I'm travelling to the americas this year. Salvia is legal in the US, and Ayahuasca is a drug used in shaman ceremonies by Indigenous people in some countries in South America. It is also legal.

I was wondering if anyone has any experiences with either drug, and if they could give positives and negatives of either as well as some harm minimisation advice.

I am experienced with LSD and Mushrooms. I also have a little experience with DMT (smoked) and have had a break through experience. As DMT is the main active ingredient in Ayahuasca, is the experience similiar to smoking it?

Ahhhhhhhhhhh finally a person of my own heart!

Salvia, I have used, I wont elaborate here, but was an awful experience. One I would like to forget... However, Ayahuasca (the proper and traditional brew), is an amazing one.

The first time I tried it was when I was in, funnily enough, South America. I was with three of my very good friends, and we were staying at a retreat called The Ayahuasca Foundation and actually stayed in Don Luchos camp... I had never experienced anything like this before. I wont go on about the accommodation etc... it's pointless here.

The evening I drank the brew went like this. I was sitting around with a group of people, my mates and me. It was pitch black. The Shaman (Curandeo), began singing, kind of chanting these words and songs, while blowing tobacco over our heads. We were all given a cup of the most disgusting drink in the world. It was actually passed around, we didn't have individual cups. It was like a hollowed out nut from a tree. I drank it.

Within minutes I was feeling nausea's, and couldn't stay still. Anxiety swept over me as I couldn't see anything, but then I had to purge (vomit). I lent over the rail and kept going for I think around 2 hours, I couldn't tell. Finally, I began to see things. Beautiful things. I saw a beautiful female emerge from this snake that turned into a vine, and she sat with me, looking at me and speaking to me through her thoughts. This felt like it was forever, but I am sure it was only a few minutes, I felt like she was giving me answers to my problems, (which by the way I fixed on return to Australia). This lady I was told by the shaman was in fact "Ayahuasca". When she had finished her subconscious discussion with me, she wove back into the vine, and the vine seemed to turn into a purple and pink spark like thing and vanish into the air. I couldn't move, I just sat their breathing. I saw amazing fractals, animals, birds, water, things I never imagined I could see in my life. It went on like this till the sun started coming up, when this happened, i crawled over to my mat (I was sitting there for 5 hours, not moving, just smiling according to the video camera my mate had lol), and went to sleep. When I awoke, I felt enlightened and changed. I did this every night for 3 weeks (along with San Pedro ceremonies)...

I plan on going back this year with some new friends, to share the experience with them.

I have to say, make sure you are on NO SSRIs or SNRIs prior to drinking. If you are, go see a doctor and get off them. Also, don't drink any alcohol, or eat any meat for a month prior to the experience, trust me, these things are a must for a full blown, authentic experience.

Mate, I'm jealous! I was just listening to the vocal mix of Tierra Azul which took me back to the psychedelic carnival in the sky... and prompted me to come on here =D

Thanks for the write up, lots of good info there.

What country did you have your ayahuasca experience in? I'm definately going to be in the Amazon in both Colombia and Peru (probably more time spent in Peru) and maybe Bolivia also.

Also, did you find the experience to be alot more profound than smoking DMT?

Why is it important not to eat meat or drink alcohol a month before? Both might be a bit tricky for me as I eat alot of meat in general, and will be on holiday so will probably be drinking alot. However, I am happy to abstain for a shortwhile before, but is a month really necessary?

Great write up, AS13. Sounds like a hell of an experience. :)

I don't get the meat and alcohol bit either. From a spiritual view point perhaps, definitely not a pharmacological one.

Hey psytaco. The experience was in Iquitos, Peru, near a little village called Manacamiri.

This area of the world is incredible, and I urge everyone who has interest in expanding their consciousness to visit, at least once. Having a small child now, will not allow me to visit as much as I'd like, I would ultimately LOVE to live there. It is a truly amazing area.

DMT and Ayahuasca, is (to me), totally different. DMT is a more fast experience, where you have a journey, if you will, which lasts around 20 minutes before coming too. Some of the DMT trips I experiences in Peru, were incredible though. Make sure you go with the right people, there are a lot of scammers wandering around.

NOW to the no meat or alcohol questions (by both yourself and Mr. Blonde). It IS purely a spiritual reason. I feel that is one is to experience a TRADITIONAL ceremony, abstaining from both meat and alcohol (or anything intoxicating), will heightens ones experience with lady Ayahuasca. Perhaps take 2 to 3 days off from meat and grog, this will give you a different experience spiritually. So no... not necessary, just something I believe is good if you want a true experience.

Any other questions, feel free to ask. Anything relating to Ayahuasca, San Pedro, Cannabis ( a little different, but I am currently investigating and researching certain strains) or DMT, I am happy to comment on.

Peace.

Medically speaking, foods that contain tyramine should be avoided as this could theoretically lead to serotonin syndrome due to interactions with MAOIss, but this is based upon evidence derived from literature regarding pharmaceutically produced MAOIs. See http://www.ayahuasca.com/science/what-foods-and-drugs-need-to-be-avoided/ for a comprehensive list of (possible) food/drug interactions to be avoided. As AyahuascaSeeker13 pointed out, these are more spiritual precautions than medical ones, much like the abstinence from orgasm (also part of the diet) "facilitates" the entering of "higher realms".

^^^^ Good link, I just glanced over it then.

ALSO... Important: Avoid St John Wort and Ephedra for at least a month. I stopped taking these two "supplements" 2 months before my trip.

Lay off any narcotics for a couple of weeks too, cocaine can have ill effects with the ayahuasca brew (as one of my close friends recently experienced in Peru first hand). He was very close to cardiac arrest for some reason.

All the tips regarding tyrosine and certain drugs are correct. An ayhuasca brew should contain a reversible MAOI, depending on what component is used for the MAOI you can look up what is the major compound and estimate the half-life. A few days either side of a reversible MAOI should be enough.

That psychedelic carnival in the sky. Sounds fun, I am looking forward to finding out if ayahuasca will give such a ridiculous and fun experience or something more profound and spiritual. I wonder if they have a shop selling nangs in the Amazon;)

It will probably be both of these. I'm not a "spiritual" person at all, and yet I struggle to find another adjective to explain the experience. I'm interested in languages, semiotics and the relationship between language and reality; a lot of my experiences seemed to be "delivered" within this framework. From my experience, there seems to be a somewhat "objective" shared space that everyone enters and a deeper more personal level that relates entirely to the voyager's personal philosophy.

^^ now that is what I call a combo.

Break though DMT either during a salvia breakthrough or vice versa. I have never experiened either, but have smoked DMT and would love a breakthrough experience anyways, but..... imagine combination of both simutaneously?????

maybe we start a new thread on that? cause I would love to hear some experiences...

^^ well I agree but you never know it could be like candyflipping and whole new amazing drug when combined..

Can you imagine if they marrige like LSD and MDMA????

WHOAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Salvia and DMT combined! Seriously, there is definitely no need for that. You will find (if you do this), you shouldn't have.

Speaking from personal experience, this is a stupid idea, and if you are currently living without regret, you soon will be.

If you do it be careful, and have someone you trust SOBER with you.

SpiritFolk: PLEASE DON'T REFER TO THIS AS "LIKE CANDYFLIPPING"! That is honestly the worst immature child like term ever invented. Keep your slang for the pillreports forums.

^^ I only use the term "candyflipping" as reference as most people call the combination of LSD and MDMA "candyflipping" and will know of it to be a combination that is a marrige made in heaven so to speak.

So I would hardly call that immature.

Anyways as you have not stated that you have combined Saliva and DMT at the same time personally, so then I find your condemnation of the idea of actually doing it... ridiculous.

How do you know you might not have serious breakthough on a deeper level then once experiened? You only know what you might think will happen.
