Has anybody else ever had a glowingly positive experience with Gabapentin? For me its been the ultimate panacea. Several months ago I was firmly trapped in the throes of alcoholism and drug addiction. Alcohol was definitely my drug of choice, and I would drink anywhere from a pint to a fifth of vodka a day. Additionally, I would occasionally dabble in heroin and xanax to keep things interesting. I resorted to drugs to help alleviate my pervasive anxiety. While it worked in the beginning, I soon found myself entrenched in a dreadful lifestyle of fear, despair, and addiction. To put things bluntly I I was stuck in hell. I hated using but I couldn't stop it. My docotor than prescribed me gabapentin, and it has been an absolute miracle. My anxiety has been kicked to the curb, I feel more motivated, and it gives me subtle euphoria that lasts all day. The aggregate of these effects has resulted in a startling diminishing of my cravings to use. I've now been completely sober for 26 days. While I can certainly attribute some of this to AA and working the steps, I don't think I could have done it without gabapentin.

Not me, gabapentin/Neurontin did little or nothing for me. I guess it did kinda help getting through benzo w/d but I think that was mainly psychological from me swallowing pills. In the end Neurontin ended up making my hands shaky after about 2 hours. That wasn't worth it so I ditched it.

peace.

Yes certain people DO react very well to gabapentin. But like anything that affects the GABA receptors there is withdrawals. You can find a lot of other peoples experiences with neurontin aka gabapentin on askapatient.com . Its a great site I always go there for pharm reviews.

But at high doses it feels like a mild form of ecstacy. When you breathe deep adrenaline rushes to your brain. And it makes you feel numb like a brick wall. Well for me at least lol. I personally would read about wds though and see if they do exist and how severe they are. Then you may want to consider switching over to lyrica. Or just use which ever one has the least wds Im not sure honestly. I do think lyrica was made to be stronger so it might have worse wds who knows.

I am prescribed gabapentin 600mg's 4 times a day for neuropathic pain along with morphine. I certainly don't find it to be anywhere near a miracle drug but it does help quite abit for neuropathic pain with relatively few side effects. Though some people do get hit hard with side effects from gabapentin all the same.

I have neuropathic pain along with bipolar disorder and anxiety. My first shrink thought gabapentin was a cure all for bipolar disorder and anxiety. I found it did absolutly nothing for the bipolar except maybe make the depression abit worse and it did very little for anxiety hence why i am on 6mg's of clonazepam a day though i usually only take 4mg's. My stupid shrink got it in her head to yank me off valproate and seroquel and just leave me on gabapentin to control my moods. It was a disaster to say the least and it took me a good year to get stabilized again.

I have also been addicted to alcohol and opiates over the years. Gabapentin helps somewhat with alcohol cravings when combined with a benzo but not much. It does nothing for opiate cravings.

So for me atleast it's far from a wonder drug. But everyone if different.

Hmmmm. I have heard that some people don't respond as well to it. That's very curious to me. I guess that just goes to show the variant nature of everyone's nuerochemistry. As far as withdrawals go, I've developed a schedule for taking the gabapentin to not only allow for maximum efficacy of the medication, but also to hopefully avoid withdrawals. I take it on an as needed basis (when I'm at school or out and about in the world) which usually amounts to about 3-5 days a week. I heard that tolerance builds quickly so I thought it would be wise to not take it everyday. Hopefully that will also allow me to sidestep any withdrawals.

Well that makes sense. If hes taking 600mg 4 times a day oppose to taking 2400mg at once he prob won't feel anything.
600mg doesn't do anything for me, once I get up to around 900mg I start to feel its subtle effects that at 1200 it becomes rather intense imo. Its a one shot deal everyday type thing though if your dosing 4 times a day it will flange your tolerance.

So I think a lot of the different experiences can also be related to different dosing regimes. Some are dr prescribed, others are not. Thats all I will say.

I was recently prescribed it but I have to finish the other meds I am on first because they interact. I heard that it makes you gain weight, I read reports that people gained 100lbs on it.

If i can manage to skip the gabapentin for a few days (this is hard as my pain flares up and i do get withdrawals) i can get a high from about 3 and a half grams. It's sorta like being drunk with abit of a odd psychedelic feeling and some stimulation thrown in. But tolerance to gabapentin rises faster then with any other drug ive taken and it's not worth wasting my pills to maybe catch a high.

Also gabapentin is the only drug i know of where bioavailability goes down as dose increases which is one thing that makes lyrica the better of the 2. Eating before you take gabapentin increases bioavailability and so does taking certain opiates beforehand like morphine and hydrocodone and maybe a few others. Taking naproxyn beforehand also increases the BA.
