Mental Health Abilify for depression?

Not if you like felling well. I got very disphoric while taking this med. But, it's just me, I tend to get agitated on anti-psychotics.

I do not use abilify myself but my girlfriend does and seeing as she's sitting next to me I can give you what she has to say about it. :)

My girlfriend said:
I've been diagnosed with bi-polar disorder with psychotic episodes, OCD, chronic severe depression, generalized anxiety disorder, etc.
Depakote, Zoloft, and Klonopin were helping but I was still experiencing violent mood swings, sometimes hour to hour.
With the addition of 10mg of Abilify daily, my moods stabilized dramatically and I have been fairly stable ever since.
I don't know if it cures depression, but as that was something I was really struggling with, the Abilify seemed to help a great deal.
In fact I'm about to discontinue the Depakote having tapered from 1000mg down to 125mg over the course of a year, decreasing in increments of 125mg every 2 months.
So it might be worth a shot, good luck.

That would be her input on the matter, hope it helps.

Side effects:

Akathisia, headache, unusual tiredness or weakness, nausea, vomiting, an uncomfortable feeling in the stomach, constipation, light-headedness, insomnia, sleepiness, shaking, and blurred vision.

Uncontrollable twitching or jerking movements, tremors, seizure, and weight gain. Some people may feel dizzy, especially when getting up from a lying or sitting position, or may experience a fast heart rate.

Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (Combination of fever, muscle stiffness, faster breathing, sweating, reduced consciousness, and sudden change in blood pressure and heart rate.)

Tardive dyskinesia (As with all antipsychotic medication, patients using aripiprazole may develop the permanent neurological disorder tardive dyskinesia.[28][29][30])

Stroke (While taking aripiprazole some elderly patients with dementia have suffered from stroke or 'mini' stroke.)

Other elderly patients may experience high blood sugar or the onset or worsening of diabetes.

Allergic reaction (such as swelling in the mouth or throat, itching, rash), increased production of saliva, speech disorder, nervousness, agitation, fainting, reports of abnormal liver test values, inflammation of the pancreas, muscle pain, weakness, stiffness, or cramps.

Sudden death.

I suspect there are better alternatives for some <3

Never used Abilify but the people that like it absolutely love it's anti-depressant qualities..Just try it for a month and see how you feel...

On a side note, I've been taking 2,400mgs of Gabapentin daily for 10 months and I feel amazing.

I'm on 5mg (a relatively low dose) prescribed for dysthymia and for me it works like a bomb. The first 2 or so months were extremely rough as the Abilify made me extremely agitated and restless but those symptoms eventually disappeared. The difference in my moods between when I am on it and off it is the difference between night and day.

I know right, I would just deal with going batshit for the first month taking this.
I hate when you get that RLS feeling on this.
I just had to move but I was sedated to the point of not wanting to, and it pissed me off soooo bad.

Akathisia is THE WORST.

I get it on so many antipsychotics and it makes me what to kill myself.

Abilify never gave it to me, but Thorazine, Haldol, and Seroquel all did.

Almost everything that can block dopamine gives it to me.
When I took coprazine for nausea, I went batshit.

I even get a RLS from taking benadryl, which is supposed to help this.

Initialy I just had to stop treatment all together.

I tried Abilify one week ago, prescribed by my psychiatrist who told me it was a miracle drug (yeah, sure), and 2 hours after taking one pill (10mg) I began to be nauseous, then really nauseous, and then I puked and puked and puked for two solid days. Bye bye Abilify.

^^ i take my abilify in the morning, because it is slightly stimulating IME... and i have an oldschool neuroleptic (cyamemazine, not sure if its available in the US but it works pretty well, just a bit groggy in the morning) which i take at night... along with valium, xanax and meprobamate....

as for the side-effects, i havn't experienced any bad ones YET...

Glad to hear your doing well on the side effects. Other than the stimulation does it seem effective for you for depression etc?

I'm not judging anyone who chooses to take this medication, but IMO Abilify is toxic and ineffective crap along with most of the other poison your psychiatrist is gunna want to shove down your throat.
