At AmorRoark's suggestion....

Hate his films or love them, S-Bus is an incredibly talented actor, writer, and director and he doesn't look like anyone else in Hollywood.

Haters be damned.

I first became aware of Mr. Buscemi through his guest appearances on The Adventures of Pete & Pete and Tales from the Crypt. I honestly didn't think much of him as an actor at first, he was just interesting to look at and was sort of funny in a creepy way. The first movie I remember seeing with him in it was Pulp Fiction. My older brother was kind enough to show me Reservoir Dogs shortly after that and I came to really enjoy him in these seemingly niche roles. When I was seventeen, I worked at Blockbuster Video and was lucky enough to have two assistant managers who were both in college and film students. They forever changed my tastes in movies for the better and Mr. Buscemi certainly played a large role in that, if you don't mind my pun! Ha Ha Ha!

They told me to rent a little movie called The Big Lebowski. I was amazed. In short order, I devoured the rest of the rest of the Coen brothers filmography, and was introduced to a very different, far more interesting Steve Buscemi. Miller's Crossing and Barton Fink blew me away and if it wasn't for Mr. Buscemi impressing me so much in those films, I wouldn't have followed his career more closely and would have missed the little gem Ghost World which was an adaptation of the comic book by the same name. Ghost World also introduced by to a young Scarlett Johansson and for that I am eternally grateful, Steve. Ha Ha Ha!

I will have to continue my appreciation of this fine actor later and feel like I've merely scratched the surface of the complexities of this man but I want to offer up the floor to anyone else who is crazy about S-Bus as I am!

I like the guy and agree that he is a great actor, but he's still got that creepy pedo look going on in his older age.

Ebow - Is this going to turn into 40 pages of Buscemi pics? ;)

And yes, Barton Fink is one my all time favourite movies.

BTW, I had not heard of Boardwalk empire until now. After a little sleuthing I think I need to see this Series.

I wish we got HBO releases at the same time as you guys Stateside. I <3 HBO. :)

lostNfound, when you do get a chance, you must check out Boardwalk Empire! I am sure I am not the only fan of Mr. Buscemi that is thrilled to see him get the chance to shine as a leading man. The pacing is intentionally slow at first because there are a slew of plotlines that need to be set up and they sprawl over three cities. I know a fair number of people who don't care for the series. Whether it's from lack of vampires, no Mormon symbolism, or a caliber of acting that is above and beyond their understanding, I don't know.

From our interactions on the board, I'd have to wager you will like the series and this will raise your esteem of Mr. Buscemi. I find it interesting that his aesthetic is not all that out of place in this show. The 1920s were surely hard on the health and body and a lot of the cast reflects that. He is certainly not going to be considered handsome by today's standard but his character carries himself a way that helps him exudes confidence and intelligence. In my opinion, it helps to temper any previous thoughts about him looking 'strange'. Now, though he still doesn't look like anyone else in Hollywood, I find that he's more "normal looking" -- like the rest of us.

I think I'm in agreeance I've been reading reviews etc for the last 20 minutes about it.
I've just ordered a copy of the paperback as well =D
1920s America is one of my favourite eras and to see Scorcese have a hand in this got me a little bet wet in my pants.
I'm also interested in seeing how Buscemi will go with a leading role in a series.

Deadwood was slow and I was a fan of that for all three seasons. slow is good if the quality is there.

I also think you may be right that the worn & weathered look he has will portray the people of the time a little more accurately than otherwise.

hey! I'm happy to see someone else remembers Steve Buscemi's piece on my childhood favorite, the Tales From the Crypt. he actually put it in a solid performance, right alongside another great performance from Roger Daltrey of the Who

and then he was probably the most interesting character in one of my most coveted movies ever - Reservoir Dogs

pretty much anything he's been in I love. I like to think he's beaten Hollywood, too, since he doesn't quite have the usual bland good looks, but actually utilizes his acting chops

I'm happy for him that he finally scored a lead on the Boardwalk Empire, though I haven't seen a single episode yet

It certainly is an interesting period of this country's history, I agree. The Deadwood comparison is accurate, my friend. Boardwalk actually is quite similar in that it spends a lot of its time doing character studies early on to really make an impact later on when things are finally set in motion. But back to the point of this thread: Mr. Buscemi.

This is taken from a scene from the first episode and I think it illustrates my point about his aesthetic seeming tempered:

This is from a different episode where he is with another fine actor, Michael Pitt, who surely is considered more traditionally handsome. However, Mr. Buscemi still looks rather normal in his presence:

And here is a recent shot from some event or another. I think as the years have gone he's developed the look of a distinguished gentleman:

Yup - Buscemi is awersum. I *thought* that Res Dogs was the first thing I saw him in, but I was a huge Tales from the Crypt fan back in the day, so I may have seen him on that first. Somebody humor me with the general plot from that episode?

Ghost World was decent - but I have to admit I like Buscemi in more psycho roles. Thankfully the 4 real stars of that movie kept me watching. (.)(.) (.)(.) ;)

^^ That animation/picture of Steve with a gun and a hand covered in blood, kicking a body - whats that from??

Thanks for the suggestions on Boardwalk Empire (never heard of it) and Barton Fink (don't `fink` I've seen it.)

I believe it was the second to the last season, entitled Forever Ambergris. Steve Buscemi is an up-and-coming photographer who is in love with a total babe, and she loves him back, and he is a very sweet and swell kinda guy

he gets to meet his photog idol, Roger Daltrey of the Who, who looks like an 80s renegade and is quite an asshole. Daltrey's career is on the downturn, as people say he doesn't quite have it in him anymore

the two finally meet, and they are both sent to a war together (I forget which one). Daltrey knows of this area, full of dead soldiers, that would be a perfect scenario for some gruesome classic war shots. he delightfully sends Steve Buscemi on his way there, but problem is whoever goes into this restricted area gets a disease where their body slowly starts to fall apart... Buscemi dies but not before sending his wife a sample to get sick and get back at Roger Daltrey

Daltey inevitably goes back to tell Buscemi's wife the bad news, and tries to fuck her. the wife seems willing, but not before putting that deadly aforementioned sample in a joint that the two smoke. they both die slowly, and Buscemi gets his post-par tum revenge

this is all from memory, so there might be some slight inaccuracies. yes I am a HUGE Tales From the Crypt fan :)

here's Roger Daltrey, when he suddenly realizes Buscemi's wife gave him the disease

I don't tend to think of these characters as losers [I play]. I like the struggles that people have, people who are feeling like they don't fit into society, because I still sort of feel that way.
