Hello bluelighters! I have been a lurker on this website for quite some time but never have had a need to post. So here I go! :)

I apologize if this board is not in the appropriate forum.

Can a person be addicted to the act of pill popping? I know it is possible for a person to have an addictive behavior, but on this specific act I found no information. I have my theories but I just can't seem to get the words out right. (If that makes sense?) What has crossed my mind was Pavlov's theory on classical conditioning. I would love to hear anyone's input and their own theories! :)

Yes yes another person will finally agree with me! That is how I explained why people enjoy smoking or snorting even if it isn't a specified drug or something stupid like snorting baking powder or sumthin. As for pill popping, I'm not quite sure. Are you addicted to popping pills? You could always do a trial and start popping vitamins and placebos and see what happens.

There's a problem inherant with popping pills, since the subject would be administering the pills themself, they would know what was in them and could act as a placebo affect

If there was a way to make this blind/double blind then it would be interesting to see the outcome

Absolutely possible. I know people who've given up their DoC but are still hooked on the ritual which went with administering it - mostly those who snorted or injected their DoC. And yeah, there's probably some operant conditioning at play. In some of the opiate threads you'll notice people talking about going to the ER and their pain easing once they know they're going to be given a narcotic - ie, before they've actually been given anything.

It can certainly become just a habit, too. If you've been taking meds for any length of time, popping them becomes part of your daily routine and you reach for them without thinking in the same way you might put the kettle on and make coffee when you wake up even though you're not thirsty or reach for a cigarette when the phone rings.

Get yourself something harmless to pop - some of the homeopathic remedies or even something from your doctor.

yeah man the physical fixations that revolve around addictions often become addictions themselves.

btw I know someone who used to (and may still) IV water in his car on the 'come-up' of his daily methadone dose, because he was mentally addicted to both the ritual of preparing a shot, and the physical fixation of administering it.

Pretty crazy how easily conditioned humans are. It can make you feel kind of like clay if you think about it for a while.

Yes, I am addicted to pain killers. It has been quite an on and off relationship. I also believe I have conditioned myself in the act of pill popping with the "high" as my reward. I believe this behavior has been going on for quite some time subconsciously. If I don't have my opiates I'm either taking vitamins or anything else I can get my hands on that I feel has some sort of reward even if it is all mental. I am working on tapering myself right now thanks to all of the informal threads on bluelight!

It blows my mind! Which is exactly why I have chosen to go into the field of psychology to understand this a little better. :)

totally.. your brain starts to associate certain behaviors with physical pleasure it receives as a result of the act. the whole process of preparing and shooting dope was an addiction in itself for me.. just the act of meeting up with a dealer and scoring dope was a high. so yea definitely.

I have the exact same thing happen to me: The rituals, the place I sit when I shoot, the music I listen to when I get high, the copping... These behaviors will all essentially satisfy the reward system in my brain...derived from the feeling that a substance gives. I feel as an addict I really put opiates on a high pedestal subconsciously...

Madlibz thats awesome your going into psychiatry, are you going to college for it? I think that would be such a fascinating career! I am so amazed by the human mind, the endless possibilities and patterns within it...

I would have a similar conversation with my ex girlfriend, she wasn't the brightest person, but she brought this up, and kind of took me back. She asked what do you think is better, finally getting in contact, and going to score some dope, or actually doing the dope. One could argue that we were more addicted to the act of getting it that , than doing it, and I'd also say I'd felt better just thinking that haha relief is minutes away.

Additionally, sometimes if I'm sick, I will scrap caps and shit, and I KNOW there are no opiates in them, but I just like doing the shot.

^ when i was coming off dope a few years back and i was down to just chipping like once a week it was all about going on the run to get the dope. i would go, and id see my guys car pull up and i would get a rush of excitement and adrenaline.. then once i had the dope in hand id be like "i dont actually even want to do this..." but of course, since i already had it i figured i might as well lol. :\
