removing methyl violet from methanol using hydrogen peroxide

i am interested in using methanol as part a chemical extraction, but i have one issue. the methanoll i can aquire in small amounts has methyl violet present and i am unsure of how to remove it as if it was left in the residue i dont fancy growing five new arms and a second anoos.;)

any ideas?

This is the best way for sure. The boiling point of methanol is 65 C/150 F and it can be easily distilled (even in small quantities using an industrial heat gun from a hardware store). Careful if you try this because it is also quite flammable. I wouldn't attempt this unless you have some experience distilling flammables, or know someone who does that will help you.

Activated carbon might work Ok, since methyl violet is a big polyaromatic molecule and could stick to it, but I would be worried about getting all the dye out. Also, you would have to filter out the activated carbon either using a vacuum apparatus, or use gravity and more methanol, or maybe a pipette with a filter to suck up the methanol.
 
Ventillation would be a problem with activated-carbon decolorization too, as you'd need to boil the methanol.
 
thanks so far guys but i lack a lot of chemistry equipment that would protect me from the vapours and likely death in a house fire.

i was looking for something that would avoid an increase in temperature yet be relatively accessable to the average drug feind
 
Running it through a column of packed cat litter or fullers earth or similar will do the job, the dye will be retained and the methanol goes through do not use silica methanol dissolves silica. This is similar to the technique used illegally in some places to remove dye from fuel
Easy to do and easy check if it has worked.

Methanol is not usually ideal as a solvent except in a very few cases ethanol or isopropanol work better and are safer.
