Movie Reviews Part 3 - The good, the bad and the ... rentals

I saw Resident Evil: Afterlife last night and i loved it. I've been a fan of RE since the beginning so i really enjoyed it.

Can't wait for the next one!

I was going to see that last night but we ended up seeing Paranormal Activity 2 instead. I wasn't very impressed. I haven't seen the first but had heard it was relatively scary for a low-budget film. I would not call the second one that scary. I did jump once but that was it. It was paced really slowly but this did nothing to build atmosphere and was instead tedious. The characters were kind of cheesy and some of the interactions a bit unrealistic.

2/5 stars.

Watched Zombieland on the weekend.

Quite funny in parts, and the acting is rather impressive, some good action scenes where they take the piss out of the genre. Also the cameo by Bill Murry is priceless.

4/5 Un-poped Popcorn Kernels.

I thought Zombieland was very uninspiring. A few laughs and the Bill Murray scene was brilliant. Other than that typical hollywood snooze fest.

Eat Pray Love - Good chick flick, some parts dragged otherwise a good movie.

The Other Guys - almost walked out. Was expecting a lot better for Will Farrell and Mark Walhberg

The Expendables - couldn't stop laughing at the semi bad acting. Arnie and Stallone taking the piss out of each other was classic but some kick ass gun scenes!!

I meant that that ending was a peaceful resolution.

SPOILER

NSFW:
It's like the last few seconds of film that destroy that. By that I mean the insinuated post-mortem defiling.

Just watched a serbian film and certainly gave me some food for thought.

Silentangst and lostpunk enjoyed the ending and agree it did come a bit predictable at the end. how would you have ended it?

Sir Pacman, I think the very end was fine and just a little bit more shock on top of everything else, a little bit more of a head fuck. I meant that the plot twist you could see coming before it did. Which I don't think actually detracted from it because the scene was very visually intense.

Spoiler:

NSFW:
By plot twist I mean him raping his son without knowing it and with the blood running down his legs it was pretty damn gut turning. He was set up at the beginning of the film as being a family man so it made sense in terms of shock value that he would end up participating in violent sexual acts towards his son/wife - that was the part I saw coming.

Although it contains some of the most demented sexual violence in any film I don't think that was actually the disturbing part, especially because in many scene the prosthetics detracted from the realism. The shock for me mostly wasn't actually what I was seeing, but the thought of what was happening. Does that make sense?

As for your question, what would I have changed? I don't think any part of the story, or acts, but I felt my self a bit attached from the protagonist because I couldn't entirely relate to him as a person. Although nearly half the film is setting everything up, with most of the violence in the second half, I would have made the set up a bit more geared towards making you like the guy, instead of just mostly outlining his past as a porn star and talking to old associates etc. You know, more scenes setting up the family guy kind of thing.

I watched it a few weeks ago. In a way its both a shame and a blessing that I read the various reviews, discussion and articles etc before watching it at home.

That helped me get into the necessary "headspace" prior to watching but I kept wondering what the impact would've been for somebody who just walked into that film cold, knowing nothing of the plot, the subject matter etc

Yes that does make sense. Believe that good movies make you think things without actually showing you.

Have to agree that having more compassion for the main character would have made it an better film. I found it hard to feel sorry for where he ended up if that makes sense. Wouldnt wish what happened to him on anyone but think why he got in that situation could have been developed more.

The twist I didnt see coming was when the woman walked out with the metal pole towards the end.

inception scared the piss out of me. brought on a bad existential crisis enough that i had to leave the theatre for several minutes. i'll give it another go soon, hopefully my headspace will be ready this time.

i watched red the other night. i liked the characters but the film barely held my interest.

Think i was lucky i watched with a hangover! Brain wasnt working to well so didnt think to much about it but really enjoyed it! Going to watch it again soon with a clear head.

Don't waste your money on "Skyline".

If i knew the budget for the film was only 30million i wouldn't have bothered. Awesome CGI (Where i suspect most of that 30M went towards), Shit storyline, and as for the acting - don't even get me started.
