In 2 days i am getting all 4 wisdom teeth extracted.
I am being give 1 10mg valium 1 hour before surgery and i am being hooked up to an IV that is supposed to knock me out for the most part.
After the surgery i am being prescribed Non-Narcotic painkillers.

The first question i have is does anyone know what might be in the IV? Anyone who is a dentist or who has had this done.
Second, from what i understand i will be in some serious pain. Do you know what non-narcotics i might be prescribed?

I don't know what's in the IV...but it is effective...

Why not call your oral surgeon's office and ask these questions? I know my mom was given my script for percs the same day as the script for 2 valium (1 night before 1 morning of) which was changed to 3 valium (2 morning of) when i expressed i didn't want an IV, hated needles, and wasn't going to allow myself to be given an IV...heh...

Many of my friends were given narcotic pain killers, ie. vicodin of some sort after their extractions.

I could see something that would be a long lasting pain relief. Rx Aleve (Naproxen) , something of that nature, meant so that you don't have to keep taking pills every 3-4 hours. Something that lasts a lot longer. I am just guessing though, Naproxen might not be strong enough.

Hopefully someone w/ more experience will reply

Could be something like midazolam and fentanyl, or maybe just a anesthetic.

They will more than likely prescribe you 800mg ibuprofen or some naproxen sodium.

and finally 1k post.

It will also depend on how much damage the extraction does based on how developed each tooth and root is, how deep they are and a host of other factors. Having all four done at once to me means they aren't expecting intense problems with any specific teeth though.

The dentist I worked for used conscious sedation for such procedures. The drugs used were a combination of IV benzos and an anaesthetic. The patients weren't actually unconscious during the procedure - you actually need them to be somewhat co-operative - but they had no memory of it afterwards.

They were usually prescribed 30mg codeine/500mg APAP for post-surgical pain relief. If you're being prescribed non-narcotic painkillers I'd expect a NSAID and APAP.

I got my wisdom teeth removed years ago. I was induced with midazolam to completely knock me out with fentanyl. I didn't remember a thing that happened and taken out in a wheel chair. I didn't have any pain until a few hours later. I was prescribed 20x Vicoprofen tablets (7.5mg Hydrocodone/200mg Ibuprofen) for the pain to take with Tylenol every four to six hours. I really needed the hyrodcodone for the pain and it was very helpful.

Most people I know that go through this procedure are given a narcotic. Sucks in your situation. Most likely you will be prescribed Ibuprofen 800mg. Ibuprofen is very often used in dentistry. You'll probably be told to take it with acetaminophen.

I'm very surprised you weren't given a narcotic. You may need one. I was prescribed it before the surgery so I would have it. Heck, my dentist prescribed me x20 Vicodin for having a tooth removed.

That's midazolam (Versed) alright!

for my wisdom teeth i was told it was a mixture of fentanyl and diazepam in the I.V., but maybe i just imagined them saying this or was misinformed.

Quite likely. Different anaesthetists will choose different combos for the same job. Sometimes the choice is influenced by the patient's overall medical condition and sometimes it's just the doctor's personal preference. Fentanyl is a pretty common choice for certain procedures (used a lot here for epidurals).

I just took the Lidocaine and the Nitrous oxide and oxygen mixture. My dentist told me to bring a walkman in for the surgery which was a great idea on his part! I just hit pause and play really fast for most the surgery lol!

Afterwards I was given 30 5mg oxycodone/Apap and 20 10mg Hyrdocodone/Apap. I had some complications during surgery which required them to cut a lil deeper so thats the reason for the excess of narcotics

u will need a narc i dont know how old u are,but if your of age insist on RX before surg.in my exp they oper got there money then forgot about me,leaving me in excrucation pain for days keeping it clean afterwards is most important!

Luckyyy. Myself and everyone I know just got some vic, but you got a bottle of oxy on top of that, so not fair.

Hmm, I always wondered what I had...I liked it a lot whatever it was!

Once for two simultaneous wisdom teeth extractions it was an IV in the back of the hand...5 seconds and dreeeeaaaammm. Loooovely feeling. They said I would have no memory, but I did. I just didn't care. Another was during a gastroscope and again I could remember, and the last time was during a spinal operation to dissolve a disc. Just before the needle went into the heart of a VERY painfully herniated disc, the doc says 'here is a little something I brought off a guy on the street corner...it will help you relax...." It did. Very much so. I always thought it was something similar to Heroin I guess. And that's why I steer clear of H...I think I'd like it too much.

So, do you think it was fentanyl then?

idiot they wouldnt give u fentanyl...

I got a fentanyl and benzo IV for my wisdom teeth. Wish I would have known my benzo's a little better back then...it was either diazepam or midazolam.

Afterwards I was given a percocet, and vicodin (although he said it probably wouldn't help much...). Given a refill of lortab when it was a weekend, and another refill of percs, because I had a dry socket from smoking. Overall, it was a rockin' experience. =D

I also got a dry socket from smoking when I got my tooth removed because of that I was given a refill for Vicodin. It hurt. I was offered Percocet but for some dumb reason I chose the hydrocodone.
