2010 World Cup, South Africa

The papers and the people tend to build them up to be unbeatable but thats a lot of pressure to put on a team. However maybe all other countries do as well? I wonder if the papers tore strips off Germany for there poor second display?

It hasn't actually been quite as bad this time round - I was in London in 98, and it seemed like everyone thought England would win. This time, they seem to be more hoping than anything else.

Interesting point I saw elsewhere is that England also tend to build up one player (Beckham, Rooney) and invariably something goes wrong (usually injury; in Rooney's case both injury and loss of form).

It's incredibly sad for England, because (thanks to Germany and France's problems) England should have an easy run to the semi-finals, if they had topped this group: Ghana or Serbia, followed by Mexico, or maybe Uruguay or South Korea. Not bad teams, but not as dangerous as Brazil, Spain or Holland.

Still: all England need to do is fluke a 1-0 against Slovenia to qualify, and then anything could happen, given the weakness of their likely opposition. (And let's remember that in 1990 England started terribly and made the semi-finals).

That game, that referee more than that yesterday in the match between the US and Slovenia made me furious. I don't know how FIFA could endorse such a fucking retarded official for such a big game. He was without question the absolute worst official we've seen thus far. We won, and he took it away from us with that offside call when there was nothing that even remotely resembled an offside position. Fucking bullshit. Fuck a draw; it was a win all the way. Unbelievable. I guess I wasn't aware that when an American gets fouled, that the free kick goes to the opposing team. I think Slovenia must haved payed that official to fuck us, because fuck us he did.

GO UNITED STATES!!!

who said the foul was called for offside? nobody. the referee has not commented on the reason for the whistle.

right. you were behind after only 12 minutes. you remained behind for the next 69 minutes (i.e. pretty much the whole game).

Offside isn't the referee's call, so it seems doubtful that he was calling offside (I didn't see the game) - there would be a flag from the linesman signalling offside. General feeling seems to be that it was for a foul, but that it was a weak decision. See here, for example: http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/jun/18/slovenia-usa-world-cup-match-report

Great game between Denmark and Cameroon just now; both sides trying to play fast attacking football. Really worth watching.

^ agreed. for me, the general level of play has been very disappointing so far. i'm sorry to see cameroon go but that was a great game.

General feeling from what I have read is that the ref is done in this World Cup. Not to mention a Slovenian having one US player in a headlock, and another having a US player in a bear hug during the time the foul was called. Still no clear explanation for a foul, no foul on the US in any replays.

So what if we were behind for a long time in the game? There is a reason they keep playing, and don't call it a game after the first goal. US made a great comeback, and should have clearly won the game. Even German media is saying the US was robbed.

my comment was in response to the poster's specific wording "it was a win all the way". if the u.s. lead from the start, the other team equalised and then the goal was disallowed right at the end, perhaps he'd have a point. as it stands, it was a draw all the way :)

in sports discussion, there are few things worse than listening to fans whine about bad calls. suck it up. it happens. "if the ref. hadn't blown that call we would have won "? maybe. if your team scored two more goals in the first half you would have won too...

i guess taking no responsibility whatsoever for the loss is the american way :)

New Zealand take the lead against Italy, and hold on for a draw! =D

Against the world champions!

Our greatest result ever, by a long long way. We may not have as much skill as other teams, but our tactics and teamwork has been brilliant :D <3

Oh wow. Fuck the Ivory Coast.

Absolutely disgraceful. Fucking cheating prick.

Kaka going to be out of most the rest of the Cup now.

[Ivory Coast player ran into him, at slow speed, away from the ball, then threw himself to the ground like he'd been shot, and Kaka got sent off. 5 minutes from the end of a game that they can't win]

Fucking Brazil, cheating all game, diving every single 50:50, 2nd goal hand ball it twice. Kaka elbowed him in the chest, yeah the reaction was stupid and shameful, but you cannot deny he elbowed him in the chest. One could also argue that when he got the yellow, Kaka could have been sent off, considering he raised his hands twice, firstly by pushing the guy holding the ball and then raising his hands to the chest of some other guy in the following melee, either could have been a red or a yellow by the laws of the game. I hate this Brazil team, mask how ordinary they are by cheating.

Nonsense.

Kaka was standing still and Keita came over and walked into him. Kaka's arm went up as Keita walked into him, but only to keep Keita from barging him.

[I hadn't seen the second Brazil goal when I wrote my previous post. Obviously handballs, but that doesn't excuse Keita in any way]
