Random MSN Gibberings LIV: teh polis are watching us!

I can´t beleive there are people on this board who have never heard Stone Roses or Happy Mondays. Stone Roses are obviously FAR FAR FAR superior though. The debut album is one of the best albums ever and the follow up isn´t too bad either.

My favourite track without a doubt is What The World Is Waiting For. Fucking epic.

It's not a question of one being better than the other Mr spade.
At the time it didn't matter what was playing the Mondays, the Roses, the inspirals,James, the Fall, the verve or whatever, Manchester was the centre of the universe showing everyone the way.
It was a good time :)

James? :|

I could never listen to the Inspirals either, not on drugs. Too doom and gloom. Did see them at Brixton though and they were fun live.

And you put a 'The' in front of Verve. That matters. 'The' Verve were shite. Verve (pre-the) were fucking excellent, nine or ten songs to match anything the Roses and the Mondays did.

I always liked the Inspirals but not music for MDMA/tripping. Good party tunes with a few drinks and spliffs though. James were shit. Am not that big on either form of The Verve but the The version is definitely the better of the two by far. Probably my worst guilty pleasure from that era would be this. I actually really quite liked that album at the time :D

Ha ha Shammy! I feel no guilt. I always liked that song. But then I'm a big beatles fan and loved that song anyway.

I only heard the Candy Flip Version for the first time 4 years ago.

Edit: LOL SHM! It fucking is! Except he was like 2 at the time. Maybe that's codders daddy.

That does look remarkably like Codders!

I've got the dentist in 4 hours and frankly, I AM SHITTING MYSELF! Mostly as I'm dreading being told the extent of my damage. At least I'll have time to prepare myself with Valium for when the work is carried out.

I think you're right. Only just though. Maybe that was the year he was born. I always get his age one or two years off.

I had to look up when that song was release ha ha.

this. I actually really quite liked that album at the time :D

That's not a guilty pleasure that's proper ecstasy. There are several looks on his face that only come from clean clean MDMA. At 53 secs he does a little gasp - sooooo reminiscent of good times.

He does look spookily like Codshit. And I have to say that's exactly how I dance on drugs when I'm at home. Don't we all?

Another classic Shammy. Adding to Polyphonic Spree playlist as we speak. :)

Glad to be of service, SHM :)

I said it was a guilty pleasure cos they were very much a minor Manc band and seen as a bit of a joke at the time - one-hit wonders kinda thing. Must admit listening to it again there it stands up much better than I'd expected.

You also just reminded me that a bit of a Spree is in order - Polyphonic Spree - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - to stick to the Beatles cover theme :)

Still gotta be Lithium ftw though <3

Haha, I like Polyphonic Spree even though I should hate them, just something strangely good about them. I think it's the crazy cult look that makes them better than they are.

I don't get this whole "Verve" vs "The Verve" thing. I'd never even noticed that the name had slightly changed until seeing people mention it on the internet. When did it change? What albums were Verve & what ones were The Verve. Also, is this a real thing or just folk on the internet getting too worked up because they'd added a The to the title probably without even thinking about it, have the band ever even confirmed that this was a conscious decision?

They had to add 'The' (they were just 'Verve' before this) because of legal problems (there's a famous jazz label called Verve, they complained)

The change coincided with two things.

1) Fame. As Verve they played to 6 men and a dog. I know, I was there, several times. It was my dog. As The Verve they rocketed to stardom. With a lot of help from Noel.

2) A change of tune, literally. Ashcroft got all serious about music, even to the point of slagging off early Verve stuff for being 'unprofessionally druggie' (ie 'it never made me any money'), and consequently started making the dire commercial shite (also known as 'profitable') most people like them for.

Early Verve were the best thing ever.

EDIT 'Verve' only released A Storm In Heaven on LP but had 3 or 4 shit hot EP-type singles with 9 minute drug tracks called things like High and Man Called Sun.

'The Verve' was the rest of the shit.

There you go. Every day's a school day. I don't know if I've even heard much Verve stuff then. I got into The Verve the same time I was listening to Oasis, Ocean Colour Scene, Cast etc. Gonna download some now.

SHM, you seem into this kind of music. I'm getting abuse from a couple of my mates because I was slagging them for even considering traveling to Newcastle to see Beady Eye (Liam's band lol). What do you think of Liam Gallagher, Beady Eye, late Oasis?? I think the cunt needs to fuck off inside his house with a big pile of ching & play his wee tunes to himself, never exposing the shitness to the rest of the world.

I was right into Oasis at one point as well lol, I was in my early to mid-teens though.

Didn't know Liam had his own band. Christ they must be godawful. Oasis were great right up till the second album. Went downhill rapidly from then on...

Also, correction to my statement above - it's the sans The form of the Verve I don't object to. The Bittersweet Symphony album was okay for a few listens and then I realised it was pretty crap. And as for his solo stuff :|

That's pretty much what I think.

Plus exactly what Shammy says below.

I agree with the Shambles statement on Oasis as well. Definitely Maybe is still a quality album. Columbia will always be one of my favourite tunes. First heard that on white label or something when I was a wee guy, before the album ever came out. My dad came charging in, turned off my happy hardcore tunes & made me listen to this new band he'd heard of called Oasis. He loved them because they were basically a rip-off of all his favourite old bands lol & was adamant that they would be massive. Thought he was talking shite at the time... (loved the tune though)

With regards to their later stuff, Gas Panic is a cracking tune. Too bad about the rest.

*Fires up iTunes & puts Columbia on %)*
