[Book] DMT the Spirit Molecule

I actually really dislike the book, in retrospect. It great that Strassman was able to open up psychedelic research again, but with the conclusions and ridiculous hypotheses he came up with, we'd be better without it.

The whole pineal gland thing is silly; he has no evidence (now or then) that DMT is a subsstance from the pineal, or that it even has a purpose in humans.

great observation and i tend to agree.

Never thought I'd meet such skeptics on this forum...

His subjects' reports of entity contact are very much inline with what my friends and I have experienced on DMT. I also find it really interesting that so many people report seeing these same alien / fairy / clown entities and that the narrative is almost identical from trip to trip, with a heavy emphasis on the teaching / learning.

I'm thinking these are really just dormant archetypal characters which God is using to "get through to us" or...in his own funny way...tailor each trip to maximize the knowledge and benefit imparted to humanity.

But hey, maybe I am just a lunatic? Who knows...

The only reason I am skeptikal, is because the trips were obviously coloured by his and his helpers prescence. He never mentioned that though.

Why would God use an archetype? An archetype is a "condensing" of certain ideas inherent in all conciousness....if God is God (you refer to it as he) then surely, He would override archetypal thought and simply lay the smack-down.

I'm not sceptikal at all about what DMT does; just VERY scetpical about Strassman's book...

nonnihilnitoris:

So, if God is using these characters to "get through to us", what about the majority of the rest of the people in the world that don't use DMT? Are they just left out, and don't see what God's trying to get through to us?

All I'm saying is it's a lot of speculation presented almost as fact.

It could all be 100% true, he just needs more proof before making such bold statements.

so there are no studies which actually show that DMT occurs in the pineal gland, or is active in sleep?

I read it and enjoyed it, but I didn't really know much about psychedelics at that point. just reading about DMT was cool enough.

I have posted about this before but IMO Strassman's speculation is presented very clearly as speculation and not as fact. Personally I thought he did a good job of making it clear that these were unproven theories, and I found it interesting to see the reasoning behind the theories even if they were pretty far-fetched sometimes. Maybe there are certain things he should have factored in more (IE lab setting, although I also remember him specifically talking about how that was very unideal) but everyone is entitled to interpret things their own way, and I think in the writing of the book Strassman was very good about making it clear that this was his interpretation and nothing more. While a lot of people have taken this interpretation and presented it as fact, I dont think Strassman did.

This is why I frequent bluelight, because there are skeptics and actual intellectuals as opposed to just the run-of the-mill, burnt-out, "peace, conspiracy theories and hyperspace" heads who will bite any psychedelic, far-out, esoteric bait, hook, line and sinker. (I think I got all those commas in order haha)

Hey!, I resemble that remark! %) :D

The Spirit Molecule: I like the book. I usually never take anything as total truth but I love the large thoughts. That's why I like Terrence McKenna too. It's balsy stuff in humdrum world even if some of it is far out. To me it's more interesting than the Wall Street Journal.

I remember a book I had a long time ago called The Beyond Within. It was entertaining reading Sydney Cohen and Richard Alpert (pre Ram Dass) go back and forth between science and mysticism. Lots of arguing.
Correction, the book I'm thinking about was just called LSD. But both were good.

^ I don't know if you should be using the Wall Street Journal as your benchmark for "interesting" ;)

You can phone Rick for about $100 bucks.

What? Did you make this up or are you serious?

I found the book very interesting mostly because of the really intense trip reports in it but I found it a bit to speculative and self-indulgent for my tastes. That doesn't really bother me though, what does annoy me a little is how many people take his theories and regurgitate them as complete fact.

haha we need just a little bit of everybody to get by

I do sympathize with Delta 9's sentiment though. I get sick of hearing the completely unsubstantiated DMT/Death/Pineal gland theory regurgitated as fact all the time.

^^ Exactly.. IMO Strassman was pretty clear about the fact that they're unproven theories, the problem is spunion DMT heads spreading them around as the gospel

Oh I saw that book at barnes and noble and started reading it.
It's so interesting and just awesome

One thing I read that I've also read in people's experiences and on other psychedelics is when they get to this point where you are in a timelessness, pure euphoria, extremely content.... dimension.

I couldn't help but think, Is this like your soul leaving your body, and possibly this is what heaven will be like. I can only imagine

It is not proven that DMT is produced by the pineal gland. But it IS proven that DMT SOMEHOW occurs naturally in the human body. Don't forget that.

And despite that the theory is not scientifically proven, it does make sense. (Melatonin, a close relative of DMT, is secreted by the pineal gland.)

my favorite theory was that DMT fills the cell receports that normally want seretonin when we die and it could cause the gateway of our minds going into heaven

Cool, thanks Shambles. I remember my copy of the book. It was a hard cover from the school library complete with the card catelog jacket.(The Dewey Decimal system ;) ) Back in the late 70's we were allowed to read stuff like that in school. Nowadays the public thought is we can't have our kids reading that stuff. The next thing you know is children are allergic to peanuts.....

I agree with most of the thought here on the Spirit Molecule book. It is interesting but there are those that take great theories as truth and try and build on it. That ruins it.
