It's in my humble opinion that she is the best female vocalist that has ever lived. I'm not basing this strictly on her sales but she has the most #1 singles for any female artist, her albums Daydream and Music Box both went 10 times platinum. As of recently she has taken a dip in her talent but that's expected after more than 10 albums going strong.

Honestly though her music has taken me through many difficult times. After a breakup I used to through on some Mariah and listen to it light and it was rather catharthic. I would definitely say the best starting point for anyone would be "Emancipation of Mimi" my favorites from there are "We Belong Together", "Shake it Off" and "One and Only" ft Twista.

No one comes even near touching her vocals whatsoever. Her falsetto is off the charts, and she's just as good live! Other noteworthy tracks are "Music Box" and "Fantasy".

Discuss.

To the OP. Go watch Glitter. It was a life transforming experience.

^Yes, I realize it was sarcastic. When she was talking on Larry King Live she talked about how people still bring up Glitter. I think I will view her role in the movie Precious when it comes to DVD, and did I mention she has an absolutely amazing body for a 40 something?

She's seriously horrific in every sense. :|

Why she feels the need to open every song with that little, "wooo oooohhh ooooohh", every damn time is beyond me. Vocal gymnastics is boring, y'all. =D

^^^ LMAO - that is EXACTLY what I was going to post... the "wooo oooooh oooooh" bit =D

That is one of my pet hates in music... and the little arm action to go with it as they go up and down the scales of notes...

Whenever she does it it's in tune though, I love her falsetto during the breakdowns in a song. LOL at the arm going up and down. That's all textbook female ballad singing.

A more flattering photo

I don't have a razor-sharp brain right now, so I can only come up with the obvious responses:
Ella Fitzgerald
Mahalia Jackson (!!!!)
Billie Holliday
Sarah Vaughn
Betty Fucking Carter (check Red Top w/King Pleasure and her absolutely insane jazz break-down on a straight verse! And she was 18 when she recorded it. Unfuckingbelievable. If you listen to it, you'll hear what I mean.)
and, in caps because you first referenced a soul (R&B) singer…
ARETHA FRANKLIN (aside from the dozens of major hits, here are some other essentials: You Send Me, This is the House That Jack Built, Young, Gifted and Black, Spirit in the Dark, and Takin' Another Mans' Space (If you skip the others, you gotta at least check that last one).

Aretha's version of Eleanor Rigby is monumental. The woman was married off at 13 or something but she never visited the Oprah confessional; she put her pain and power into her performances. Don't get distracted by the TMZ-style bullshit about her weight or whatever. The woman can still sing like a motherfucker. But check her earlier stuff: 1962-late-70s or so.

No disrespect to Mariah actually. I've heard her sing. She's a good singer. And I don't know shit about her private life, so I that doesn't impact my response. But really, yo. Really. Check out the true masters then listen to Mariah.

RTTT, you seem to be down with down with R&B and you seem to respect it, but check the people who made the classic recordings that inspired the later artists. If you just want to stick to R&B and avoid jazz, at least listen to Aretha flat-out kill her fucking songs.

And don't live your life without listening to Mahalia Jackson. Start with "In the Upper Room." Most of the R&B singers, even contemporary ones, started out with at least some gospel experience and training and it shines through their performances.

If you love Mariah Carey, I think you'll be feeling her influences. The shit is raw and for real. It will move you.

If you are speaking just about technical ability (not counting more intangibles like "soul" or "feeling") and just pop music (surely there are several opera singers who might be "better"), you might have an arguement.

Her range is impressive.

Part of what I love about Mariah is the beats and the hip-hop cameos she has. The older stuff is much more sedated, it will only make the most vague sexual innuendos and it's focused almsot entirely on vocals or instruments rather than a beat.

EA=1475=I'm talking technical ability and soul. Her music has brought me through shit no one elses has. Listen to the song "Fly Like a Bird", it sounds almost like gospel at some level. I was going through a time where I didn't know what to do with myself, laying in bed with my head burried in a pillow drowning in tears. Not wanting to eat, speak to anyone, do anything and I put the song on and hear a beautiful voice sending me such an optimistic message, got myself together and realized I had to pick up the pieces.

150,000,000 albums sold worldwide, theres some significant talent behind those numbers as well but more importantly is how she makes me feel.

She has rockin' tits, I have nothing positive to say about her music though.

I think she is a decent enough modern R&B singer.

her tracks with Bone Thugs and Harmony were the best.

she's effing crazy though, you can just sorta tell. I've used the "my car breaks down more times than Mariah Carey" line so many times, all to laughs.
