Alright, I just wanted to add a recent experience that may or may not clear up some peoples worries that they have HPPD. I am very short-sighted (-5 in one eye, -4 in the other if I remember right) and have had short-sightedness for a long time now, however with my glasses it has never bothered me. I've also always had slight visual "static" (like this: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Red-blue-noise.gif), particularly at night.
Recently I purchased 100mg of 4-AcO-DMT, and a day or two after my second trip I began noticing sparkling/shimmering spots in the corner of my vision. I attributed this to after-effects of the 4-AcO-DMT, however after a few days it had not gone away and had seemingly got worse, whenever I went outside it would be very clear and apparently, big sparkling spots in the corner of my eye. I also noticed at night my visual static was much worse than usual, and I attributed this to possible HPPD.
A few days later it was getting too much, and I was worried it was something serious, so I went to the ophthalmologist, got my eyes tested to see if I needed new glasses, and also had a general health check on my eye - I specifically mentioned my problem so they looked in detail to see what might be causing this. Eventually they came back with the result that I have a thin retina, this is actually a fairly common (usually hereditary) problem with eyes, particularly in those with strong myopia like my own. The ophthalmologist then went on to say "What you have been experiencing is perfectly normal and all people with a thin retina experience things like this - however many people never notice them until one day when one of these spots gets in the way of your vision and from then on you keep on noticing them until you stop paying attention to them", she then advised me to simply ignore them until I no longer noticed them. I did, and they went away.
Next time I tripped, once again, a day after the trip these same effects occurred again, this time I knew just to ignore them, and almost immediately they disappeared. They have not come back except temporarily when I think about them.
I just thought I'd share this because I've heard of people describing their "HPPD" in this way and I am confident that many of these cases are simply an existing eye condition that they never noticed until after use of psychedelics. I mean, we all know how much clearer the world looks after dosing with psychedelics, the same is true of visual impediments, they suddenly become easier to notice until you put them out of your mind.
I hope this puts some peoples minds to rest. Get your eyes tested if you are having something similar, if you have Posterior Vitreous Detachment, Retinal Detachment or even simply a thin retina like me then you are most likely simply noticing things that have been there all the time - just unnoticed. If you do find you have one of these eye conditions, then, just as I was instructed to, ignore it! The problem goes away very quickly once ignored. I do still notice visual snow at night because that is a harder one to ignore, but it's also less of a serious/debilitating problem so it doesn't bother me.
Hope this helps some people
