"Cure" for Depression

My Uncle has a long history of dealing with depression, and he once said that reading the comic strips in the paper every morning had kept him out of some tough times. Comedy really is healing.

Mitch Hedburg has pulled me out of more depressive moods than I can remember, even though I've practically memorized all his recorded performances.

I love just watching random stand up comedians on Comedy Central, I do it all the time.

Yeah, stand up comedians have been a lifesaver for me many many nights.

indeed!

laughter is some good medicine... not that i have, but working in health-care you really need a good sense of humor. i did take a few introductory classes, and this was mentioned, as ernestly as every thing else being taught.

myself, i have schizoeffective (pretty rare) i also have an auto immune disorder (++ rare) the one i haver is maybe the least likely one to contract, now to top that - the odd autoimmune disorder i have does not have the chromosomal marker...

the odds are probably .05%, likely or less for the population of N. US to have these and more diagnoses... is that some seriously fucked up shit?to cry why me over!, or marvel at the odds and be one of the few to challenge them..?

plenty of people i have known, including myself sometimes, will laugh when... some one is talking shit, or you bang your thumb; initially it seems most people will scream out loud, cuss, breath deep and be quiet a moment,,, then start laughing and call the hammer stupid or something ...

....at any rate, :D good thread!

It's been shown time and time again that laughter has curative effects on the body, and some recent studies have shown connections between laughing and longer life (although it's obviously just correlation at this point). Forcing your lips into a smile can actually make you feel better, and it's backed by scientific evidence too - I sometimes have to do it to keep myself from really freaking out when I'm in bad moods. Turning on Comedy Central has been a life saver for me too. :)

dishearten, that is truly fucked up. I can just imagine Chris Rock in full rape mode now with that big fake smile and those wide eyes he uses when he's telling a crackhead joke.

That sucks... I guess sometimes people misinterpret your impressions/responses... I know there are dozens of different kinds of autoimmune disorders. Hope you don't have Lupus or Graves...

Mitch Hedburg is awesome. I feel like i can relate to him a lot better knowing he was a heroin addict as well.
