Wheezing when I breathe

Alright so here's a bit of background on me. I never smoked at all until a couple of years ago, then I started smoking cigarettes but quite rarely, as in once every few weeks at the very most. Towards the end of the year there were a couple of weeks where I smoked 3-4 times a week, but nothing more than that. The next year I started smoking Cannabis, I smoked pretty much once a day at least all the way up until this March when I was forced to stop because of moving country and not having access to any dealers here.

I notice that if I take deep breaths I always wheeze and I often find myself coughing very harshly and loudly, like a long-time smoker. I do not usually feel the need to cough, but sometimes I do, and when I do it is quite painful.

Now I know quite a bit about Cannabis and I would not think that the small amounts (0.2-0.3g of dank in one bowl each day) I smoked would cause this, as Cannabis is much more lenient on the lungs than tobacco. Towards the beginning of March just before my move I happened to be sold some grit weed (sprayed with glass frosting or something similar), it was only 1/8 and I had heard of people smoking much larger amounts without any lasting problems so against my instincts I smoked it all. It made me cough harsher than usual, and made me feel tight-chested after smoking.

So I'm wondering two things. Firstly, is it worrying that I am wheezing, or is this normal for a year of smoking once a day regardless of what I smoked? Secondly, is it likely that the Cannabis caused this, the small amount of cigarettes I smoked, the grit weed, or all three?

Thanks in advance. I'm not too worried about it but I just thought I'd post here to see what people thought.

It is definitely not normal to be wheezing after smoking once a day for a year.
It doesn't seem like you smoked enough cigs to result in wheezing either.
That leaves the grit weed...
I had never heard of it before. Why would someone spray weed with glass? To make it heavier?
That is really sick shit.

If I were you, I would try to eat an outrageously healthy diet for a few months, and exercise as much as possible (to the point where the wheezing prevents you, if it does).
I personally would try for a minimum of 7 hours a week of cardio, during those months.

I had asthma myself, and was unable to run for more than about 3 minutes when I was 22. But I started to run every day, and built up to an hour a day. My asthma disappeared sometime near the 2 -month point, though that was probably mostly because I stopped eating all dairy products. Ice cream was my favorite food, but every month or so, when I tried to eat a scoop of ice cream, it would give me a strong reaction, and I finally decided that it was just not worth it.

To put it simply, I think you should take your health into your own hands, and try to heal your lungs with healthy food and exercise. It seems better than using those inhalers that a doctor might give you (adrenaline, etc.) , which can be pretty toxic.
Good luck.

Thanks for the advice. wasn't expecting such a complete reply so quick. Yeah, in the UK there are problems with contaminated weed, firstly there is "soapbar" hash which often has leather, other drugs, and all sorts of nasty things in it, and secondly there is grit weed which is covered in sand, frosted glass, or ground glass, all to make it heavier - but there is an extra reason for them doing this, the sand/frosted glass/ground glass looks like the crystally trichomes that you normally find on bud, so they also make the bud look like it is higher quality than it really is, while increasing the weight and dramatically increasing their profits. I hope the situation is not the same here in Poland, but I have yet to find a dealer here so I don't know yet.

The diet thing is a good idea, the only problem for me being that I am a picky eater to the extreme. I can't eat the majority of food, and to top it off, I'm a vegetarian, so my selection of types of food that I can eat is very small, and most days I will just eat a margherita pizza or cheese on toast for dinner (Very unhealthy I know, and I am quite underweight so I really should change this, but the fact is I can't stomach most food). I'll do my best to change this but sadly I've been trying to change my diet for a long time with little/no success.

I myself have always had trouble running/jogging for long periods of time my entire life, so it is possible I actually had this wheezing trouble before but only really noticed it now because I haven't smoked lately. I'm actually a little more worried now, because I've been reading up on a couple of things, such as COPD, and I match a lot of/all of the symptoms, I've also noticed that whatever it is, it seems to have gotten worse lately. Now if I go for long walks, even when just walking and not jogging or running, I get very very lightheaded and start to feel like I am very out of breath and might faint.

Exercise is definitely something I will do as one thing that might have been a cause in me not noticing this before is that although I did smoke a bowl each day, I would always go for a walk when I decided to smoke, and this would usually be a 30-60 minute long walk, so I had plenty of exercise each day, plus I occasionally did push-ups/sit-ups for a bit of extra exercise when I felt like it. Now since I've moved I've not been out all that much and I get very little exercise, plus while all smoke is bad for your lungs, Cannabis does widen the airways so it is possible that actually ceasing smoking may have made it worse if the issue is narrowing of the airways.

The thing about the grit weed, is if the particles were inhaled, it is possible it contained silica or something similar, which could cause COPD or Silicosis. However, I remember reading about grit weed and the source on it said that a scientific study had been carried out and determined that even the microscopic particles found in frosted glass spray were too large to be inhaled into the lungs, so while they might cause damage to the mouth or throat, they weren't a huge cause for concern. This took my mind off it at the time, but I'm worried that maybe they were wrong.

While you wouldn't think that small amounts of smoking can be harmful they can be. Everyone is different. I used to smoke a decent amount and it never bothered me. But eventually even a bowl made my throat sore.

So i decided to cook with my cannabis. But it seemed to go quickly that way. Finally I decided to get a vaporizer and it was the best purchase I have ever made in my life. I only wish I would have bought it when I started because I could have saved lots of $$$. I love me some glass every blue moon though.

if you smoke grit weed (bud sprayed with powdered glass)
then you are inhaling microscopic red hot beads of glass.

this causes 2 things-
- holes form in the lung tissue, that only get larger over time.
- silicosis. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silicosis

if you knew it was grit weed you should have either not bought it, or thrown it away as soon as you knew.
these people who have smoked an 8th and been fine will definitely be feeling the effects in years to come, as you are.

i know its tought throwing something you just paid for away,
but at the end of the day, a few nights being stoned is not worth irreversible damage to your lungs.

im sorry to say this, but you are most likely screwed.
please, see a doctor immediately.
and yes, i know what i am talking about when it comes to this subject.

see a doctor, explain to him the situation. he wont give a fuck about your cannabis use, so
no need to worry about him telling the gestapo.
remember, doctor/patient confidentiality is part of the Hippocratic oath.

oh, and the grit weed thing is only really a problem in england.
dealers who've tried it in scotland have had the utter shit kicked out of them.
if you come into contact with people selling soapbar and grit weed, delete their number and NEVER talk to them again.

I'm also a vegetarian, something that it's good to do is make a large quantity of a healthy food (beans, lentils, brown rice, chili, a stew or soup, etc.), and then eat it when you don't feel like cooking. Brown rice with sauteed vegetables is a healthy and easy to make meal. Also you could take vitamins, vegetarians should supplement their diet with a few vitamins if it isn't a totally complete diet, especially D and B vitamins. Make sure to get Vitamin D2 though, because Vitamin D3 is derived from animal parts.

Did your weed look like grit weed? What country were you previously in (while smoking)? Grit weed sounds like some bad shit, it makes me glad that I live in the US (for once).

I wonder how much this is true in Poland?

It isn't true in Poland. In Poland I personally know people who have been punished for having smoked, and by having smoked I mean there was zero evidence of them smoking other than they tested positive on a drug test. Poland is very harsh on smokers of all kinds.

I was previously in the UK, I was 95% sure it was grit weed because while it looked like dank, it was rough to the touch and scratched a CD. However, while I previously thought it might be grit weed, I remembered something the other day, I shared this 1/8 equally with two people. I asked both of them the other day if they have any coughing, wheezing, etc, both of them said they've had absolutely no problems whatsoever, so I'm pretty confident now the grit isn't to blame. I'm starting to think now that it's possible I have asthma just without ever having attacks, or maybe I suffered some damage from some severe bronchitis I had a while back (lasted 2 weeks, severe coughing, horribly sore throat, coughing up blood every day).

The other issue with the doctor thing is that I do not yet have my residence card here and I would have to seek out a private (expensive) doctor rather than seeing one for free unless I were to wait until August when I get my residence card.

Also, thanks for the advice about eating as a vegetarian. The problem for me is I simply find it very difficult to eat most food, but as I said I'm doing my best do change that. I haven't used vitamin supplements before so I'll look into getting some, thanks :)

Jesusgreen I am almost in the same boat as you. Not a heavy cigarette smoker but I partake in the herb quite a bit, and then I moved to PL few years back. Noticed wheezing after smoking as well as a feeling of phlegm being stuck in my lungs after a new batch. I had smoked it for 2 weeks (got the batch at the middle or so of may) before I began to notice it. I stopped since then and it has been getting progressively better.

man that gritweed sounds nasty. How did you smoke it?? Itd be crazy to smoke a bunch through a bong and then have a big pile of glass balls sitting in the bottom of the bong water.

Do you feel like youre not getting enough air sometimes or is it just wheezing?

Ive had severe asthma my whole life and it could be that youve got a mild case of it. Although the first time you had a real asthma attack youd be driving to the hospital in 2 seconds thinking you were gonna die.

Hm, this sounds similar to what my cousin experienced. She just started smoking ganja and cigarettes; very lightly may I add. After a while, she noticed she had trouble breathing, wheasy-ness, and pain. She visited her doctor and she had a partially collapsed lung. Now, not to worry you - I just think you should be concerned about this.

She wasn't a very heavy smoker by any means, it may just be the fact that her lungs were naturally weaker or more sensitive, than most. I would pay a visit to the doctor - better to be safe than sorry.

I have asthma and usually when smoking its not a problem, but if i have a smoke and then go to bed, when im lying down it sometimes feels like im not getting enough air and i get a bit paranoid about it, but its usually fine,, id definaetly get tested for asthma if i were you

Go to the doctor and get checked out for asthma. Although you might just have some throat irritation or some excess mucus buildup. Is it a constant cough or coughing attacks? Are you constantly feeling out of breath? Does your chest feel tight as if someone is sitting on it? Go to the hospital immediately, or else you run the risk of dying from an asthma attack. Be especially on the look-out for blueness in the lips or fingernails.
