I have read that taking codeine with parnate is safe but I was wondering if dihydrocodeine would be the same as it is a partially synthetic opoid?

Anyone have any experience with this? I am aware you would have to reduce the dose a lot as it makes the effect of the codeine a lot more potent.

Thanks.

Hmm well some of the synthetic opiods can cause a bad rection apparently thats all.

Hypotension (profound in one case) has been seen in a few patients given morphine and an MAOI. One case of hypotension and stupor has occurred with papaveretum. Single cases of the safe use of methadone and hydromorphone have also been described.
stockleys

In other words no definitive picture or clear link as to which might interact. Codeine / Dihydrocodeine very similar although very different metabolites. ??

there's no definate answer unfortunately, best you can do is if you do try it test TINY doses first and build up.

tranylcypromine is a bitch of a drug for interactions :\

Indeed. This is true for meperidine and friends (the phenylpiperidines), as well as for propoxyphine. Probably worth noting dextromethorphan and apomorphine because of the ghost of the phenantrene structure.

Bottom line is that the sine-qua-non for MAOI interaction is that the co-drug (or metabolites) have some monoamine-dependent action, or that one of the MAO enzymes metabolizes the co-drug.

Thanks for the replies....

I am not actually taking it at the moment but I have a script for it....I am trying to decide whether I should take it and what can be taken with it safely...

I am also worried about downregulation of dopamine, serotonin etc. receptors after long term use and if this would be permenant?

Also wondering why so much is said about hypertensive crisis etc. when after looking at a scientific paper the actual death rate from hypertensive crisis on parnate is 1/100000 which is quite rare really considering the amoutn of fuss made about it.

Just because one doesn't die, does not mean one might not wish one WAS dead.

I.e there is room for a whole lot of suffering before you actually croak.
