How do you guys feel about the Above The Influence commercials?

i think they're dumb and a horrible attempt at preventing drug use

you can infer a hundred different things from some of them which have nothing to do with drugs

I think they're hilarious. Shows the failure of the government propoganda when instead of guilting us into stopping we laugh instead. I do my best to always pack a bowl directly after seeing one =D

Lol. I love them. I think they are a ridiculous way of drug prevention. I've recently stopped/haven't been trying, but the past ~5years or so I've been collecting their ads from magazines and use them as posters. I stopped because I'm seeing less and less of them from Times, etc. Makes me sad as their ads are quite entertaining.

i always visualize the actors at a party with me smoking and drinking along side me , like i could act like i am ubove the influance to get payed so i can buy some smoke lol, or the other week wen i didnt smoke bud i was like wtf is my arrow above my head??? huh

I just think they're a joke, I mean some kid may see those commercials and have some kind of re-affirmation moment where they tell themselves they'll never do drugs, but then they'll find themselves at a party someday and have a hit of a joint and realize they love it and all that anti drug propaganda goes out the window.

You can't stop people from doing drugs, and not everyone who uses drugs is a loser which is what those commercial seem to imply. I think they should just educate kids about drugs in a factual unbiased manner and they'd have greater success. Telling a kid not to do something is basically just telling them to do it, kids like to rebel. I think those commercials are just a waste of money.

All I can think of is the parodies I've seen of them from shit like family guy. Hilarious. But seriously what a waste of money.

Those commercials make me angry! I personally think they're completely stupid, and when I think about how my kid will probably react when she's old enough to understand the "anti-drug" message....hell, she's just like me, and those ads make me want to spark up a bowl and take a shot EVERY. TIME.

ugh.

you want your kid to be anti-drug, or to not do drugs?! then TELL THEM about YOUR own experiences, make it PERSONAL! Kids are naturally self-centered, so explain it to them in a way that they can fit in their own little worlds!

I think some of them make some good points. Unfortunately, those good points are eclipsed by the retardedness of the majority of the commercials.

Retarded or not, I still find them to be a step-up on past anti-drug campaigns. Instead of going the "pot is evil and will KILL YOU" route, they're more like, "pot will get you no where in life and stoners are pathetic and boring." They used to insult the viewers intelligence...now they just insult our ability to decide for ourselves what sort of lifestyles we like/dislike. Although I do think there is a hint of truth to the message. *gasp* There really is nothing cool about a greasy stoner who sits on Pete's couch all day eating Cheetos. Lol. Of course not all users are like that.

These are a joke to me. Educate CORRECTLY and there would be a lot less overdoses, and health problems.

These are just confusing and don't make we want to stop smoking pot, and I don't think I would have thought they were intriguing or persuasive even as a child.

agreed:)

those commercials make me lose a little more faith in humanity every time I see them

I completely agree that doing nothing but sitting around and smoking weed is a pretty damn boring llfe, but if that's what someone wants to do with their life that's their choice. I can't hang out with my stoner friends who don't work anymore because it's too frustrating, especially when they are like thirty years old still live with their parents and can't even afford a beer at the bar and haven't been able to for years but they always have weed and cigarettes, and always want to borrow five dollars which they never pay back. My view is do what ever the hell you want but be accountable for your decisions and don't be a leech!

I think those commercials should say something like "hey, weed in and of itself isn't that bad for you, and if you want to use it that's fine but get a fucking life (and income) for christ sakes!!!"

Their lame to people ages sixteen and over. I can see my thirteen yearold self saying wow thats pretty cool how he turned that down. The affective ones are the meth ones where it shows family and stuff your missing in life, those commercials make me reflect on my own life.

If sitting on your lazy ass on the couch is enough for an above the influence commercial on weed, why not make some for above the influence of money that depicts 80 hour a week lawyer or business guy missing his family/life? Or above the influence of fame, could Just show a picture of Glenn Beck.

They're all hilarious.

Except for the ones about meth, those are just scary as fuck. Those air mostly in the southwestern United States. You won't see a meth Above the influence commercial in Maryland or Washington DC, usually weed.

^ i agree the meth ones are really fucked up

but other than that theyre just exactly like every other gov't attempt at anti drug propaganda. stupid and unbelievable. funny and a waste of time. reminds me of reefer madness

The one with the teenage couple that ends with them laying on the playground spinning thing, spinning slowly and looking at the sky, cracks me up. They look stoned to hell, and it looks exactly like something I would do when baked as fuck, tripping, or noddin. It's an awful campaign, and even my straightedge friends agree that it's bullshit.

I've actually read stuff saying that these commercials along with stuff like DARE tend to be counter-productive and instead make kids more interested in drugs. If this shit wasn't around maybe not as many people would be interested in drugs.

You guys remember that anti-drug commercial back in the day with the kid sitting at his dad's desk with a bong and his friend in front of him, then he finds a gun in his dad's desk and he's so high that he ends up shooting his friend, now that commercial was hillarious :D.

Who the fuck gets so high that they grab a gun and start shooting friends? hahaha Seriously I don't think weed effects judgement at all, if anything it makes you more paranoid and sketched out about things and people around you.

But anyways, I remember in 6th grade when the DARE cop came in and gave us all little books with info on every drug, and I actually remember reading about LSD and thinking it's the coolest shit ever. Having had never done a drug back then and reading "Strongly powerful substances that profoundly alters reality via massive hallucinations" or something along those lines made me super interested about something like that. Like holy crap...

But yes drug education is bullshit, and the commercials are bullshit as well. I think the better option would be to give out pamphlets that contain logical information about the dangers of substances and whatnot for anyone who might be interested, as well as giving phone numbers for hotlines or some shit.
