Tramadol: Aren't I Supposed to Feel SOMETHING from this?

When I had a very low tolerance for opiates, I could take a lot of tramadols and get a buzz similar to that of a lortab, but not quite as strong and not quite the same. Since my tolerance has increased drastically over the years, it wouldn't matter how many tramadols I took now, I couldn't get even a slight buzz from them.. I think some of it depends from person to person whether you'll get a buzz and also I think it depends on your tolerance to opiates as well... That's been my experience with it at least.

When I was pretty intolerant to opiates I got a bunch of tramadol, the first time or two I used it 100-150mg got me a decent buzz but after that even 250mg didn't seem to do much. I tried using it as a potentiator for codeine taking 100-150mg an hour before dosing codeine and it worked excellently.

I love tramadol because I can take 400mg and be higher than 50-60mg of hydrocodone, and tramadol doesn't seem to be affected by normal opiate tolerance for me. IE, I took methadone and hydros for 2 weeks straight and various pills before that, my tolerance was 60-70mg hydro to feel something, and it got to about 120mg or 70-80mg of methadone, but I still can feel the same 400mg dose that I took months ago, with the same level of effects. Viva tramadol!

I don't really see why it's hard to understand, I mean if you observe enough people taking tramadol you can figure that one out pretty quick. Maybe people have a hard time accepting they are genetic mutants that lack a certain enzyme =P

I think your answer is correct though, and my tl;dr version is probably that they lack that CYP450 enzyme I mentioned.

Yeah, I've heard this as well.

Tramadol acts as a prodrug for O-Desmethyltramadol and needs to be metabolized into it before you get any decent μ opioid action going on. I remember reading somewhere that Tramadol on its own acts mostly as an SNRI.

from wiki

Tramadol is demethylated by the liver enzyme CYP2D6[3] in the same way as codeine, and so similarly to the variation in effects seen with codeine, individuals who have a less active form of CYP2D6 ("poor metabolisers") will tend to get reduced analgesic effects from tramadol.

I also get a very good effect from about 350mg of Tramadol. I can feel something with as little as 100-150mg in fact.

I have this weird theory as why I get good effects from this drug while so many others don't, as I am a bit of a mutant compared to 90% of the worlds population. ha. And by that I mean that I have the gene that is responsible for left handedness thanks to my father. So maybe left handed people also have a more active form of CYP2D6 as well?

Fatstep and Pillthrill, are you two left handed by any chance?

Nope. Codeine works very well for me as well, so I put it down to having good enzymes in my body

Did you try the prolonged release or instant release version? Wikipedia says the opioid-like effects are more pronounced with the prolonged release (which would make it different than others). Can anyone confirm this?

Don't mix methadone and tramadol together, they don't potentiate each other and if you're a regular user of methadone and take tramadol, you will go into precipitated withdrawals, similar to the precipitated withdrawals you'll get if you're an opiate addict and take suboxone before you're in regular withdrawals from the opiates.

I didn't mix them together I mixed hydrocodone and methadone, and when taking methadone like I was it doesn't block other opiates.

Nope, right handed. I did read something about women being able to get high off of it more often than men but I don't know how much is true. It just seems anyone that I have taken it with (all men) don't seem to enjoy it as much as I do.
