If heavy drinking is seen as over 2 beers daily....
What is someone classified as who drinks 24 beers a night
Just for the record, there is no clear-cut boundary between "alcoholics" and others that can be dictated by the quantity consumed per day. When they say things such as what you said, it just means that a substantial amount of people who drink more than 2 beers every day likely have an alcohol use disorder or are heading in that direction.
There are people who come home everyday from work and have a couple drinks and its far from a problem in ANY way. They never think about drinking, it produces no social, occupational, familial, etc. problems.... but they ARE drinking 2+ drinks per day.
Then you have other people who only drink once a week or just on weekends but they get so belligerently obliterated that they waste all of their money, possibly get in fights, engage in risky sexual activities, fall down and injure themselves and when they aren't drinking they constantly think about it.
Do you really think this second person doesn't have a problem? Most people view addiction as using a substance all the time but this isn't always the case... its often part of it but addiction is more so characterized by the unhealthy relationship someone develops with a substance alongside continued use despite severe consequences (socially, academically, professionally, medically, etc)
If someone is drinking 24 beers a night though this likely indicates problematic drinking.
I'm studying addiction counseling and so while this may not belong in OD, if you'd like to discuss it further, please feel free to private message me.
