best way to store herb: fridge/freezer, humidor, or mason jar?

Pickle the MJ and store it in an airtight jar. Take out for special occasions, such as weddings, anniversaries, exorcisms etc.

This is true I save my good bud in jars and take it out for special events..especially for exorcisms

I just use a mason jar. Works perfectly for me. I've kept herb in a jar for like, six or seven months, and it was still good. Just make it's air tight.

How do you make sure it's air tight? I have to do something with boiling water or something?

^^ If the jar has a good tight lid then it should be air tight when closed

i dunno myself if there really is a way of 'making sure', however if the glass jar seems quality n the lid seems tight, i assume it to be airtight, i prefer glass jars w/o screw on lids some have like a plastic ring around the lid edge n also have a metal clamp to hold it down tight... those are champion

I keep mine in a converted vinotemp that functions as a very, very large humidor.

Smaller amounts get the mason jar treatment.

Even if it's screwed on tight, there's still air in the bottle, so doesn't that defeat the purpose? Not trying to be a wise-guy or anything, I've just never had mason jars before yesterday and I haven't ever had to store herb for longer periods before either.

Do I need to buy a metal canner? I'm probably going to keep some just in the jar, but I'm hoping to take a few jars and hold onto them for at least 2 months. The herb is slightly moist and I don't want it to be dry by the time the 2 months are over. Should I use the metal canner and get it air tight or is it ok just in the jar?

^^i dunno, i dont use the screw on lids i use the push down ones

i think air tight just means air cant get in or out, not that there is absolutely none in there?

but if u really want then yea get a metal canner, like the ones used for canning jams n produce n stuff n then yea u can get all the air out

Hey Carl Landrover, it'll be fine in the jar for the long haul, so long as you don't open it often. The amount of available O2 in the jar is minuscule, but if you let in fresh air often that supply will be refreshed and it will add up. Dividing it into smaller batches also gives you a defense against mold... but it really shouldn't be a problem anyway. Glass mason jars with the ring lid are ideal, as well as jars with a clasp holder. After curing, it should last 6 months or longer.

Oooo yeah - a glass jar with a rubber seal and all that shit.

I would suggest taking some water on the end of your finger and rubbing it round the rim of the jar everytime you open it so the moisture gets evenly distributed throughout the jar more or less, otherwise it will become stale and brittle because you keep opening it.

And of course keep this jar in a cool dark place, unless it's an amber/UV-resistant glass.

Thanks for the reply! :)

Does the size of the jar matter then? I divided it up among a few jars, but it looks like they could easily fit in the smaller jars the store had. Wouldn't there be less air in a smaller jar because there's less overall volume? Would the difference in trapped air be worth it to get the smaller jars? They're not expensive, but I'd rather not buy more if I don't need to.

I just want to make sure that it's not moldy and/or useless if I store it for a few months.

I keep mine in a glass bottle with a cork in it. I know it probably isn't air tight but it keeps it fresh and fragrant for quite a while. Much better than keeping it in a ziplock bag.

Carl Landrover, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it's properly cured it won't grow any mold, and will store in the jars you have now for a long time. Just don't pack the jar too tight, leaving plenty of dry air in between the buds.

I keep very dry ground herb in a glass jar with a screw on lid, but I keep the lid loose. Maybe once a week, I tighten the lid then rotate the jar so the herb stays loose without clumping.

For my daily smoke, I have a small covered dish in which I keep several grams. I make this herb soft and moist using a spray bottle with water. I give it a little mist as needed. It smokes a lot better when it's not so dry.
