Why do people overdose?

We often hear of people ODing, and this includes experienced drug users who should probably know better. What are the reasons for this?

-Because they are trying to (suicide)?
-Due to pure carelessness?
-Because they are seeking a thrill and want to push their limits?
-Because the drugs are stronger than they are told they are?

Looking through the Bluelight shrine, Heroin and Fentanyl appear to be the most commonly ODed drugs.

What are some tips to avoid overdosing?

I think the reasons you said basically sums it all up.
To avoid ODing you've just gotta be careful, always try a little bit before using heaps and all those things but I guess people just start caring less and less.

The reasons are either you meant to or you didnt...I will venture to say that most overdoses are not meant to happen by the user. Typically more experience users IME are the ones who overdose, as they need to consume larger amounts of the drug to get the same feelings, and are typically more comfortable and less afraid of the drug/experience than new users. I have ODed 20+ times (you would think I would learn, right?) and every time happened from me trying to push my limits and take my high to a next level. Sometimes this would be from doing too much (going from 900mg to 2100mg of DXM) but mostly came from combining drugs for their synergistic effects (Drinking beers, shooting 160mg OC, and popping 10 Valiums with a handful of Soma) As you can see those are dangerous levels of just one drug but the addict inside will sometimes push you to levels that are ridiculously dangerous all the while you are telling yourself, man this will be awesome....until you wake up in the hospital or dead :\

Exactly. Most people I know who've OD'd and died have been very experienced users. Only 1 person I know was a newb. It just happens when people want to do more than usual to get high, or mix drugs, or whatever.

Well I think the most common OD is the user who has taken a break from using for whatever reason, and then tries to use the same dose that they used to. They don't realize how much their tolerance has dropped, and OD when taking that dose.

I also think that some people may feel hopeless, and not care if they die. Like "fuck, my life sucks, i'm never getting clean, I'll take this large dose and either get high or die, don't care either way".

IME, it's usually accidental.

The reasons are usually not being aware of tolerance level, mixing drugs, and not knowing purity.

How to avoid it?
Always start small, do not mix drugs (especially depressants), stick to safer ROA's, and use around others.

a good rule to follow

do now combine cns depressants ESPECIALLY opiates and benzos

By keeping them seperate, i.e. only getting high off heroin, or only getting mad drunk, or only getting really benzod out, it's a LOT harder to overdose than if you are combining-as depending what drugs you are doing, you might not even feel too high and you could od.

Like if you are on a high dose of methadone, 12 hours into your dose, you might not think anything of it and go crazy with some benzos...but thatd be a bad move, the meth is still affecting your breathing, and now you are combining another cns depressant.

Also, IV users are more likely to OD. You have less time to guage how you feel (if any) before dosing more. Also, if you use illicit street drugs like heroin, quality can vary, so that 3 bag shot that you've been doing 3 times a day every day a week could kill you if all of a sudden the quality of the dope shot up and you did not test it/lower your dose.

Unfortunately, a lot of people enjoy this mix (myself included, but at low doses for safety) and may even be prescribed both drugs. Also, you can get away with a lower dose and get a similar feeling, which is good if you need to conserve your drugs/are beyond broke/etc. And, I agree with everything said in this thread. It's unfortunate that some combinations are sometimes more fun/exciting in a "druggy" way than just taking one drug alone...I know I feel that way sometimes.

Eh, it depends on the situation. I've never Od'd but I could see it happening from just getting more and more fucked up, and more confident that you could take the next hit off of foil, or next shot. Benzo's or alcohol just release inhibition anyway, so this could contribute to people dying from these combinations. It is an INCREDIBLY unsafe combination, but I have to admit I've tried it.

I also think that it is much harder to die from only doing opiates, with no combinations. You hear about people OD'ing, but it is usually people who don't know the strength of what they are ingesting.

As for tips; NEVER COMBINE OPIATES WITH ANYTHING. This is important. Also, start slow. Watch your breathing. If trying something new test the purity. These are all the ideas I have. Just be smart, be safe. :)

I guess a lot of it depends on the person's health in general

Considering the shit i've done; e.g - combos like meth+cocaine+alcohol+benzos+opiates on a regular basis

i don't care what happens. i like to binge till i pass out.. take a vacation from the world. i'm surprised i'm alive.. and not even permanently handicapped

if most ODs are from heroin, then i suppose they're mostly accidental. altho i'm sure many are intended.. opiate OD is probably fairly painless, by comparison to many other ODs

i've ODd on crack. the puking wasn't so bad. just the feeling i was in shock about to die when i passed out. somehow i woke up a few hours later shaking & freezing cold, but in one piece. any stimulant OD would likely be quite painful - heart attacks, strokes etc.. i'm sure most are caused by psychosis - once psychotic, the person continually doses till they fall dead from heart failure

benzo OD would be easy when mixing alcohol. with all inhibitions out the window, people are barely aware of what they're doing, if at all.. so many black outs. lots of nights are missing from my memory.. apparently things i did and was a part of, completely gone... i only know the stories -- there are a lot of ODs on benzos+alcohol

sorry for rambling. that's all i can think of atm

peace

Depends, often it's simply a case of becoming too wrecked & then your objectivity fails you & you keep on doing what you really oughtn't be doing - then wham bang you're in hospital - then you realise you aren't immortal/impervious to the negative effects of excess drug intake.

So for me it was pushing the limits due to pure arrogance

It's a wake up call

Whenever I overdosed on benzos (and I've done that so many times I'm now well-known at the city hospital) it was really just a cry for help, cos I was feeling so depressed. I knew benzos alone wouldn't kill me, and my tolerance was so high they never had a huge effect on me anyway. I remember last time I overdosed, I calmly walked up to the desk in the emergency department and told the nurse that I had taken 200mg's of diazepam and 20mg's of clonazepam. She looked at me with amazement.

I only OD'd once, snorted 40mg of oxycodone with little tolerance while high on a bunch of clonazpeam, after staying up for a few days on various stimulants... well, I wouldn't call it an overdose so much as a complete mental breakdown, but it was definitely not healthy physically and I'm sure it could have ended a lot worse than it did. The only reason I did it was because I was in a terrible mood, one of the lowest points in my entire life, and I pretty much didn't care at that point whether it would hurt me or not. Lesson learned.

I've overdosed once and it wasn't an intentional or sensible thing, I miss guessed how potent a shot would be and woke up six hours after my shot cold and passed out on the floor of the bathroom. The thing that really bothered me was I had weighed out and been shooting off of the same block of tar for a bit so it wasn't like there was an unknown thing in the shot it was just the same as the one before it. Perhaps there was something in it that made me push the line.

I do know that after overdosing I seriously re-evaluated my look out on the whole pushing the dose envelope though. You can always chase with a second shot but you can't come down from one too high.
