Just came across this article posted on the Herald Sun website. I shouldn't be surprised by Australian media hyperbole anymore as it has become the norm, however i thought fellow BL's may be interested in the article.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/vi...ls-of-drug-abuse/story-e6frf7kx-1225978231469

NEW Year's festival fans are bragging they will carry a "carload of drugs" into weekend events as police admit they're powerless to stem the illicit tide.

Fears have risen over the emergence on the party scene of super-strong MDMA capsules, which can spark anxiety, paranoia and aggression.

Police are planning surprise operations at music festivals involving sniffer dogs and undercover officers. But Supt Paul Pottage said it was difficult to assess how many people carrying drugs slipped through undetected.

The Herald Sun found:

DRUGS are being secretly sold from tents at some festivals.

YOUTHS are spending up to $350 on drugs for days of partying.

DRUG-USERS are routinely smuggling narcotics into events without fear of security or police.

REVELLERS expect 90 per cent of those at some festivals will take drugs.

Supt Pottage said sniffer dogs were effective at detecting narcotics, and had recently been trained to detect deadly drug GHB.

But they would not be at all events, and though they screen patrons on their way in, they are not used inside.

"It (drug use) is something that has just become part of the dance scene landscape," Supt Pottage said.

"It's certainly prevalent. We would hope to think we get a reasonable percentage of people going in carrying drugs.
"The message is, it's not the way to go."

Supt Pottage said while the large commercial events had good security and first aid, many smaller private events were poorly organised.

"We'll get anywhere between 40 and 60 (offenders) at any event, which has been steady since 2005. Just as routinely we will get three of four traffickers," he said.

Police patrolling Winter Sound System detected a teenager with 700 to 800 ecstasy pills.

Falls Festival director Simon Daly said though there were no searches for drugs, medical staff rarely encountered people suffering drug-related problems.

Pyramid Rock publicist Steven Stavrakis said there was a strong police presence.

Prof Dan Lubman, of Turning Point Drug and Alcohol Centre, said people taking drugs in groups often wrongly believed there was no harm. They should look out for mates.

The sentence highlighted by italics was an edit of mine not the HS. This statement is inaccurate in far to many ways.

First, the lack of mdma in Aus let alone Melb. How can fears arise about something that is beyond ridiculously scarce?
Secondly, the 'journalist' has removed any little credibility they may have possessed by stating that mdma causes 'aggression'.

I could rant in much more depth and detail, however i am ready for bed, and feel that continuing to rant may also make you feel sleepy.

I will end by saying the most irritating thing I find about this article is that Jack and Jill Smith will read this over breakfast in the morning and accept it as gospel. If only Wikileaks could leak that 'revenue trumps truth in media world', then maybe mainstream society wouldn't believe half the worthless, unsubstantiated drivel published by our media organisations.

One thing that interest me is how they claim to have trained dogs to sniff for GHB. Would this just be Na-GHB, K-GHB, GBL, 14,b, a mixture or all of them?

It seems to me of the 4 forms of GHB it wouldnt exactly be cost effective to train each dog to sniff for them all, especially if they expected the dog to be able to pick up on pills as well.

One would think the form they trained for commonly was 1,4b, as it seems this is most common form in Australia. It will be interesting to see if sniffer dogs abilities cause a shift in the primary form(s) that GHB is commonly available in in Australia.

I have to say there seems to be much more 1,4 and GBL around than GHB. Having never encountered GHB myself (but both 1,4 and GBL) I can only speculate, but it seems to have a much less conspicuous taste than its alternatives. This being the case it could be possible dogs would have a harder time smelling GHB than 1,4 or GBL and we may see a shift in the market towards actual GHB being the commonly available product.

Sensational journalism is something one should expect from the herald sun.

However this article is also stating what is known to pretty much anyone who has attended a music festival in the last 10-20 years. Drugs are widely used at these festivals, in most cases they are easy to buy, and you can take them without fear of getting in trouble (with the exception of the events with sniffer dogs).

I wish the herald sun would employ me, I would be happy to get paid for 'investigative' journalism which is common knowledge.

"super-strong MDMA capsules, which can spark anxiety, paranoia and aggression."

really? Aggression? FFFFFFuuu...

I am guessing that Ashley Argoon and Anthony Dowsley must have the combined IQ of a house brick for writing that MDMA causes aggression.

I feel dumber having read that article.

Here's to hoping that these supposed MDMA caps are real and abundant!

Sensationalist, even for a News Limited paper.

Anecdotal "claims" by revellers that 90 per cent of people at some of these festivals will be on drugs does nothing more than fuel the fires for that part of the mainstream who already believe such things about music festivals and young people in general.

Haha, reading Herald Sun articles (or pretty much any newspaper article) on drugs always reminds me of the scene from Billy Madison..

"Herald Sun, what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul."

super strong mdma caps at a festival.... wtf, its australia!!! if there is mdma you aint gona find it in a festival hahaha.
had to laugh at the agression comment also what a joke. haha, worst thing at festivals are police officers.. but then or agen we need em to stop the damage cause by the alcohol and dodgy drugs. certainly not super strong mdma capsules, if they exsist kick the police out and give me an invite :)

lol that article was painfuly funny..
not being direspectful to the 18 ad 19 year olds out there but Society hates you..
Your plain bad luck for not being able to experience MDMA has made you believe the shit you eat today is ecstasy..
mdma caps.. if mdma was readily available today it be at inflated prices only the rich can obtain..
aggression on mdma..
comeon guys its the sun..
they have to be naive in their view on DRUGS!!

The most pressing issue is...WHERE THE FUCK ARE THESE SUPER STRONG MDMA CAPS? I HAVE AN ARM AND A LEG TO GIVE UP FOR A FISTFUL OF THOSE CAPS!

The aggression comes after you've realised your ripped-off!

Also D-M I reckon the cops could train their dogs to sniff anything as they would have it all at their disposal being as involved as they are right down the line <_<

I love paying to go to a festival, then paying more money for drugs which make me feel anxious, paranoid and aggressive! What an awesome time!

People actually think drug users pay money to have a crap time. Scary. I guess it's what I thought in early high school too.

Oh, and Romie1092... I'm so not surprised... They're from Shepparton they've probably never seen 'a drug' in their life. All drugs are heroin aren't they? Funnily enough, I think there's a bit of a drug problem in Shepparton.

I remember the red Mitzi's that were getting around sydney about 8 years ago. I think the herald sun article went something like "super potent 3x as strong!" I clipped out the article and put it in a birthday card along with one of these evil little fuckers for my mates birthday.he was stoked!! Haha
