Crude from the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill could eventually slosh ashore on Miami Beach or North Carolina's barrier islands, if it connects with a powerful sea current, an oceanographer said on Tuesday.

Robert Weisberg, a physical oceanographer at the University of South Florida, told a conference call the so-called Loop Current that sweeps around the Gulf was poised to connect with the spreading oil slick.

Once "entrainment" occurs, he said, the oil would be pulled quickly south along Florida's Gulf coast and out into the Florida Straits, between the United States and Cuba.

"Exactly when the oil will enter the Loop Current at the surface is unknown but it appears to be imminent," Weisberg said, referring to the prevailing current in the Gulf.

"It could be days or it could be longer but it looks like it's going to happen, and it looks like it's going to happen now sooner than later," he said.

However, depending on local winds, Florida's southwest beaches and the Florida Keys, along with coral reefs and the fragile ecosystem of the Everglades, could be spared from the oil slick, Weisberg said.

That is because ocean circulation models show it heading out to sea, past the Dry Tortugas islands, before it is caught up in the Gulf Stream and makes its way up the U.S. East Coast, he said.

"Once it's at the entrance to the Florida Straits it's only another week or so before it could be in the vicinity of Miami or Palm Beach and one more week or so until it could be as far north as Cape Hatteras," Weisberg said.

Asked about the possibility of the oil entering the Loop Current, a spokesperson for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the agency had no immediate forecast of this.

"As far as the Florida Loop Current (goes), our predictions go to 72 hours out and right now the predictions are not (for) an effect on Florida at this moment," she said.

Weisberg said whether or not the oil got into shallow water on its possible ocean journey would be totally dependent on winds.

"Whether or not the oil makes landfall anywhere will depend on what the winds are doing at that particular point in time ... It's likely that there could be oil on the beaches in Miami but we really can't say for sure right now."

What does America plan to do if they can not stop this "Underground Oil Volcano"?

I am assuming the whole world will be pretty pissed....

I hope this is the final wake up call that Americans need to realize they need to stop using oil and convert to alternative energy.

If not, there are much worse things coming. Oil spills are very bad. Climate change is even worse than spills. Extreme shortages aren't fun either. It's predicted that those will begin to happen within the next 20 years or so. There's only so much oil in the ground, and we've burned most of it up, which is why we are digging under the ocean for it.

Maybe this is a sign that we need to stop using so much oil?

^Yeah, so we can be forced into a highly taxed "green" economy with no alternatives whatsoever, outside of Their System. As if we weren't being raped enough by rich fuckers.

Good plan!

Here's an idea: Quit letting the evil fucking corporations do evil fucking shit!!

I am all for green technology.... but i just don't want any crazy restrictions and shit... how much water i use... what kind of car i drive....I am pro all the green stuff... just anti being forcing it down my throat... i am scared the government will use the green movement as a ruse to control peoples lives and tax shit even more(carbon tax)...

Restrictions on cars and water might be inconvenient, but they will happen sooner or later. It doesn't matter if you don't like it. There are hard natural limits that we can't get around. There is only so much fresh water and oil on the earth, and people have no right to be wasteful. Americans think they do, but they are very deluded. Those things will end up being rationed no matter what. If the government doesn't do it, the earth will. No way around it... we simply can't continue to be so wasteful and greedy about the earth's resources.

I do not have the slightest idea of what you are talking about. Your post makes no sense at all. You already have no alternatives. Right now, you are forced to use oil and fossil fuels. A lot of people are forced to drive cars and burn natural gas because they have no choice but to do so.

Using different kinds of energy would mean MORE alternatives, not less.

^You just don't understand them, yet. You will, in due time. Oh, so CONNED.

And, so you know, I have ways of making electricity without the need for fuels or taxes. Anyone can spin a motor....

We already have all the alternative energies we need, its just that a big corporation can't make a profit off of them. This is what the coming global taxes are all about.

Ever hear of Desalination?

I suppose next you'll say "We only have so much salt."

Yeah, you're getting CONNED mars, cos you don't listen to everything Alex Jones says!

Capstone - You do realise desalination requires a shitload of energy, no? Then you have the other problem with what to do with all that toxic brine that usually gets pumped back into the ocean and kill the marine environment surrounding the desal plant, right?

But that's be socialism! You people are walking contradictions.

We don't want to use Middle East oil and we want to stop oil spills by evil corporations!

But we don't want an energy solution because that'd help the evil corporations!

We want green enrgy but we don't want evil corporations to provide

And we don't want to raise taxes to pay for anything because that's socialism and its evil!

You want everything, but you don't want to pay for it.

How would you go about stopping evil corporations from polluting the planet AND paying for it without raising taxes and printing more money to raise enough capital so that you can drive around in your old shitbox, armed to the teeth, and watch Alex Jones across you high speed internet connection?

sorta like an addiction. rock bottom! or magma bottom

Incompetence. There are clean ways to do this, as well for the energy matter, that's why you build them near hydroelectric generators. And you don't need a river to do this, either. Harness the power of an ocean current, and you have all the power you could ever need.

Then, there would be too much tho, the rich fucks wouldn't make any money.

But that's be socialism! You people are walking contradictions.

No, you just like to simplify and condescend the things you will never be capable of understanding.

For instance, actually enforcing regulations for these bigass corporations which lobby legislators to do the opposite would be a good start. Fail safe, anyone? Something which all machines are supposed to have...

Allow a free market, but you fucking damn well make sure that they aren't fucking everything up. Its easy. We have the fucking technology to do all this shit right, but the problem is the current set of multinationals like to cost cut wherever they can, which always results in disastrous consequences.

We pay for our products, but only to the point where we aren't getting gouged, or, for that matter, fucking poisoned. I have a philosophical issue with the fact that as things "progress," the industrial processes are only becoming more incompetent. They fuck the ocean simply because their greed forces them to try to squeeze another penny for the pound, while we all stand by and get fucked. Fuck this shit.

And if you think that going green with these exact same companies running the game is going to change anything, then I'll be seeing you on the other side of the looking glass.

Its getting to the point where we need to start voting for the fucks who run these companies, not just allowing royalty(BP) to run it.

Get out of your stupid controlled paradigm and actually think for yourself for once.

I saw a state officer today in south padre island, tx that was driving a truck towing a boat... On the side of the truck it said "Texas general disaster emergency response - oil spill division. The logo on the side was the same as the game wardens' from Texas parks and wildlife, but it was blue instead of green... I thought it was going torward Louisiana?? Just sharing my little experience...

BROWNSVILLE - Authorities are investigating an incident at a drilling rig. The drilling rig is located on Highway 4, about three miles west of Boca Chica Beach.

White smoke is visible from the base of a platform. Brownsville Fire Department responded to the scene.

Crews shut down traffic to and from Boca Chica Beach. There's no word if any evacuations were ordered.

Goldman Sachs Reveals it Shorted Gulf of Mexico
May 3rd, 2010

Huffington Post
by Andy Borowitz

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - In what is looming as another public relations predicament for Goldman Sachs, the banking giant admitted today that it made “a substantial financial bet against the Gulf of Mexico” one day before the sinking of an oil rig in that body of water.

The new revelations came to light after government investigators turned up new emails from Goldman employee Fabrice “Fabulous Fab” Tourre in which he bragged to a girlfriend that the firm was taking a “big short” position on the Gulf.

“One oil rig goes down and we’re going to be rolling in dough,” Mr. Tourre wrote in one email. “Suck it, fishies and birdies!”

The news about Goldman's bet against the Gulf comes on the heels of embarrassing revelations that the firm had taken a short position on Lindsay Lohan's acting career.

Does anyone know if this really happened? The last line makes me especially suspicious.

wtf is going on with the platforms in the gulf? grrr :X

You think the story is related to the "TX disaster emergency response - oil spill division" officer I saw earlier in the day around 1:30PM in South Padre Island -[about 15 miles north along the coast]??
