I've read through these threads and noticed a good deal of people that suffer some sort of insomnia. Do you suffer insomnia and if you do, what sort of insomnia? Also, do you believe that it is due to the drugs that you use or if you just naturally have sleep problems? Do you take anything for sleep...

1. My insomnia issues are due to waking in the middle of night multiple times.
2. I believe that I naturally have insomnia because I've suffered it forever and the Adderall wears off well before I go to bed and generally sedates me because I have ADD.
3. I take Seroquel for sleep.

Well while I have always had some form of insomnia my whole life, drugs have just exacerbated it greatly. I have been sober for about 6 months now, and without sleep aids, I am not able to sleep at all. I will stay up till 7 am then pass out until 3-4pm. Very unhealthy and it sucks. Even my sleep aids (lunesta and trazodone) are becoming ineffective, and am not willing to try seroquel. Before I was sober, I smoked pot every day and used that to help me sleep, and opiates eventually.

Chronic-Intermittent Insomnia for the last 2.5 years I believe its unrelated to my drug use (pot is really the only drug I use with any frequency, that alcohol; once in a blue moon I've done something like lsd or shrooms or ex, never enough to have caused this insomnia)

Meds tried:

OTC Pain/AntiHistamine/Doxylammine/Herbal
Xanax [Alprazolam] (0.5mg, occasionally more)
Zoloft [Sertraline] (up to around 150-200mg)
Ambien [Zolpidem Tartrate] IR (10-30mg)
Trazadone (up to 150 or 200mg)
Klonopin [Clonazepam] (0.5mg, occasionally more)
Mirtazipine (7.5 - 30mg) {NOTE Less is more here, Higher doses reduce its effects}
Marijuana [unknown strains, good and bad, wish I could find 100% indica] (small doses at night)

My feelings on them:
OTC Pain/AntiHistamine/Doxylammine - crap for me, bad mornings;
Herbal -{chamomile, valerian, kava, melatonin} better than nothings, nice herbal teas are soothing and good for sleep hygiene, melatonin can give strange dreams, melatonin used to be mildly helpful {NOTE les is more for melatonin, a 1mg dose is plenty, don't be tricked by things marketed as EXTRA-Strength melatonin 10mg tabs... its bulcrap};
Xanax- better than nothing but alone in a small dose not as helpful;
Zoloft- all around crap, no help for sleep or anxiety;
Ambien- no trippiness, little sleep help, wasn't worth the money (even at cheap generic) just didn't help me;
Trazadone- worked at first, starting low doses (50mg) as doses got higher it eventually stopped working; Trazadone has issues with its main metabolite being mCPP [read bad]; it can have bad morning effects though I rarely had these until just lately, thus I stopped taking it;
Klonopin- Much better than xanax; so far is working ok. but Im afraid of tolerance increasing too much; its great in day time at very small dose for when I am teaching and having anxiety issues that day
Mirtazipine - very bizarre; knocks me out, but began to develop weird dreams in the mornings: I'd wake up and do something then wake up agin in bed and go do something else then wake up again in bed, finally actually waking up very confused/disturbed at having dreamed so many random events.

Want to ask the doc/psych soon about trying an Rx for small dose klonopin for occasional daytime use(0.5mg) and something stronger for nights like Temezepam/Nitrazepam
That way I wouldn't ever be abusing the night time slepy benzo, but could occasionally use the knolopin more (Can you blame me for maybe once a month liking to smoke a bit of herb and take a klonopin...)

Don't want to try seroquel, heard/read too many bad things;

Marijuana - This has helped me as much as any Rx drug I have tried, Its probably hard to get a medical Rx for insomnia/anxiety for weed, but I literally live like 5 miles from a state where medical pot is legal; Pot can be good and bad for sleep; you need the right kind of strain and the right dose; too much and you can't sleep because you're wayyyy to high, or wrong strain and you may have body stone but too much mental buzz to be able to sleep etc.
that being said with the advances in medical marijuana, you could get the strain that is tailored just to your needs for anxiety and sleeping. Dear Everyone, legalize medical marijuana, help me out here.

there's my 2 or more cents. I'd love to hear feed back from others.

(of course different combinations of the above apply but that would make this post wayyy to long.
a little herb and a low dose of klonopin works wonders)

won't go into detail now but there's a lot to be said about basic sleep hygiene:
ie. don't lay in bed all day and expect to fall right asleep when you want to at night;
lighting, exercise, diet, etc
they all play a part

I currently use a lot of sleep-music to help me fall asleep in combination with my drugs.

Used to have the unholy trifecta of finding it difficult to get to sleep, waking multiple times, and then waking up fully at 2-4am. All of those problems disappeared once I was prescribed mood stabilisers for bipolar disorder.

The other day I ran out of one of my meds (Seroquel, I also take Epilim) and didn't bother getting it refilled for two days and I had the worst night's sleep I've had in a year. Definitely not going to let that happen again.

As mentioned, there is a lot to be said for good sleep hygiene although it can be a bitch to develop that if your weekday timetable is radically difficult than your weekend one - eg if you start work at 6am on weekdays but have no reason or desire to be up at that hour on a weekend and want to socialise of a night on weekends.

I have bouts of insomnia, but its only related to stress in my life. Unfortunately there isn't much I can do about these stressful times, so I usually take temazepam, carisoprodol, or something like that to help with sleep for a few weeks. It kind of comes and goes.

i was diagnosed with "delayed sleep phase disorder" which bassically means i get to sleep 2 or 3 hours later every night... i have hella "knockyouthefuckout meds" but don't use them correctly so sometimes i'll also be up for 60 hours for no apparant reason... lately things have been better though

Damn. 60 hours? That's a long haul.

I would be asleep now if I had weed. Happy 4.20 to anybody in my time zone. or the later one. Smoking right now would be so excellent. Damn.

I have insomnia too, I've slept 3 hours in 8 days.
No drugs. Almost psychotic at this point. Stuff's moving in the corner of my vision, I've gotten up 4 times already becasue i heard the front door open and someone come in.

I have my first Psych appointment tomorrow, if he doesn't prescribe me something to help I'm gonna go insane.

This is precisely what you need to tell the Psych, straight up.
If he/she neglects to take that into consideration then immediately request to see someone else.

Insomnia to the point when you are having hallucinations can be dangerous and does require help.

I wish you luck

1. I can't fall asleep, I wake up in the middle of the night multiple times and can't get back to sleep
2. I think its just me because Ive had pproblems with it since i was a child
3. Ive tried:
Ambien, Lunesta, Seroquel, Trazodone, Mirtazepene, Melatonin, benadryl, Xanax, various herbs and teas, ugh some other shit i cant even remember but not one of these meds worked, I still wouldnt be able to fall asleep and would wake up in the night.
Lorazepam and temazepam work ok
weed keeps me awake most of the time, i had some purple erkel once and that helped me sleep but thats all

Ive had insomnia since i was a youngster like 10 or so

I remember laying in my bed knowing i had school the next day but couldnt sleep
weed helped for a while, still smoke it every day, not as much though
But that could be attributed to my recreational stimulant use over the past 2 years
If im having a lot of trouble sleeping Tylenol Pm or Benydrel usually do the trick, sometimes alcohol anything that makes me more sluggish

I can regulate it sometimes and start sleeping at 11pm or midnight instead of 3 or 4 even 5 but after a week it switches back

It seems that many of drug abusers suffer from insomnia. I sometimes wonder if it is really me or possibly the prescription drugs I've been on forever or all the drugs I used to consume.

I've been prescribed the following in the past:
Seroquel, Respiridone, Ambien, Sonata, ProSom, Restirol, Halcion, Benedryl, Flunitrazepam, Vistirol, Xanax, Zyprexa, Trazodone, Remeron, Lunesta, Elavil...I believe that's all of them.

hey 'phatass' no pun intended; what are your "knockyouthefuckout" meds?

before bedtime

Cyamemazine as much as i want (an anti psychotic which is also sedating)
loprazolam 1mg (hypnotic benzo)
Diazepam 30mg (sedating muscle relaxing benzo)
Meprobamae 1.2 grams (Sedating muscle relaxer, the main metabolite of carispodol (Soma))
Aceprometazine 30mg (sedating anti-histamine)
Buprenorphine, i sometimes tke a bit in the evening coz it helps chill (opiate)

thats it ATM, but new legislation where i live is going to reduce the boxes of meprobamate/aceprometazine to 5 pills per box instead of 30, and docs will not be allowed to Rx more than 1 pill a nighet (400mg meprobamate/10mg aceprometaibe) because of old people who take it and then have accidents thee next day... which is just stupid becoz when the pharmacist told me this I said "it's the same thing with long lasing hypnotic benzos", she said "thats why docs don't prescribe long lasting hypnotic benzos to old people" to which i said "well why not just do th same with meprobamate/aceprometazine, and just not Rx it to the elderly, instead of completely changing the legislation....." IMO/IME meprobamate/aceprometazine is the best sleeping pill out there, also coz it doesn't have strong amnesic properties like many hypnoic benzos (Flunitrazepam for instance....

Do all benzos add to your tolerance collectively?

I would want to consider low dose klonopin as needed during day time when anxiety is a problem especially when teaching, but something stronger at night a la temazepam, nitrazepam, lorazepam, loprazolam etc. However, I'm worried about building up a tolerance/dependence on benzos

I will definitely ask about Meprobamate/Aceprometzine next time I see the doc/psych (if I can ever see one)
