geeze... how hard would it be to do some reading & extract the codeine beforehand... maybe Science for Dummies needs to dedicate an entire issue to CWE... I certainly wouldn't want that much ibuprofen in my tummy :(

Nurofen & mersyndol do wonders for my headaches... it would be annoying to need a prescription in order to get hold of them! :X

I think you fail to realise that addiction and ignorance go hand in hand, not least because addiction is a denial forming habit designed specific to create a cognitive dissonances in the individual.

Furthermore it could be argued that a large portion of the vulnerable population, heavily traumatised & addicted don't exactly have internet access nor would have though of doing something like CWE. I'd say its unlikely these people have gainful employment or such

Take a relative of mine. No access to the internet, has been a heavy addict for twenty years. was shooting bupe (and anything else) and such without any realisation to harm they were doing. They would have eaten ibuprofen plus tablets without even bothering to split them (when they were split-able).

compared to their peers however they would have been considered respectable non-drug users and yet the thought of CWE on tablets wouldn't have struck them for a million years.

nor would they have any realisation of the damage so much NSAID would be doing to their stomach and liver.

Sometimes bluelighters forget that there is a world who has never used the internet and, who are just far to gone in the social economic addiction cycle to ever be reached with the current methods that either bluelight, government and other stakeholders employ

^^^ true chugs....we forget about the few who are less tech savvy and will never get to see the effort that the BL community put in. We should consider ourselves lucky i guess.

Codeine is the only thing for me that can provide relief from migraines (and hangovers!). I would be seriously annoyed if I had to get a prescription for these.

Same with me Doofus.
I read something also about they wanted to make it so you have to get a counseling session with the pharmacist to buy panadeine. I highly doubt it's gonna come in, but for them to even think that's a good idea is completely fucked up.

That article is insane. First of all they should consider removing the ibuprofen from the product or atleast replace it with some other less harmful active.

Does anyone know when this prescription only thing will happen? It would be so silly to go to the docs every time just because u have a little pain. Ban codeine and i will def turn to Heroin/oxy as a pain reliever. Rainy days ahead. Mite have to go on a shoppin spree LOL

This is ridiculous, I am going to have to stock up hardcore if this passes. The article only mentions ibuprofen products though, does this mean panadeine will still be available without a script? I really think there would be outcry if they made these prescription only because so many people use them for legit pain relief.

Welcome to the ranks of the US with this one guys, where codeine is always script...

I was told that atm, the only change is that 'any' codeine products will be kept behind the counter, meaning you have to ask for them instead of getting them off the shelf, and that the large boxes (I'm not sure if that refers to 48, or just the 96) will be discontinued. So it's still available, on request, for the time being. Just prepare to be drilled like fuck every time you request it.

i've heard this before. Is it all formulas that contain codeine? Is it all states? I would search myself but i'm on my phone.

Yeh mate..all products containing codeine. So no way to get your fix without going to a doctor. So stupid i think..what a waste of time!

Im going to stock up. 3 pharmacies in a row near me. 2 from each per day = 6x7 = 42 boxes

42 boxes will cost me $XXX

And i imagine that would last me quite a while if i just spent 1 week stocking up next week. I think ill do that...will definatly be worth it in the long run!!!

I was talking to a local pharmacist (QLD) the other day about this.

Currently in Queensland you can buy 24/48/72/96 or close to those of codeine containing products. Anything higher than a pack of 24 will require a label to be put on it. All they need for this is your name and address and they don't check your ID or anything.

With the new rules packs of 24 will require one of these labels. Packs higher than 24 will be prescription only.

This is for all codeine containing products whether it be generic paractemol and codeine or Nurofen Plus.

Short answer in bold. :D
In the United States, codeine is regulated by the Controlled Substances Act. It is a Schedule II controlled substance for pain-relief products containing codeine alone or more than 90 mg per dosage unit. In combination with aspirin or acetaminophen (paracetamol/Tylenol), it is listed as Schedule III or V, depending on formula. Preparations for cough or diarrhea containing small amounts of codeine in combination with two or more other active ingredients are Schedule V in the US, and in some states may be dispensed in amounts up to 4 fl. oz. per 48 hours without a prescription. Schedule V specifically consigns the product to state and local regulation beyond certain required record-keeping requirements (a dispensary log must be maintained for two years in a ledger from which pages cannot easily be removed and/or are pre-numbered, and the pharmacist must ask for a picture ID such as a driving licence) and also maintain controlled substances in the closed system at the root of the régime intended by the Controlled Substances Act of 1970; the codeine in these products was a Schedule II substance when the company making the Schedule V product acquired it for mixing up the end-product. In locales where dilute codeine preparations are non-prescription, anywhere from very few to perhaps a moderate percentage of pharmacists will sell these preparations without a prescription. However, many states have their own laws that do require a prescription for Schedule V drugs. The December 2008 issue of The Bulletin of the National Codeine OTC Lobby (Vol. XVIII, No. 4) listed 12 states with some kind of OTC access to codeine, noting that small independent pharmacies are the most likely to have it. This situation is roughly equivalent to that in February 1991, when the aforementioned organisation undertook its first comprehensive study of Schedule V and overall codeine, dihydrocodeine, ethylmorphine, and hydrocodone availability.

Other drugs that are present in Schedule V narcotic preparations like the codeine syrups are ethylmorphine and dihydrocodeine. Paregoric and hydrocodone were transferred to Schedule III from Schedule V even if the preparation contains two or more other active ingredients, and diphenoxylate is usually covered by state prescription laws even though this relative of pethidine is a Schedule V substance when adulterated with atropine to prevent abuse.

Codeine is also available outside the United States as an over-the-counter drug in liquid cough-relief formulations. Around the world, codeine is, contingent on its concentration, a Schedule II and IV drug under the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.[20]

They don't get suss with you going in twice a day? Especially every day for a week? I'm sure someone would pick up on it.

From a recreational standpoint, it's not really cause for alarm. You can still buy the 24 boxes, 2 or 3 of those are the max dose, and with the enzyme inhibition issue you can't really sustain use for more than a few weeks anyway, so no point in using heavily.

bahaha..nah i only use it like 3 times a week or so! But that would be at least a years supply..maybe more..

and i only go in ONCE A DAY! I can grab up to 3 at a time and they don't ask questions at all. My girlfriend went and got 5 one time. They didnt bat an i lid. The only question she got asked was if she wanted a paper bag with it! haha..

So yeh..basically its all sweet. They are great! Service with a smile..

But it'd suck if they made everything prescrip. Because that would mean sOOOOOOOOOO much hassle just for a cheap high!

Spent thursday and friday of this week munting out on the deine twice a day. It was great..and old mate was in town.

But this isn't actually going to pass is it?
I don't think pharmacies would accept it. It's probably half their profits going down the drain.

Still, yeah can always just hit up multiple pharmacies.

I remember one time I had my wisdom teeth out and I got a 24 pack on Friday, went back in on Monday to get another, I still had 4 pills left and just making sure I didn't run out. The idiots wouldn't give it to me coz the same girl was there as the last time and she recognised me.
I said ok that's cool, drove 5 minutes to another pharmacy and got some there.
lol, just as long as they don't bring in the I.D check like with ephedrine products it's all good.

It is actually ibuprofen that this article is worried about. I hear nothing about the bad effects of codeine.

Sure it is addictive if taken regularly, but no health effects are mentioned in this article.

Go figure.

Thanks for the info jesuslol. I didn't realise anything over 24 would be prescription only!?

Anyway I just found some further confirmation of the changes (sorry if this has already been linked): http://www.guild.org.au/content.asp?id=2696
