how's it goin?

so. here's the story.

i'm an american BL'er, and over the past few years, especially the past few months, i've been getting more and more fed up about the decisions that our gov't is making, especially foreign policy-related decisions. we're getting progressively more and more censored here, we're committing more and more attrocities, and we're violating more and more human rights.

i just can't get behind that. i mean, in all reality, every can of soda that i buy, i pay taxes to support the american government, and my guilt is overwhelming.

so! i've decided that instead of continuing my passive lifetime dream of "someday" moving out of the country, i'm going to ACTIVELY attempt to move away from here. basically, i'm the opposite of "proud to be an american".

now, trying to be realistic, i understand that it's not the easiest thing in the world to immigrate. also, i'm a big fan of drugs. i'm going to need some friends wherever i go with ... similar interests. i immediately thought of bluelight!

so, fellow bluelighters. any amazing ideas? i've pretty much decided to change my major to journalism, because i think that the internet has created a completely different environment for journalism, and opened up a lot of opportunities. so i'd like to (ideally) begin attending journalism school. but more than anything, i'd like to go to journalism school ANYWHERE (within reason) but here. there's currently a crisis in american journalism, and that's something i'd like to eventually be able to affect, once i get through journalism school, because average americans arent made aware of the same things that are going on globally, or even in our own country, that the rest of the free world is. this is something that really gets to me, and i feel like we would be a different country if the people here were aware of what was actually going on.

ANYwho, that's a little bit about me. anybody wanna get married? hah. seriously though, i AM actually considering that as an easier option, since i'm not a skilled scientist or doctor or something. but i'd really appreciate your guys' help on this, being citizens of one of the places i'd really like to immigrate to, if i'm choosing. BL is a really great global community, and i feel like (for some bizarre reason - call me crazy) i can trust your opinions on serious things.

so, whaddaya think?

You don't think we pay taxes to a jerk off Government here?

Why don't you stay in America and work as a journalist with integrity and get things out there that you feel strongly about?

I'm not saying you shouldn't move away from America but if your problem is paying taxes to a Government you don't like Australia is the wrong fucking place to come.

no, no i don't mind paying taxes, in fact, i think we should raise taxes here. lowering taxes (especially lowering taxes for the wealthy like obama just did) isn't going to fix our economy. i just feel like the things that america, the government that i'm supposed to be proud of, is doing... well i dunno how to explain it in a short kind of way, but over the past few years, i've just been getting more and more fed up. i mean, for instance: supporting israel, the bradley manning situation, attempting to charge julian assange for espionage (espionage is actually unconstitutional BTW, the last person we convicted and executed for it was actually innocent - lovely, no?), subpoenaing an icelandic MP's twitter account, guantanamo bay, the "war on terror", the numerous human rights violations, the censorship of anyone who is in the military or works in the gov't from reading or seeing anything that has any info from wikileaks (ie: the guardian, the new york times, etc...), propping up dictators around the world...

my issue with the US isn't paying taxes, it's supporting the US monetarily. it's supporting the US in ANY way. i just dont feel right knowing that the country i live in is just so damn evil. i mean, i know that almost every country does some evil things, but mine is really over the top. i feel like i've gotta get out, and i think there are ways that i can help the journalism/media situation without having to reside here. i've tried activism, i've tried lobbying my representatives, and i think we're at the point here where i, one un-noteworthy citizen literally cannot make a difference. i feel like the US is a snowball rolling down a hill, and we're already about 1/3 of the way down. if i try to stop us from rolling further, i'm only going to get covered with snow and stuck between the layers. the snowball's gonna end up bigger and eviler at the bottom of the hill with or without me stuck inside, and i'd rather not be stuck inside.

Australia incarcerates refugees indefinitely, and is even trying to negotiate deals so they're dealt with offshore and don't even get here. Our Prime Minister has also slandered Julian Assange (an Australian citizen) and had the Federal Police investigate whether he could be prosecuted under Australian law. The previous Government supported both the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and sent our troops to help (/die). Our arguably best PM for domestic policy pretty much gave Indonesia the green light to annex East Timor and resulted in 25 years of the brutal rape and murder of many of the population and >100 000 deaths.

I don't think you're granted automatic Australian citizenship if you marry a citizen, unlike many countries. Also if you're planning on attending university you'll be paying through the nose as an internationally student. I believe.

My Dad married a Vietnamese lass in Vietnam.

She had to to taken a citizenship test here not long after they moved back here.

Was that after the Vietnam war? I think they made things a bit easier for soldiers that married abroad though I could be talking out my ass.

umm
my dads australian and she wasnt a soldier this only happened 4 or 5 yrs ago.

Really? Wow. I have been up a long time. I mean, what kind of questions? I bet most Australians wouldn't get them all.

Any Australian would need to study up for sure.

There was shit in there I had forgotten completely/did not know altogether.

Guy has picked the wrong country imo, should go to Asia. All the girls their love marrying foreigners. and they love you long time too.

Yeh Australia's stance on gay marriage is still grounded firmly in the last century. A lot of our policies are very conservative. On the other hand, if the OP's female... you offering any $$ incentive for a potential Aussie husband lovelyavacado? ;) :D
