Hello,
I am very worried, confused and scared!! You see, last night (at my House) my best friend overdosed on Heroin. I found him in the bathroom lying on the floor, not breathing and BLUE in the face with no pulse. I called 911 and returned to try and save his life. I live 40 minutes away from anything so I feared for the worst! I began CPR and didn't think I was doing any good. 20 minutes past and I was so tired!! I was just about to pass out myself (from the workout of cpr) when I started to get a breath or two from him. During all of this his heart stopped three different times and the first time for a minute!! Anyway, seeing that he was finally responding some, I spashed cold water on his face, after that he jerked awake and asked what had happened. I was so grateful to see him alive!!! I told him what he had done and that the ambulance was on its way. I told him to get rid of the drugs or whatever and I assumed that he did. He was so MAD!! He, never thanked me or nothing and said that he was just sleeping!! I called 911 back and tried to cancel but they would not. The police came and arrested him after the EMT's checked him out. They charged him with possesion of heroin from the dirty needle in his pocket. I feel TERRIBLE!! Should I feel bad or not?? 8o

no. you should feel great. you saved his life. what is a small police charge compared to the life of a friend.

always, always get help when OD is around you. especially heroin. would you rather be dead, or alive and have a court date, maybe a fine?

and the only reason he got charged is having the dirty needle on him after you told him to get rid of the shit..... Not only did you save his life, you also gave him a heads up to get rid of the crap... His fault for Oding and his fault for not losing the needle

I just feel so BAD!! That he is in Jail...He can be mad at me all he wants, at least he is alive, and my house won't be "Haunted"...............for real.

Dude dont feel bad at all you completly did the right thing no matter how mad he is at you you saved his life!!!! He should be thanking you but some people are not so smart and dont realize the importance of what you have done.

Wow. I just lost my second very close friend to heroin nearly 3 weeks ago. It is really nothing to fuck with.
The first died in October 2006. Our other friend was with her, found her, got scared, and instead of trying to help her, she ditched her. Very cowardly. We all resent her for it.

He most likely would've died. If he can't understand that, then he's moron. You're a good friend.

he will think about it and know u did the right thing while hes sitting in jail ..

i mean if he wasn't breathing and was turning blue ...that isn't sleeping... u need to explain to him that he stopped breathing multiple times ...what did the ambulance say

when the emt's got there he was sitting up on my couch. They took his bp and it was very high, and he had a pulse of 180 bpm. His o2 sat was at 91% and they put on a o2 mask for a while. Oh, and his blood sugar was low to. Basically, the cops and emt said that he was lucky to be alive and he would have never made it without me.

Well theres no question you did the right thing. I mean better to be in jail then in the ground right? Atleast you get released from jail kinda hard to get released from a casket.

Basically, the cops and emt said that he was lucky to be alive and he would have never made it without me.

Well, there you have it man. You absolutely, 100%, without a doubt did the right thing, and your friend should be eternally grateful to you for it <3

that reminds of the stories of people waking up from an od trying to fight the emt's cause they were narcan'd and are going into immediate withdrawal.. you saved the guys life, and warned him to get rid of the needle, he didn't take that advice so he got arrested, not your fault at all. you are the hero., your friend owes his life to you

I have to echo the other posters here, you did the right thing, and even though your friend is angry at you for it, you still did the right thing.

If you hadn't called 911 he would have died, that's all there is to it. Yeah, he got arrested and all that, but at least he's still alive.

I'm also posting here to echo the other replies: you did the right thing, even if you feel bad, know that you saved his life. You DID give him the warning of "get rid of everything" and he didn't, or he wouldn't have been arrested. While I don't feel arresting someone in that situation is ever right, since that discourages people from calling 911, we unfortunately can't change US laws. Essentially, you saved his life, and even if he's pissed at you for it right now, maybe sitting in a jail cell is what he needs --- some time to think and get his priorities in order. I also agree with PA that you can get released from jail, but not a casket.

And seriously, don't let that discourage you from calling in the future, if more people were like you there would be a lot more people alive after a heroin OD.

Hey!
Good Morning fellow bluelighters! After being awake for 3 days (insomnia from seeing my bf OD'ed face in my mind) I finally got some sleep. I feel horrible though, cause I woke up with a COLD!! I bet that I got the cold from giving my buddy CPR!! LOL!! He had one. Thank you all so much for the encouragement. It is so nice to know that I did the right thing. I do have a new "problem" however, now after he Overdosed I am so SCARED to do any dope!! I went into a panic attack last night from doing a shot!! Then I did a shot this AM and I didn't freak but my heart started racing pretty fast. Before he overdosed, I was so careless in my use. I would do shots back to back!! I don't know whats going on with me!! Well anyway, so for bitching!!
PEACE

Lesson one - agree on the rules before hand with your drug buddies. My rule back when would have been NEVER CALL 911 NO MATTER WHAT. Leave me or try and help, but no authorities.

In the absence of such an agreement though, you absolutely did the right thing.

This agreement really doesn't mean shit, and suggesting that anyone even have something like that is not harm reduction advice. If your "never call 911" rule means a friend has to decide whether or not you die, that's pretty selfish --- I would break that rule in a heartbeat and call 911 regardless, to be honest, as would almost anyone here. Also, is ending up dead really better than cops showing up? From reading around on BL, it seems that there isn't always an arrest made even when the cops do show up, seems to depend on location.

I don't want to derail the thread into legal semantics but in some jurisdictions you could even be charged for not doing what a reasonable person would have done to save their life. This definitely includes calling for help or emergency services and not just performing CPR if you know it.
