Tramadol, Oxy 7.5 and potentiators

Hey guys,

So yesterday I took two 7.5mg oxycodones for the first time. I take them for a legit reason, chronic pain, and I'm not trying to get the high effects but I'm trying to kill the pain (unbearable to the point I can't even lay down sometimes).

Tramadol is supposed to be a potentiator for oxy, correct? And if so, why doesn't it seem to be working?

Using the 1-10 scale, oxy generally takes me from an unbearable 8 or 9 to a slightly bearable 7, occasionally a 6.

After taking the two oxy yesterday, I was still in pain... Still at around a 7...

Tonight I tried two Tramadol, but no oxy (on my last pill; gotta get my refill filled-- might take a few days). Any suggestions on potentiators for both oxy/tramadol combination or for either one of them alone?

I don't have access to any other meds except butalbital and ambien, besides OTC in US. Also I don't smoke pot, though the pains getting to the point where I consider it an option.

I just want to be in a state where I can both function and not be in massive pain. I don't usually even get a high from oxy, that's how bad the pain is.

I appreciate your responses.

side note: I did search, but my unique situation prevents me from wanting to follow those other tips I've read. Some contradict one-another so I'd like some fresh opinions.

Thanks again!

Also, my Dr is very understanding of my situation. If there are any RX meds you can give me a valid reason to get to help me out, please let me know and I'll talk it over with my physician.

maybe try gabapentin or lyrica for pain if your looking for a non-narcotic solution to your pain, it can be a wonder drug for some people especially because of the low abuse and addiction potential.

Maybe you need stronger meds. Oxycontin is long lasting and the perc 7.5s could be used for breakthrough pain along with something like lyrica could work for you. Problem is you're on short acting medication... Maybe a change like that could make all the difference.. Also what is your diagnosis if you don't mind my asking. I am a chronic pain patient as well.

15mg of oxy isn't much. For my back pain I started at 30mg. Personally I found the only real help with oxy was the high. I would get high enough that I didn't care about the pain. Try 7.5 x 3 or 4. I bet it helps.

^^^^^^The abuse potential is there, trust me.
Long term use does include tapering, which means dependency.

Yea but with pain that bad tapering is worth it. I mean really why suffer if you don't have to? If he wants his quality of life improved he will have to take that into consideration.

It all leads to more suffering in the end. Stuff stops working.
Nothing will dull the pain forever, and as you should know, they will increase the dose till dependence due it's part. I would just advise enough to take the edge off, not to let your doc ramp up the doses, which is inevitable, but know that enough is enough when you visit him/her.

And it's not like he/she will be on one med at a time, we know he/she is gonna get a cocktail of dependence building drugs, more-so than now.

In any case, antihistamine drugs, such as benadryl (diphenhydramine), dramamine (dimenhydrinate, which is diphenhydramine), chlorpheniramine/chlorphenamine, and brompheniramine (dimetapp), will all help potentiate these opioids. Tramadol acts to a great extent through a different mechanism, involving serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibition, as do the antihistamines, which seems to be one of their mechanisms of analgesia. Of course, these drugs tend to cause moderate to severe drowsiness, but they are otherwise well-tolerated. Unfortunately, other antihistaminic drugs, such as meclizine, loratidine, and cetirizine don't have this effect as they don't cross the blood-brain barrier. Alcohol will also certainly potentiate opioid analgesia, but this should be used to a very small extent, if at all. The two drugs increase the effects of each other and can cause life-threatening respiratory depression together. I would try the tramadol a few more times, though MAKE SURE not to take too much tramadol at once as it poses a serious seizure risk when taken above 300mg. But it should work to potentiate the oxy. Maybe you should try a very small dose of chlorpheniramine should be tried out to see if it helps, if you can tolerate the drowsiness. What might also help would be a muscle relaxant such as cyclobenzaprine, though these types of drugs have some dependence and addiction potential, but it would help the pain in relieving muscle tension and it would potentiate the opioid. There are a lot of options available to you, you don't have to live in pain.

I'd say bypass on the tramadol, you have way better and safer things to help you at your disposal. Use it for in between refills. Butalbital will greatly add to the oxycodone's analgesic effects. I see your tolerance is pretty big, so this will help get more out of the oxycodone. Of course use the ambien for sleep. Don't dose it too high, or it will lose it's power fairly quickly.

Opiate enhancers

If you take the oxy with a Soma, or some other muscle relaxer, it will increase the effects dramatically, esp. with Soma. Taking with grapefruit juice, and a tagamet about an hour before any meds will also help, but don't take more than one soma, unless you wanna wind up in the ER for an OD, and it can cause that to happen, if you do not use the utmost caution with soma, which can be very dangerous, and please, DO NOT DRIVE, whether you enhance the drugs or not--I have seen too many people think they cannot get hurt or get a DUI on pain pills and Soma but you definitely CAN. 8o
