goal and a good distraction (not chemically related).

I'll get there :) thanks blondie... and oh you wait how rapt the lil one is gonna be tomorrow when he see's what daddy bought him ;)

Keeping busy is definitely a good way to help reduce drug use. I've found since school that whenever I'm not occupied regularly, like in school holidays, I get way more depressed and more prone to use. Also you generally have to keep things under some degree control if you want to stay in school/uni/work.

Congrats and good luck :)

Good for you man, any step in a positive direction is a good one.

I took a hobby and went and studied it at uni. Now I get to learn about drugs all day AND make my mummy proud ;D

Winning and grinning all the way to some serious pay packets.

while a job is good, its not everything...

it will keep you busy, not happy

not that ive had a serious problem with drugs, i have only really abused weed and went crazy (well i thought i did) for a little bit from a few bad trips

its good that your on your way to a brighter more fulfilling future, but you must find peace and fufilment in every moment

enter spirituality

its not religion, there are no rules, you can still kill hookers and listen to industrial hardcore without being condemed to eternal suffering

the biggest life changing thing, imo, is realising you are not your mind, dis-identifying yourself from your mind, your ego.

the present moment is all you have- experience, senses

I highly recommend:

Eckhart Tolle - Power of now (hard copy book) youtube him
OSHO (best imo) - Spiritual badass motherfucker! Read this - on ego/mind
Alan Watts - Free PDF book on Zen

Being spiritual through Zen will save you from so much suffering caused by your mind...

After my bad trips i couldnt smoke weed without fully flipping out, massivly paranoid and thought all my friends who i trust were laughing at me or aginst me.

Now, thanks to Eckhart/Zen, I can smoke myself retarded when im not studying or at work and be fully chilled, at peace

just joking about killing hookers, but not about industrial hardcore, or shranz, whatever your into ;D

yo i'm not quite into the hippy stuff, thanks for the support yeah... but fuck spirituality. what's real is what i can see..

And if things don't change its a jail cell and a son without a father. So i've taken steps.

Yeah i can keep clean enough to study, especially since now they let you use a laptop in class instead of crappy books, because i have horrid handwriting and can type faster than most people talk.

I always enjoy your posts Ibis and have missed seeing you around lately. Glad to hear things are going well for you and good on you for doing the hard yards so you can be the best possible dad for your son!

Some people enjoy their jobs

+ 1. I love my job, even though sometimes it's hard and there are parts that could be better... for the most part I really enjoy it as it's in the field I plan on building a career in. There's a difference between a job you hate, a job you can put up with and a job you like.

Ibis: What did you get your son for his birthday?

yo i'm not quite into the hippy stuff, thanks for the support yeah... but fuck spirituality. what's real is what i can see..

Thats all that Zen is- all that you see, experience, feel... IS

Not good, not bad.
just is.

Thats all zen is. No meaning- just experience.

So your view is in a way spiritual, hippy :P

I'm happy with my job too, im an accountant who works for a very good firm that is rather laid back, everyone knows i smoke, rave, drugs.. etc..

But as long as im productive they dont care.

Some of the directors used to smoke a quart a day, but thats in their past now..
They have not smoked for like 15 years, but they dont condem me for my use.

Just trying to spread the knowledge of self so people will stop suffering.

All good :)

I haven't worked a proper job since 2008. and since then i copped a record, and a habit... I haven't really needed to work but yeah - there's a good 50yrs ahead of me yet... if not more... but hey with my lifestyle my life expectancy should be fairly low.

Changing your routine from waking up and thinking - what drugs can i do today - to waking up thinkin it's time to go work.. hard shit to break out of - luckily im an early riser :)

well shit aint you special getting and accepting job offers

ive spent 2 years look for work here in this shitty excuse for a tourist town/coast
topped out at 20 job applications a day some weeks and get nothing or an automated "sorry you were unsuccessful"

if you've ever been on the dole you know you cant just sit around all the time, you've gotta take courses and get tickets..
still not one of them has came in handy.

when i see someone decline jobs cause it cuts into their getting high time we usually end in a punch up... funnily enough most of them have a great job now

:|
time to get out ay

Nice work MrIbis.

The only way I reckon is with will power, brains - a long term goal and a good distraction (not chemically related).

Reckon you're spot on with that one ;). Having a hobby that I'm really into helped me out heaps...along with working a steady job and hanging out with people that don't abuse drugs to the extreme. Keeping busy is a must for me...when I have free time and get bored, that's usually when I'll want something.

The longer you stay on the 'straight and narrow' the easier it gets...and I don't mean never touching drugs again, gotta be realistic :D

You manage to get off bup alright? I'm on 0.2 which is ridiculously small...just can't seem to do the final jump yet.

Congratulations to your and a very big Happy Birthday to your little boy.

Ive recently started a tertiary preparation course an if you don't know what that is the name pretty much speaks for itself. I moved out of my mum's place 2 months ago and I think because of that my relationship with her has grown. I go see her most days on my lunch breaks because she lives just up the road from my work. I started antidepressants a week ago after telling myself for sooo long I don't need them or a doctor. I'm finally getting my life on track and it is the best feeling, no drug can compare.

Good luck to everybody else who is struggling to find their direction, never give up hope.

I've just started Uni and im starting to put my life together and get some direction, feels good like you guys have said.

I don't have any experience with addictions or criminal records n the such so all i can say is congrats Ibis and keep it up mate! Im sure you're/are becoming a great dad :)

peace

heya Mr Blonde this would have to be one of the most important harm reduction threads around good on you for keeping it open and seein gthe value in this.

realistically there are fewer and few conversations about things outside of drugs in this forum and for quite a while it was discouraged, but life outside of drugs needs to be balanced alongside use of any licit or illicit substance.

when i get a chance to re post in here i will put up a link to a journal article i read recently about the effect of presentation of alternative rewards affect on on addiction (admittedly it is about lab rats, but i think the human population can be quite akin to these white furry critters).

but basically summed up the higher the amount of potent / important alternative rewards in your life, the less likely rats relapse or fall back into the same pattern of use. although there is always going to be the neuroadaptation memory in your brain which you might have to fight every once in a while but the human psychological/ values around these rewards create constructs that stop people from use back at those levels.

im sure this is one of the big changes between dependant people and non problematic users; non problematic users have mcuh more opportunity to access these alternative reward pathways.

Hey all, i guess this ain't HR related totally..
So people, i don't know how much time i'll have to contribute, although my weekends should be fairly free if i dont have too many assignments... (time to learn cad)

What CAD program are you going to learn mate?

If you enjoy it and get good at it, you can really build a great career with it and earn bulk coin!

Shit man, so many guys on here that like drugs, learning about pharmacology, chemistry, neuropharmacology and biochemistry. You can study this shit at uni then get paid to do jobs in those fields! If you're thinking about going to uni but don't know what to do, why don't you study what you like and learn about how drugs and other substances interact with the brain and body, or how those drugs are made and how to make them. Just an idea for those guys out there that are thinking about an education but don't know what to do.
