So, I have a bodybuilding friend that is about to start eating dinitrophenol. I did research and found that it is essentially a cellular poison.

What are the implications of eating something like this? I don't think he should eat and I'd like him to have as much information as possible before he starts taking it. Can anyone help out?

Nitrogenated aromatics = cellular damage a lot (if not all) of the time. 2 4 DNP works by making your cells work harder and therefore generate more heat through metabolism. Yikes! I thinka healthy diet and excercise would help a lot more.

It releases energy as heat without generating energy, hence it burns fat. But it does so in a poisonous manner. And there is the added benefit of getting cataracts....

It is a dumb move. 2,4-Dinitrophenol induces hyperthermia and ineffective cellular respiration in all tissues, not just your fat tissues, so you're putting a toxin which probably has permanently destructive effects into your eyes, brain, liver and kidneys as well.

Bodybuilders don't seem to have much of a penchant for taking the healthiest of drugs to achieve their ambitious phsyical goals.

2,4-dinitrophenol makes the amphetamines look almost innocuous by comparison.

I think that the medication is hilarious, but tragically so.
So what if people considered aerobic exercise for 2, even 1 hrs. per day? :P

ebola

This sounds like the horrible effect of today's self-image obsessions going too far.
He might not come to any immediate harm, but there is no way that this will do him any good.

It's like cutting off your nose to.... well, lose weight.

Back in the day? Man I love my strychnine! Gets me so pumped!! WRAAARWWW!! HU! HU! HU! HU!!

My old training buddy did a few cycles.. sure he's big but he looks all puffy.. He even got an "A" tattoo, referring to a bodybuilding supplement brand.. Just kill yourself already :|

you guys sound like DARE. Do you think the OP's friend is looking for advice on whether or not to take DNP?

Bodybuilder on DNP is analogous to Climber on Annapurna. Simply saying, "Get down from there: it's the deadliest mountain in the world!" is futile.

I tried to find credible experience reports for a DNP regimen but couldn't. They're mostly either "My bro died from it" or "The dangers are overexagerated: I took it and got RIPPPPD!!!"

D.A.R.E. = Dangerous And Reckless Enjoyment.

Even if death is part of the picture.

To the OP: This is rather a reckless way of burning fat. It is also burning off other less than desirable cells.

Can anyone post any studies referring to similar compounds causing toxicity? I believe all of you but I wanna point him to hard evidence.

EDIT: And sorry that I'm asking you guys to dig up stuff for me but I can't for the life of me find anything good. I mean, i don't think its very common to eat compounds like this.

There are quite a few papers on it in Pubmed when searching "2,4 Dinitrophenol weight loss".
Also searching metabolic poisons and 2,4 Dinitrophenol will bring up some more information on Yahoo. Do a little bit of looking around and you'll find what you need.
I would say its probably not a good idea.

Ingesting a semi-TNT like explosive substance to get explosive slimming results?

Man I can simply imagine the commercial.

The evidence and documentation you want can simply be found on wikipedia, check also 'nitrate' and look under nitrate toxicity on humans.
If your friend is still not convinced by the encyclopedic evidence then he is a dumb musclehead and you'll just have to wait until he gets hurt.

Why don't just use it to make firecrackers?
