Does anyone have a good source about the difference in combustion of thc when smoking or when vaporising the plant material ?

In other words, how much more efficient is vaporising?

I don't understand. When you smoke it, you burn it, right. And all what is left are ashes, so how can that be any different?

Here are some important temperatures:

At 21°C (70°F) - the most volatile terpenoids start to evaporate, lending a pungent odor to the air.

At 31°C (87°F) - the less volatile terpenoids start to evaporate, lending the air even more pungent odors.

At 39°C (102°F ) - virtually all of the terpenoids undergo evaporation fairly rapidly.

At 50°C (122°F) - THC-Acid decarboxylates as the water molecule held in the carbonate form evaporates. This activates the THC.

At 66°C (150°F) - Cannabidiol (CBD) melts and starts to evaporate.

At 185°C (365°F) - Cannibinol (CBN) boils.

At 200°C (392°F) - THC boils. Clear vapor from a vaporizer.

This info + digital vape = solution. instead of destroying the thc, why dont you just never use it?

^ I don't know the source for this, but it looks pretty accurate....

i meant are you smoking it in a joint, pipe, or bong.

all will affect the rate and speed at which the plant material is burned.
along with how deep your pull/inhalations are

I understand what you are saying. I do not really care about those factors though. Of course a pipe, bong or joint will make a difference along with how deep you are inhaling etc but that wasn't really my question.

Let me put it differently. You have 2 test boxes with 0,3 g of weed in each one of them and some kind of collector filter gas chromatography machine -whatever- on top of it. In one box you burn down the weed sample. In the other you heat it up till the correct vaporising temperature.

In which one will the most THC pass through the filter ?

vape.

reason;

none of the THC will have been wasted by being burnt.
ALL of the THC will have been released, with no burned plant material byproducts or other unknown compounds.

at least some of the thc in the cannabis sample will simply be wasted due to the high temps of fire.

think about it, thc boils off just under 400F. a bic lighter flame is something like just over 3500F.
better believe a lot of the shit you want in your lungs gets incinerated before you can absorb it (with a lighter).

Any idea about how many we are wasting by burning? I imagine it can easily be around 40-50%...

Damn that reminds me, a vaporizer really is a good way to spend some money.

Yeah thats so true. Spending $200 on some simple heating element is quite alot of money ...

Then again I can't get rid of this feeling that is telling me that it'll be worth it :) ...

The investment pays for itself b/c you do use less weed when vaping v. smoking. I'd place a conservative estimate at 25-30%, but IME it's higher. The brown vaped weed can be used for baking as well.

The $125-150 USD models are fairly reliable and as the vape market has become more competitive, warranties have improved. Some of the headshop knock-offs suck though.

I found an interesting vape the other day, very small and about $100 USD for the starter kit. http://www.magic-flight.com/

The reviews on the site intrigued me, so I looked it up on other boards. Good reviews. It's also completely stealth. It's not a major kit or a Volcano*, but apparently it does the job well and the stealth feature is an added bonus. Downside is there's some learning curve involved in managing the batteries. I'd like to hear opinions from BLers, but I don't want to derail the thread. ;)

* While I admire the workmanship, I think the Volcano is overkill. Sure, it could probably re-enter the atmosphere better than the Space Shuttle, but why? And I don't like the bags. Meh. $600? It's well-crafted and reliable, but I don't like the indulgence factor. Many vape companies are run by engineers who take immense pride in the design and craft of their products, so why do I need to spend another $400? Just my opinion, some friends love it.

That looks amazing
