Wow, this feels weird actually posting a thread on BDD rather than modding/overseeing what's being posted. So you def. know I checked the search engine AND google before coming here.

Over the last year I gained a bit of a beer gut; though still a slim guy, I don't like it one bit. I've now banned myself from beer. My roommate also tells me to ban myself from hard liquor since it won't help with losing weight either (thanks to calorie intake still being present).

I was wondering if anyone knew about benzo's and if they hindered weight loss at all. Their sedative and hypnotic nature lends me to believe that it might be possible for them to slow down natural activity and therefore be bad for trying to lose a few pounds. I am very active otherwise, go to the gym and do yoga, and keep in shape during the day.

So the question is mostly for "night time" recreational benzo use. Will it hurt my metabolism at all and slow down the weight loss I'm trying to make work?
Or do benzo's not create those kind of physiological processes that would alter losing weight in any way?

thanks.

Do lotsa coke and meth when you wake up to compensate %). How often are you dosing the benzos?

Maybe twice a week or so, and I dont binge. Just something to keep the edge off and relax during the night. It's a lot better than downing a 12 pack a night (aka 2009).

Alprazolam, Diazepam, and Clonezepam are all contenders, but im 99% sure it doesn't matter "which" im taking in regards to the topic question :)

Yes, any downer is slowing down your metabolism. (GABA/Opiate)

No, alcohol was not your problem. (Beer bellies are not really beer bellies.)
There is no fat in alcoholic beverages.
You just eat a shitload of unhealthy shit when you are drunk, and alcohol/benzos slow your metabolism, leading to a shitload of calories building up.

3500 calories= 1 pound of body fat.
Now think, the average person going to McDonald's is going to ingest 1 1/2 times that amount in one sitting.

So, hop on the treadmill and get at it.

Seriously, I wouldn't recommend it. Losing a bit of weight isn't worth a benzo addiction.

That is completely wrong. Almost all beer contains sugar which essentially is turned into fat and will cause you to gain weight.

Just because there isn't any 'fat' in alcoholic beverages doesn't mean they don't make you gain weight. Beer in particular will make you gain weight quickly - beer bellies are real, it has nothing to do with what you eat while you're drunk 8)

I dont know about slowing down metabolism but it is a pretty common side effecft of benzo withdrawl to cause stomach bloating and similar prolems. Im not sure of the mechanism but theres plenty of others with the same problem that blame their benzo use on forums like benzo.org.uk

How often do you take benzos?

Psychedelic Jay couldnt be more wrong either all alcohol is just empty calories that can cause you to gain weight easily.

I gained a fee lbs that have been hard to get off when I started my benzo treatment a few years ago. I have heard mixed reviews about them causing people to lose weight as well... I would suggest cardio it has worked for me. Good luck I know this issue Is a pain in the ass.

Oh and for the record alcohol contains sugar and empty calories which in turn causes weight gain.

Benzos always made food taste soooooo good to me, I would eat anything in sight. When you take benzos, do drinks feel different? They feel more cold and fluid for some reason, and that feeling can persist for a few days after taking benzos. Any idea why that happens?

Exactly meaning that nothing anyone says is right.

It even says moderate consumption is linked to weight loss.

Calories from alcohol are enhanced by fatty food intake.
It is hard to gain any kind of weight if your diet is proper.
Sedimentary lifestyles my also contribute to the weight gain caused by beer.

All the people I have seen in this world with a "beer- belly" are lazy shits.
I know tons of Irish people who have a bad alcohol habit, and workout in some form everyday, and not gain any weight.

I never said it doesn't make you gain weight, but most people just give it the full opportunity to put on pounds.
Most alcoholics I knew that are in fact dead right now, actually were fat blobs, not because of their habit, but the fact that they had just let themselves go.

Yes, but in terms of this:

Alcohol would have been a contributing factor. Frequently drinking large quantities certainly contributes to weight gain.

We can't make this assumption until the OP himself admits that he drinks large quantities of alcohol. Beer or wine to be more specific. Hard liquor is distilled, so this has even a lower incidence of causing weight gain, right? Being that there is little if not no sugar in them, meaning even less calories.

I guess some people just become too chilled or messed up to really get a proper amount of exercise during the day from GABA-A drugs.

O.K., I get this picture.

But let's be specific to the O.P. and his consumption.
I am in no way trying to make general statements.
These studies were only meant as a backdrop of a few points that I wanted to make out.

Past that, go deeper.

What is his strenuous activity level?
Yoga is not going to cut it at all.
He states going to the gym. But everyone knows one can burn himself out very fast unintentionally. Leading to an inappropriate amount of exercise to even think about weight loss.
