Film: Cool Hand Luke.

They ran this on A&E a few days ago and I hadn't seen it in ages. Even on TV it was a powerful as I remember. Anyone who has been incarcerated or other wise had their will utterly broken should not be able to keep their eyes dry while watching this movie.

Fans of CHL please sound off.

Oh and mods if there is already a thread on this movie then please do your job and close this, but remember "saying it's your job don't make it right boss." ;)

Awesome flick, was one of my dads favorites(has since passed on) so now everytime I watch it, it reminds me of him.

P.S. Watchin it this very minute.

I put off watching this classic for years, used to be pretty closed minded about anything made before 1973...
but I saw it unedited a couple of years ago, and after only one viewing it's on my top 25 at least.

"Sometimes nuthin' is a real cool hand."

Cool Hand Luke has been off and on my top 10 list for several years now. One of Paul Newman's best portrayals, Luke Jackson is the man I would want to marry. I loved how this Luke (willingly or not) adopts a 'savior' type role in the prison system.

The parallels of Luke and Jesus throughout adds even more heart to the already colorful portrayal of rough jail life and the relations of the convicts. In particular, the last scene: Luke's confrontation and more-or-less reconciliation with God is one of my favorite scenes to come from the silver screen. Not only does it expose the fears and worries of the tired Luke, but it offers insight into the often troubled balance of man's relationship with God.

Luke: Anybody here? Hey, Old Man. You home tonight? Can You spare a minute. It's about time we had a little talk. I know I'm a pretty evil fellow... killed people in the war and got drunk... and chewed up municipal property and the like. I know I got no call to ask for much... but even so, You've got to admit You ain't dealt me no cards in a long time. It's beginning to look like You got things fixed so I can't never win out. Inside, outside, all of them... rules and regulations and bosses. You made me like I am. Now just where am I supposed to fit in? Old Man, I gotta tell You. I started out pretty strong and fast. But it's beginning to get to me. When does it end? What do You got in mind for me? What do I do now? Right. All right. On my knees, asking. Yeah, that's what I thought. I guess I'm pretty tough to deal with, huh? A hard case. Yeah. I guess I gotta find my own way.
Dragline: Luke?
Luke: [Shakes head and smiles] . Is that Your answer, Old Man? I guess You're a hard case, too.

I thought it was interesting that the director chose to include the apocryphal egg-eating miracle Christ performed right after the last supper.

Cool Hand Luke

one of my favorites. i first saw it when i was very young, like early early teens and loved it even back then. nothing has changed in my love for it but i have grown to undestand it more, of course.
and now after this thread i think i need another screening.

Only jailtime movie *more* hardcore? Papillon. Nothing beats Steve McQueen + French penal colonies.

I need to see this. I've heard a lot of good things about it. Plus I like Steve McQueen.

Not a huge Mcqueen fan, so I liked the Papillon book better. It's pretty gruesome and fucked up in parts...good read.

yeah, as usual the book is a lot better than the movie. the movie was sort of disappointing imo.

I would say that Cool Hand Luke is my second favorite prison movie, behind Shawshank, but in my opinion, Shawshank wasn't so much a "prison movie," but rather, a life-affirming story about friendship and hope that just happened to take place in a prison.

So I guess that makes Cool Hand Luke my favorite prison movie, my second favorite Newman movie (behind only The Hustler) and my thirty-ninth favorite movie of all time with a 3.6 out of 4.0 on the LL-O-meter.

How can a person have a "favorite prison movie"? I guess one would have to have never been in prison...

Oh come on! that's like saying... 'How can a person have a "favorite drug based movie"? I guess one would have to have never been in rehab... ' OR 'How can a person have a "favorite war movie"? I guess one would have to have never been in a war... '

There are lots of shitty things in this world. Just because a person hasn't been in one of these situations, doesn't mean that they can't enjoy a film that's based on them to the extent of calling it their "favorite".

You have great taste. As i've posted on here years ago, Papillon is my all time favorite movie.and Cool Hand Luke is right up there to. I had seen both these movies before I went to prison, but afterwards I developed a new apprciation about the message of perserverence.

Also for anyone who digs Steve Mcqueen movies The Great Escape is a must see.Lots of great actors in that flick.

Whoa! Some people, like me, have never seen Cool Hand Luke. You think maybe it's not such a good idea to spoil the ending right there in the beginning of your thread?
