Cats on Xanax?

My best friend's cat just gave birth to three kittens, and since then, that cat won't stop meowing uncontrollably, rolling over, spreading its legs....but anyways, to calm it down, her mom gave the cat some Alprazolam to calm it down. Just wondering, is it safe to give cats, or animals in general, benzos?

What the fuck man. She should NOT have given the cat xanax. That is so irresponsible and just plain awful. What was she thinking?? I am completely outraged.

The cat just gave birth ffs, of course it's going to be restless and irritable.

She may have just compromised the mother's ability to properly care for her newborn kittens, thus endangering the life of the kittens. She might have overdosed the cat, because I'm sure she wouldn't be aware of the correct dose rate of alprazolam for animals. So stupid. I sincerely hope the cat and the kittens are all okay.

Benzos are sometimes prescribed to animals for extreme cases of anxiety, but they should NEVER be administered by anyone except a veterinarian, because the dose rates are very different to that of humans. And they should NEVER be given to a pregnant or lactating animal.
But NEVER ever give your pet any medications unless specifically prescribed by your veterinarian.

Absolutely unacceptable.

Benzodiazepines cause impaired judgment, and amnesia in higher doses. The cat needs the proper state of mind to be able to nurture it's young. Also, benzodiazepines are not to be used during pregnancy or nursing. I imagine this applies to all species, not just humans.

If you have any influence over the person who is dosing their cat, I suggest you use it.

It could hurt and or kill the kittens. If you have no influence over the pet owner, either take the pet or call animal control.. or punch the bitch in the throat.

I fucking hate people.

She may have had good intentions. All she needs is to be educated so she will understand why her behavior is wrong. Violence will only make the situation worse.

My friend's had her two dogs visit in college and they wouldn't stop barking and he gave them a small dose of xanax, which helped. I later asked my father, a long-time doctor, about the safety of xanax to the dog and he said that in small amounts it is safe. I mean dosing anyone or any animal w/o doctor's orders could be considered stupid, but getting legal permission is not always the reality.

Just remember that animals are much, much smaller, and have a cleaner, non-medicated system, so low-low doses, like test doses, would be my protocol if I had an annoying situation like that.

thats a pretty god damn ignorant thing to do without at least researching first

If an animal is in prolonged pain or distress after giving birth, you take it to the fucking vet, not try and self-medicate. It could have an unborn kitten stuck in its uterus, or an infection, or uncontrolled bleeding, or any number of complications.

Ughh, I'm still flabbergasted at this situation...

I understand what you're saying, and I agree to a certain extent. But a cat who has just given birth rolling around and meowing is not exactly an annoying situation, it's a concerning one.

I think a lot of you are being way too harsh. They seem like they were trying to help the animal out. It's wrong, I think they understand, but some of you are getting ridiculous. Whether it was right or wrong, it was done, and work should be done from there.

^You should start saying something productive, or piss off.

I am quite productive, but when it comes to drugging cats which is a topic that pisses me off... (an asshole dosed my cat with acid and it was *never* the same)... throat punching comes to mind.. if that bothers you, then do something productive and don't *read* my responses... *next*

I concur.
