Opiates + Sleeping

I was curious if anyone has similar experiences as me. When I take opiates I actually find it quite difficult to sleep (getting and staying asleep) and even the next day I feel like I haven't had a decent nights sleep. I understand that opiates are depressants and quite often I nod, just can't get a satisfactory sleep. Maybe I am one of the few to experience paradoxical effects? But it's curious since I still feel sleepy and can have a wicked nod. :\

Thoughts? Ideas? Anyone else?
 
Yes the first year of the opiate addiction sleeping was weird...I would hear weird voices when I was falling asleep and could hardly get any REM sleep..just that stage whenever you are out, but still could wake up if you heard a car horn far away outside.

Errr, actually yeh, same. 8o My fan talks to me - not literally, but when its on and I'm trying to sleep it does sound like voices. Maybe it's time for me to slow up my opiate use for a while then. :|
 
Usually if I'm tired and take an opiate ill be up until Im coming off the opiate, be it demerol, hydrocodone, oxymorphone, morphine etc. Seemingly more sedating opiates keep me just as awake as more stimulating ones such as oxycodone
 
I did do some Google'ing and others have also experienced this. What I'm after if possible would be the pharamcodynamics of opiates in relation to sleep.

If I can't get an answer on here next time I see my doctor mates I'll ask them for this thread too (in case someone else stumbles across this :) ).
 
Yeah it comes with the game for awhile....you either get off of them or it becomes a lifetime battle. I've gone 4 months without any(worst 4 months of my life) and my pain levels became unbearable so I got back on. I slept like a baby when I was off of them though. If you stay on them, the sleeping issue kind of works itself out......that or you become so used to the feeling that you learn how to fall asleep.
 
Ah tbh I don't use enough (don't have a regular supplier anyhow) for an addiction to form. The voices thing I only just noticed last night since you mentioned it.
 
Happens to me almost every night. Something about being on opiates + in the dark + by yourself...like all the sudden the ghosts decide its time to fuck with you lol.
 
Yea at first when on opiates sleep felt as if I Basicly layed down and pretty much woke up an hour or two later but it would be morning.. I wouldn't really feel tired the next day from it.
But like someone mentioned I think i wasnt gettin the REM sleep like i usually would if I were to goto sleep not on opiates...

But now 3 years of abuse... I can't sl3ep without them. Vicious cycle. Lol

When I first really got into opiates it was PPT and I would stay up as late as I possibly could usually and goto bed when I knew I only had 5-6 hours of sleep before I would Have to get up for work...

Needless to say after my addiction started to become several nights of the week I was barely getting any sleep during the work week. And eventually got fired for being late so much because I stayed up to late and was often late to work...

Now I sleep Like a baby...(as long as there's opiates :/ )

Hypnagogia is very common during opioid-induced somnolence (nodding).

No one's debating this! =S lol.

Skyline's comment was in reference to little voices and my point was that I don't actually "sleep" while on opiates.
 
In my past experience Oxycodone and hydrocodone both gave me a slightly 'stimulating' opiate high, and while I would still be able to reach nod-land, it wouldn't make me tired to the point of passing out and getting a solid sleep. They would make me motivated to get work done many times as well.

On the other hand, once I started shooting dope and dilaudid, I would sleep like a fucking baby after the initial high would wear off. Also once I started MMT I would sleep for like 12 straight hours haha. Now i am stable on 75mg of 'done, but my insomnia has come back hardcore these past couple months. Benzos in combination with a sedating opiate used to give me the most undisturbed sleep.
 
I've found that if you use right before you go to bed you'll have a harder time sleeping. When I used heroin I would smoke in bed, then nod off but never really sleep. Around year 3 of my heroin addiction I stopped using a couple hours before I was ready to go to bed and found I'd never slept better.
 
The heavier opiates certainly make me sleep like a baby, hydromorphone and morphine being the best, methadone as well. Oxycodone isn't exactly stimulating but it certainly keeps me awake unless I take a benzo or antihistamine with it.

Hydrocodone is a nice middle ground, but add some diphenhydramine and say hello to The Nod. :)

I have to agree with this. Dosing in the morning is very enjoyable.
 
There is no way that I could ever fall asleep after taking oxycodone. It's too stimulating, and, in my experience, is the most likely candidate to induce itching.

I have never tried to sleep after taking hydrocodone, but I would imagine that I can fall asleep on either hydrocodone or oxymorphone.

But again, as someone has already said, sleeping after taking an opiate is a waste.

Im no expert but i have been using opiates 4 a while now and i guess it could be dose related. Because like you say opiates are cns depressants but they are also at certin doses as im sure your aware mood elovating.In which case its the perked up mood sort off thing energetic and lively feeling that could be 1 explanation 4 it .so i would hazzard a guess its definetly dose related. Ive suffered the similar sort of thing more than once hope this helped.:)
 
What opiate is the OP on? I find drugs like morphine to give me a wonderful comfy sedation which is ideal for sleep. On the other hand opium, which contains morphine among other things can be so pleasant that sleep just doesn't seems neccesary.
